If he wasn't trying to purposefully be nasty, then he's REALLY oblivious.
I think the only oblivious people are the Tali fans who think Jacob was trying to be anything other than helpful.

Anybody in engineering would have to interact with EDI... it's unavoidable. Jacob would have probably said the same thing to anybody who was coming aboard to fill a technical role on the ship. Had it been anybody but a quarian, it would have been helpful advice. But in this case, it was a gesture that to Tali would seem like a taunt, while Jacob probably saw it as one more olive branch of his wasted. Both of them would be left thinking "What the hell is their problem?"
It happens all the time in real life. Its good old fashioned, honest, regrettable cultural insensitivity. I imagine as soon as Tali left, Shepard made Jacob look up "geth uprising/Morning War" in the codex... and if given the opportunity, Jacob would apologize.

No, helpful and quite the opposite of oblivious. He knows about the quarian situation regarding A.I.'s and so rather than have Tali discover EDI on her own without any warning he gives her a heads-up. Helpful, not negligent.

He does work for Cerberus after all, and not just to help Shepard. He joined a human supremacist terrorist organization all on his own, you cant not be a little stupid and do that.

So do you shoot a combat drone or do you unplug it while it's recharging?

While I don't see it in Jacob's nature to just be blatently offensive, I think it's more of a "in the moment" thing. He probably forgot who he was talking to, mispoke, and then he paid the price. They pave it over eventually, but it wasn't the best way to start socializing with Tali.SweetPuff wrote...

He sounds a bit like a closet racist in that context.
If thats the case, then the AI comment could have been to offend.

Well, I've always thought that Jacob wasn't the quickest gun in the armory, and I can see a character like Miranda rubbing off on him, but for the most part he doesn't seem to be a xenophobe like many of the organization's members. Perhaps he used the comment of an AI to get back at Tali for what Prazza said, and I'd much rather Shepard be given the chance to talk with Tali about it.TheodoricFriede wrote...

I think Jacob was offended by the way Tali ignored his attempts to be nice and this was his way of reacting. He obviously just wanted Tali to give him the benefit of the doubt and he made it plain he understood her feelings yet Tali still ignored him in favor of labeling him a vile person for being connected to the horrible things Cerberus has done.
In my opinion, they are both wrong. Tali should have known better than to stereotype Jacob with the classic Cerberus image, i mean, Shepard proved the stereotype that everyone hates quarians wrong didn't he?
And Jacob shouldn't have let his anger make him say something a blatantly insensitive as what he did. I mean, a race of AIs killed billions of Tali's people, pretty messed up to make a jab like that.
Also, the reason I know Jacob's intentions were to scald is the way he says what he says. If he said it in anything except fake politeness, I would have let it pass. His tone of voice makes his intent obvious, or so I thought.

You're right, neither of them are innocent (though I think Jacob won the "Who can be more offending" contest) While I can understand how Jacob tried to be nice at first, he kinda went overboard with his comment. Most quarians naturally has a problem with Cerberus due to the attack they launched on one of their ships, And Jacob basically burns a bridge by the end of that cutscene. He didn't try to soften the impact, or explain it first, or rather anything really. He did that sorta half-assed "Oh by the way, there's an AI on this ship, you should go say hi". I know Jacob felt hurt but he just fanned the flames.GuardianAngel470 wrote...

That's pretty much my take on it. Much as I dislike Jacob, I'd rather not think that he's an idiot. As has been said, everyone knows the quarians created the geth, and would have an issue with AI. I understand where Tali is coming from. I wouldn't expect her to trust Cerberus just because Shepard does, but she has a tendency to be categorical in her judgments. So yes, she overreacted, and it was uncalled for, but Jacob didn't let it pass either. Had he been straight up about taking offense to Tali's words, I wouldn't have minded as much. But the AI jab is what I qualify as "low". There was no need to say it like that.
Also, he probably does have a racist streak somewhere: dumping him for Garrus or Thane results in an uncalled-for personal comment on them. He calls Garrus a "cuttlebone", and says something about "women falling for those big drell eyes". Again, I know he's upset, but there were many other things he could've commented on. The fact that he specifically picked their physical appearance seems to be saying something.

Eh, if Tali can get along with Legion, she'll probably be willing to put up with Jacob.

I think that's her response to all of them.
I like how Shepard is using the typical, unstable, one-handed movie pose and Tali is using a stable, modified-Weaver stance for holding her pistol. Who's supposed to be the badass soldier again?
Tali obviously knows how to handle herself in combat. That one of the things I really like about the character; she's competent without being a Mary Sue; she makes mistakes, but they're generally not idiot-ball mistakes.

Well, the squad dialogue is probably tougher to do (gotta get a bunch of VAs) but there's extensive reference to squadmates in LotSB. Next best thing as far as I'm concerned.
