 bioluminescent eyes

*ahem*

Nope.

Her eyes obviously glow. It is plainly visible. Either they are bioluminescent or they are cybernetically enhanced. Either way, they are lambent.

EDIT: Unless the glow is painted onto her helmet... Odd idea that.

No? Pray tell... Why would that be a bad idea?

One good scene is not an excuse for 30000 character murders.

There is no practical reason for luminescent eyes and the visual effect can be as easily explained by a reflective tissue layer behind the eye (like many animals have, called the tapetum lucidum) that is reflecting light given off by a HUD on the inside of her mask.

BioWare may choose to make them luminescent for artistic reasons, but until they confirm as much I view the idea as nonsense.

If you are worried about the inevitable smut mods (30,000 character murders), it would be a simple matter of not downloading them. A kit like that would allow community members that are more serious about the way they want their story to play out, to make their game as it would be for their Shep. Is that not what Mass Effect is all about anyways? Playing through the story in your way?

As far as her eyes being a "reflection" goes, if that is indeed what they are, one of two things should happen. Either the "glow" should be toned down, or her features should be a tad bit more visible to accommodate any light given off by an interior HUD. As it is, her eyes stick out like a sore thumb, and they continue to do so in low light areas. I personally believe her eyes are slightly lambent, but to each his own yes?

In any case, we all appreciate this character that Bioware has given us. We may have differing ideas as to her appearance but we all like her. So lets agree to disagree and leave it at that without declaring one anothers views of her as nonsense. Sound good?

Back to topic.

They continue to glow in low light because they are not reflecting ambient room light, they are reflecting the presumably unchanging constant light of a HUD. You are free to think what you want if you admit the preference is for aesthetic reasons. Or come up with a practical explanation for luminescence.

Yes, we all appreciate the character and hold different views. But only my views are the right ones and I will have you all share them eventually.

Seriously though, I didn't mean to offend when I said it was nonsense. Sorry if it came off that way. ^_^

I cannot come up with any biological reason for her eyes to be lambent... It does not really make sense. I simply cannot see a reason for a HUD to reflect almost exclusively off of her eyes while shedding very little light on her face. I'm sure my idea of her eyes seems as unusual to you, as the lack of light from a HUD on the rest of her face is to me.

Anyhow... No harm, no foul. =P

The light doesn't choose to reflect off her eyes more. The eyes are substantially more reflective. Google image search tapetum lucidum and I think you'll see that eyes can be surprisingly bright under the right conditions.

It's really easy to see how reflective eyes can be if you own a cat. At night, it doesn't take that much light to make a cat's eyes almost glow, even if the rest of the face is virtually invisible in the dark. Also, the idea of bioluminisens seems a little odd to me as presumably it could interfere with the eyes primary function, which is to gather incoming light from the world around you. Then again, I readily see the artistic appeal of bioluminisent eyes.

It's fiction, there is no practical reason for elves to have pointy ears or Miranda to wear skin tight latex into a combat situation either.

When it comes to appearances it's almost always down to aesthetics when it comes fo works of fantasy/sci-fi.

Personally I'd like quarians to have glowing eyes, I think it'd look good.

Obviously Sci-Fi needs some grounding in reality, but you can't expect it to adhere to reality in the same way as something set in the current day is, especially when we are talking about races  and creatures that don't exist.

yes,
i agree with this,
sci-fi wouldn't be sci-fi without some stretches imo.

and the sciency thing earlier that makes my cat's eyes glow when she attacks me at 3am also makes sense. Posted Image

Unfortunately, I just can't agree with them having eyes like a cat. If you look, her entire eye glows, not just the pupil. Sure, the glow effect diffuses from the pupil, but it's definitely beyond the boundaries of the pupil itself.

Therefor, glowing eyes, yessssssss...!

It just makes no sense to me to have flashlights built into y-- oooh

Yeah. I will stick with reflectivity because in the real world that is what would make more sense :pinched:

Sweet image rune, as for the current dicussion. I also think reflection due to the HUD in her helmet. Kind of like the Holo interface for Iron Man.

You know that whole concept never even crossed my mind. Saw her eyes and thought "Ooooooh bright eyes... Purdy!"
I suppose the assumption that humans do not exhibit eyeshine therefore neither do quarians, IS rather silly. Then again... Half naked Jack going under fire is also silly. I can excuse Miranda since Cerberus uniforms have the possibility of containing interwoven carbon fibers or some other material to reinforce them. But going into a warzone wearing absolutely nothing to protect you is crossing a line for me. I can see your point Rune, and yes Mass Effect is heavily grounded in science, however... Jack going into combat half naked is in the game so I think I will stick with my nonsensical lambent quarian eyes. Purrrrdy =D

I don't expect it to be heavily grounded in reality. Mass effect fields are complete and utter bull****, and I'm fine with that because the game would fall apart without them. Quarians having luminescent eyes isn't like that. There's an equally suitable and more practical explanation in reflective eyes, so I say why choose the former?

Pre-Billion Credit Man Shepard can KO Wrex by slapping him with a shotgun, Jack goes into combat with half of her birthday suit on, Haestrom's sun incinerates local wildlife, fries shields and electronic weapons, yet does not even give you blisters, gas clings to krogan skin seemingly for the sole purpose of burning them to a crisp. There is more weirdness to add in there, so I say... Why can't quarians have purdy glowing eyes?

EDIT: I forgot that the savage cold of space does not phase Miranda (her very visible clevage most likely gives off massive heat of it's own), Morinth/Samara (they are both cold anyways), Zaeed (since he is just a badass), Jack (ehhhhh... Just because I guess), and Grunt (because he is GRUNT! Why else?).

It would look sexier... :innocent: I see them as being similar to Riddick's eyes.

That said, I imagine you are correct, and that their eyes do not actually glow. Especially seeing as Tali's are purple and she has a purple faceplate whereas those with black faceplates tend to have yellow/white eyes. So it seems likely that it's due to reflections of light and whatnot.

I think Tali has bright eyes, but not quite luminescant, as runescape said, I think it's just the relection inside the helmet.

When the camera pans behind Tali's helmet in the romance scene, you see that there are lights and stuff inside, so it probably just reflects off her eyes.

You can also see the outline of a very human-like nose through her helmet.
