Hey guys I was wondering if I should get a no-dvd crack for DAO.. Was wondering if that'll affect anything. The main reason I wanna use this is because I don't want to spoil the disc so quickly as I'll be replaying this a lot for.. I dunno.. Years to come? So anyways my main question is will the no-dvd crack spoil the game in anyway possible? Sometimes, I wonder if the digital or physical version would be better...:(

you cant apply patches to update the game in the future if you have it no cd'd/dvd'd.

I dont understand that concern. My original BG game discs consisting of 5 discs still work perfectly fine after over a decade of playing that game - insane. Just look after the disc and it will be fine. I dont think developers and distributers approve of no-cd / dvd cracks.

Some people use discs as dinner plates.

If you dont have the game yet, get the digital version if you are worried about the disk. Then you don' thave a disk to break. Though the only time the disk even spins on a pc is gonna be at start up just to authenticate the game. After that its all coming from your hard drive. But really you should know this if you are a pc gamer. Perhaps you should take a junior pc course? Not meaning that to be mean, but the better educated you are on your equipment the better off you are.

No offense, but youre not gonna learn that in a PC course :-)

Oh well wouldnt know I never took a pc course...I just learned everything by buying a pc 12 years ago and then wanting to upgrade it. So learned piece by piece until I was proficient enough to build my own. You would think they would mention something like that in a pc course...oh well. Perhaps it was just simple observation over the years of hearing my drive spin as a game started up...

A good portion of games nowadays don't require discplay at all. W00t!

I don't know where you generally get things like that but I usually check piratebay.org when I need something questionable.

Thanks for all your replies! I already have the collector's edition for the pc, and completed the Human Noble origin but I didn't do many quests so I finished it within 50 hours.. But I guess I might not use the no-dvd fix if it hinders future updates and stuff..

Wow so its possible to keep your game discs in good condition for over a decade of gaming? Any tips you could share?

use the CD jewel cases, and a non-scratch cleaning cloth (like you get with high-end sunglasses or LCD monitors)

and above all do not use them for a coaster for your beer

I actually will spry a bit of eye glass lens cleaner and use a cloth to clean them

not a scratch on my bg disks either :)

EA gives you a digital version that you can use.  It's a legal way to play without the DVD in the drive, but you'll have to download the game.

Download the EADM:

http://eastore.ea.com/eadm

Install
it and then run it. Click the login tab and then  log in to your
EA account. Should be the same account you use to login here.  Next
click the activation tab. Activate your copy using the Key on the back of your manual.

Goto the download tab and download.  If you didn't uninstall your dvd version it will just think its installed and still look for a dvd. You have to uninstall the dvd version and then it will download the digital version that doesnt require a dvd in the drive to play.

Put you DVD back in your collectors case and enjoy

Oh wow thats so cool! Thanks a lot! Well I guess I don't mind spending a lot of time downloading it digitally.. Since it'll keep my disc in good condition! Thanks again, as well as all the people who have taken their time to post suggestions!

I don't even use the jewel cases for games any more.. I just went to an office supply store and got a box that holds cd's and a bunch of cd/dvd envelopes (most games come in those envelopes now anyway.) and I store everything in there.. ever since I had a tight jewel case that cracked the inner ring of a dvd when I tried to remove it I store everything in there.. Just treat your cd/dvd's the same as you would a valuable old record and you should never have to worry about scratching.

You can also use Alcohol 120% to make yourself a *personal* backup copy. EADM is still the best option for you right now though.

Never figured out why some people kill discs so easily. I have Music CD's I bought in the late 80s that I still play, and game discs going all the way back to Might and Magic 6.

Just keep them in the case when not in use, and always hold them by the edges only, never place your finger on the disc surface.

I've got a disc over here that is over 15 years old. It's from 1993 and is one of the very first CD-ROM games:

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, CD-ROM Edition.

Yeah, the game originally came on... what, 15 floppies? The CD-ROM version produced a year later has voice-overs and sound effects, while the floppy version is mute apart from midi-music. I still play this game in DOSBox on an old computer once a year for nostalgic reasons... and the disc is fine.

What did I do? Nothing special. Just don't drop it, don't play frisbee with it, don't give it to the dog, that sort of stuff. All my other game discs are fine too, by the way :) I've NEVER had any original CD/DVD crap out on me in over 15 years time. By the way, I even have ALL the manuals of ALL of my games. And the boxes too.

Just be careful with your stuff.

edit: Hey, thanks for that EADM stuff. While I very much prefer a disc version so I have an actual game disc in my hands when installing, I'll still download this. I must confess, I DO use no-CD cracks where possible, because I really hate having to put the CD into the drive. I'll do it if there's no other way (say, no CD-crack for current version, or only unreliable ones), but I won't if I can avoid t. Thanks, going to download right now :)

Only if I may ask... isn't this a very easy way to just download a game and give it away to others? :X They could play the game, only not log into your profile... or you could share a profile. Not intending to do this, but I'd guess it's a distinct possibility.

Thanks for the shop link, the disc didn't work for me at all and this was a life-saver.
