I've never played ME1, so I didn't get to experience what characters were like in that game. I'm only considering buying it because I don't like how the council is dead in my regular game, and everyone hates humans. =/
BUY IT.
SERIOUSLY.
Three Four reasons why (and that pertain to Tali):
1) You see how Tali and Shepard originally got to know each other
2) She is a tank with shotguns, and once you upgrade her with special quarian armor and put with with Liara, she's an unstoppable beast.
3) You can help Tali on her Pilgrimage; it's a sidequest and easy to miss, but this has bit of an effect on how you interact with her on Freedom's Progress.
4) There's a cheevo for having her in your party most of the time.
Here's some other reasons:
5) You get to meet several awesome characters including Kaidan, Ashley, Wrex, Garrus, and Liara
6) You can decided if the Council lives or dies, which could have unforseeable ramifications in ME3 (there is definitely a tone difference in ME2....)
7) You can also decide to either kill Wrex, Ashley, or Kaidan. These decision was important enough for BioWare to put into their interactive comic for the PS3, so they obviously mean something.
8) The banter in LotSB is a lot more epic.
