Here's a question I got on my forum about Tali.

I have a question about Tali's intelligence. Do you believe she's as intelligent as the average quarian or that she's exceptional even amongst the quarians (I tend to see quarians as being one of the more intelligent species...I'm sure this is debatable buy I'm explaining my views).

I just feel as if her intelligence is underplayed in game. I'm very much drawn to intelligent characters, which is a large part of the reason I like Liara and Miranda as characters. With those two, I like that we can gleam from a few conversations with them that they are exceptionally intelligent in comparison to the average human or asari. I really don't get this feeling with Tali, but I feel as if I should get it and that I should appreciate her as much as I do the other two characters for having an abundance of smarts.

thoughts?

Isn't it stated directly in the game that she is a genius even among her people? Don't want to bore the commander with technical things. She built the shield upgrade from things she already knew, that is more than good enough for me.

I am sick of all the speculation and teasing BioWare is doing for the new game. Binary codes, and ****.

Anyways, what's new with our favorite love interest?

The quarians are noted mechanical geniuses. Tali has had the absolute best training among her people, and is noted to be one of their very best.

That should speak volumes.

Being the best of the best has value.

Also, Tali hasn't really been given a chance to show off her specific form of intelligence.  The brief time on her father's ship shows a remarkable ability to glean a lot of information from the computers/diagrams/Geth parts that she comes upon... but besides that, there is little.  Miranda's knowledge of biometrics and Cerberus protocols, however, allow her to show off what she knows.

Simply put, Shepard doesn't come across that many problems requiring an in-depth knowledge of shields or artificial intelligence.

Not to deconstruct the question, but Tali is kind of a special case:  in ME1, we simply don't have an average quarian to compare her to.

That said, in ME2 she seems plenty brainy compared to the Admiralty board.

Would have been a great opportunity to show some of that off in overlord <_<

Yeah, during the suicide mission select screen. It's, like, the first or second line on her bio card.

Exactly.  I don't understand why Bioware doesn't give you actual plot bonuses for using different characters.  For example, in Overlord (this example would work better if Overlord was in the vanilla game, but so be it), having Tali along could have allowed a different passage to the "Core" or some way to make the final fight easier.  Have her technical skills showcased by slowing the data "packets", for example.

Hey! That's my question! XD

I guess I was wondering if Tali's intelligence was exceptional even amongst the quarians. If so, I wish this would be a bigger part of her character as depicted in game. With Miranda (and Liara) I feel this is the case and I like this a lot. I am the type that loves extraordinary smart women in literature or mediums like video games. But, I've often wondered why I don't like Tali for the same reason? Is it b/c she doesn't posses intelligence beyond the average quarian or that it just isn't ever explicitly shown much in game? I'm leaning towards the latter. If so, I think it should be shown off more, as that could be an interesting part of her character (at least, to me).

As CC said, it is stated in text on the suicide mission selection screen. It's just a failure to express it.

No kidding, but I don't remember BW EVER having squadmate chatter in any expansion pack.

Harder to notice during ME1 since your team was pretty much mute.

There was the comment about her being a quick learner about the ship, that probably should have hinted towards it a little.

First off, seeing your profile picture makes me want to play Lair of the Shadowbroker.  Such.  Good.  Expansion.

Anyway...

I would say that there simply isn't a chance to showcase her relative intelligence.  It doesn't help her that her very expertise, A.I. work, is seen as the ultimate crime among the quarian people.  I think some techno-banter between Tali and Daro Xen would have been interesting, as they debate the probabilities of controlling the Geth.  We must also remember that the comparisons to other quarians naturally makes Tali look bad, as you rarely come across a quarian doing something intelligent.:

-Getting killed by mechs
-Getting killed by Varren
-Getting killed by geth
-Selfing self to slavery
-Getting arrested
