no i'm just getting paranoid that there's something wrong with the level that i haven't thought about. in particular the roof since i removed it to reduce the black dots problem and put it back on again after having rendered light maps. they should thus not have any lightmap

It's quite possible the roof doesn't have any lightmaps indeed -- you can be seeing just effect of ambient light on it. You can verify presence of lightmaps pretty easily, if they're missing then you get a warning either loading the level or when you try to enable "show lightmaps" switch in the level editor.
