And as nuclearbuddha said, quarians will probably have a similar life expectancy to humans, as may turians because theirs aren't mentioned. So it annoys me when people accuse others romancing Tali as being 'wrong' because there are only 5 years between her and Shepard. Also it is just a game. There is a larger age gap between Shepard and Thane. It does baffle me...
I was thinking about this my entire drive to work, so here I go with a friggin thesis paper lol
*takes deep breath*
Herein lies the one true sticky wicket in dealing with differentiating lifespans, specifically, in Tali's case: Until there is a concrete lifespan for Quarians, there really can be no argument at all, as we're dealing with an obvious unknown. Likely, Tali's lifespan is somewhere in the range of ME Humans (somewhere between 100-200 probably), since Bioware didn't feel it necessary to point out that their lifespan was extreme in any way, like the Salarians or Asari. In that case, the age difference is apparent.
But lets suppose, for a moment, that it
is in the extreme, since it
is an unknown. Let's suppose that it's similar to Salarians (avg lifespan of 40 years). Then, dealing purely in ratios, we can compare the two directly. Shepard, at 31 years of age in ME2, with a lifespan of 150 years, has lived just over 1/5th of his life. Tali, at 24, with a hypothetical lifepspan of 40, would have lived more than 1/2 of her life already. Putting them both on the same scale, in this instance, it would be like Shepard, at 31, dating a 75 year old. Again, this is purely hypothetical, but it does put things into perspective, and show how pointless it can be to argue the age difference when Tali's lifespan is unknown.
What's always seemed odd to me is that one of the main criticism of the Shep/Tali relationship is the "eww he's too old" argument, and yet I've never heard anyone apply the same to the Shep/Liara relationship, in which, based solely on ratios, Shepard is absolutely robbing the cradle. As previously stated, Shepard, at 31, has lived apprx 1/5th of his life. Liara, at 108, with a 1000 year lifespan, has lived over 1/10th of her life. Put on the same scale, that would be like Shepard, at 31, dating a 15 year old girl.
However, falling back on my background in anthropology, the most important point to make in this argument is this:
We, as outsiders, are not qualified to judge what is right and what is wrong. We're dealing with two different species, and two different cultures, which could (and almost certainly do) have widely differing views and opinions on physical, mental or spiritual maturity, regardless of age or lifespan. To view a social interaction from our cultural prepective and to say that it is fundamentally wrong is purely a function of cultural bias and ethnocentrism. The
only people qualified to decide what is and isn't appropriate is those involved in those cultures, and even more so, those involved in those relationships.
Which is a long-winded way of saying if both Tali and Shepard say it's cool, then it's cool;)
