How would one make tougher skin?

There are 5 upgrades for shepard in game where some type of fibers are "weaved" into the skin, i would assume quarians would have something similar, albeit on a smaller scale due to lack of funding. It would be handy to have skin resistant to cuts if your immune system is weak.
edit: Oh, beaten to it, dash it all.

On a more "ouch" concept, I suspect their bodies are modified to accommodate the section seals of their suits. I know Tali mentions specifically blocking off a surface infection... wait, now I can't remember what she says. But anyway, a section seal would be of more use the further it can penetrate into the body and seal it off.

synthetic fibers can be woven through the skin, dramatically reducing
damage taken from most attacks. These fibers also act as a medi-gel
conduit, improving healing.

sounds expensive....

Medical procedures on Quarian's are completely difficult... but not impossible.

With luck, she can find one in a box on a mission.

I could use this. :P

More time consuming than resource heavy I believe.
Tali would have to have been altered prior to her pilgrimage I would imagine.
We humans equate money to everything, but if the equipment is already there, just the small amount of material needed for the fibers is all it actually costs.
Tali, like most quarians, pay for their items through service to the fleet.

I'd suggest that the average ME cybernetic is a. internal and b. unobtrusive. We know of a number of examples of cybernetics: biotic implants/amps, whatever quarian cybernetics are (described as "modest"), Shep's Lazarus implants, the cybernetics they used to save Garrus' life, and Saren's stuff.

Given that Saren's cybernetics are the only ones there that are particularly visible, I think ME just doesn't go for obvious cyberware.

On the matter of quarian cyberware, then, I think it's probably uplinks to the suit for biomonitoring and pharmaceutical dispensing. Pacifien brings up an interesting idea about the suit seals, though. I've always wondered how you do internal suit partitioning.

I can imagine her bending over and rummaging through a box mumbling or humming to herself

Inflatable material would create the needed seal I think.  A donut styled ring around an upper arm could seal the lower and  upper parts as well as provide a tourniquet (sp)  incase of serious damage.
If the seals actually entered the body, then there were be seals to seal the seals.
Tali just don't look much like the michelin man to warrant that type of seal. IMO

The quarian envirosuits are magic, as much is i would like to know how they work, just about everything they do seems impossible in one way or another.

The only way they could do all the things claimed in game is if quarian technology is incredibly advanced even by mass effects standards.

The writers aren't scientists/technicians/whatever and are only writing what they think will work, or sounds cool. Or just for the hell of it.

Inflatable gaskets (in my experience, probably isn't completely applicable to sci-fi) work okay when there's not much pressure differential.  Oh, and when they're used against something unyielding, unlike skin.

Though, if the idea is just to keep particles out, I guess you wouldn't need that effective of a seal.

Edit: and, of course, the bottom line is what mrsph said.  Starships move at the speed of plot and all that.

Same thing with the designers. If it looks believable and cool, it works. That's probably why almost all aliens only have three digits and bent shins.

Most aliens have three fingers because it is easier to animate.

Do you think it'd look better if Tali had four fingers instead of three?

But they use the same animations as the five-fingered folks.

Edit:  Just like the four-fingered folks like Thane.

No idea. But it would probably look better when she holds a gun.

It's not that say, Tali's suit makes sense, but that we try to make it work.

BW designed the suit. It's just fun trying to figure out how they can do what BW says they can.

That's why Tali can hold a pistol with only one finger.^_^

Like the "these suits have more pockets than you think" deal.

Three fingered hands must be incredibly strong. Tali could probably squeeze the juice out of an apple.

Those dang well better not be 'pockets' on the front of Talis  suit! :)
Okay, shutting up now.  Sorry NuclearBuddha. :)

I have to admit that her fingers do seem powerfull. Makes sense to me. Although I totaly  expect them to have custom made gun-helds. You wont see them in game though.

BTW Just imagine Quarian playing PS3 - she would suck so much...
