And welcome Flashheart!

Thanks for the warm reception, Tasha! I don't normally get emotional reading these forums but that "welcome Flashheart!" line has had me smiling like a cheshire cat for seven minutes now. Sorry if I messed up the quote. It's my first day and I'm still trying to work these forums out.Posted Image
Null, does your name have any connection to the Metal Gear Solid character?

And finally, just so this post has something to do with Tali:
Does anyone else think it would be swell if Bioware fixed it so that popular characters such as Tali and Garrus (can't have one without the other) survied the SM in ME3's default story? That way they could get the same attention as guaranteed returning characters such as Liara, and by making Tali and Garrus integral to the story from the ground up it would change the writers focus from "including a character if they lived in ME2" to "working around a characters death". Does that make sense to anyone? I know that at least two characters had to survive the SM in ME's cannon plot (one of which is almost certianly Miranda), but who's to say there couldn't be more? Maybe for once Shepard doesn't have to be a heartless bast*rd?Posted Image

The problem with this are that there are more than one death scenes and variations that could happen.
The only way I could see this working where they can be in ME3 by default and still die, is the 'death' scene where Garrus or Tali are taken away by the seeker swarms if the biotic shield fails. You don't actually see them 'die' and therefore it is open to interpretation.
The engine room explosion and the collector rocket, unfortunately, are both very definately 'death' scenes. Perhaps not being able to get up after defeating the human reaper if taken along by Shepard to the final battle, could possibly mean they are still alive, but I am sure Shepard would have checked.
So it will be difficult, but not impossible.
Vespaz's picture is very pretty, but I do envision quarians to look more robotic? (Not in a synthetic way, hard to explain.) Iari from Summoner 2 springs to mind, let me just find a picture...
Edit: I couldn't find a decent close up of Iari, but here is a Tali for top of the page, about to show what it means to be the tech specialist!

This is my possibly my new favourite interpretation: Didn't post the image as the artist has said you need permission.

I'd like this with maybe something synthetic in place, like on the picture in the post above this one.

Although not so good if you dislike her looking slightly elven. =]

^ Wow, that is a brilliant interpretation. And it's ok, because elves are cool.

There is no evidence or logical reasoning to support either side in that debate.

Well on the subject of what Tali looks like I find that she'd look more like this:
argetlam350.deviantart.com/favourites/38150926
Even though the mask she wears is purple I also believe her skin maybe purple as well. I'd prefer this over the the other image shown slightly above and on the last page, looks a bit to human.

Well anyways in another thread on what character you'd bring over from ME2 to DA2 well I have to say while going through deviant art I find an awesome version of Tali in a fantasy looking way that would go well to Dragon Ages style of characters. Just thought it'd be interesting to say and show:

The reason I think I don't particularly like this one is that she reminds me of a cat.

Personally I have no issues if quarians look very similar to humans, it's not like every species needs to be radically different.

It is nice skin tone, but she looks too old and wise for being 25. It is an image that may suit another quarian, but not Tali, in my opinion.

This one is one of my favourite interpretations... I'd just like she's got a more pallid or faded skintone (she cannot have a colorful skintone passing her whole life away from direct light because of the envirosuit) and possibly a little visible implant somewhere, like the "tecnho-dots" or her forhead in that most famous fanart. The idea of the double nostrils is quite great... it makes her immediately more alien-looking but without alterning the overall impression of looking at a face attractive for human canons too.  Dunno about the hairs... I guess that even if quarians had them Tali can't hide a Rapunzel-like locks of hairs under her helmet lol

Hehe, I was just wondering. I can't see quarians with hair. But it does seem odd that humans are the only race with hair...

Aside from the slight elvish look, I personally think this is spot on.  Ignoring the "placeholder" effect, where the face seems to sometimes distort behind the mask (intentional im sure), we can clearly see a normal sized nose, slightly wider eye position (but not enough to feel awkward) and a distinctly alien shaped eye.  When I look at her through the mask I immediately think elf meets the standard 'little grey men' aliens that we know so well.

I think I get that impression because of the position of the eyes.  I feel that her face should be very slender to support the wider eye position, otherwise it will look awkward.  That picture, supports the slender face idea.  You can also kinda see the lines/shape of her face and what I can see in game lends toward a small mouth and chin.

I can also easily see her eyes being almost solid in color, similar to Thanes'.  But in Thane's memory scenes, sometimes his eye color lightens up, allowing you to see the iris and pupil of his eyes.  I think her having smoky white eyes with just a hint of an iris would work quite well to the same effect.  This would also serve to explain how her eyes, in their entirety, seem reflective.  As creatures with reflective eyes on earth only reflect light from the iris area of their eyes, but quarian eyes seem to reflect over their entire area.

Now that I've given my 2 cents on that I have an idea on the hair thing, and I feel it is quite obvious.  So many people here want aliens to be alien.  But I distinctly remember reading about a theory that Hawking feels explains what we might see in creatures from another world.  For the life of me I can't remember what he called it but it was very much like this one, Convergent Evolution: http://en.wikipedia....rgent_evolution

Basically, an organism living in very similar conditions in different areas (or planets in this case) will typically evolve along a similar path.  The best way to think of it is water taking the path of least resistance.  If we find a planet almost identical to earth with life, you can expect to find many similarities in earth's life now or life that existed in the past on earth.

This whole idea strongly supports quarians having hair.  Tali herself states that mammals on their homeworld evolved a very symbiotic relationship with the flora.  Mammals were the primary pollenators.  Mammals give birth to live children, nurse their young, and almost always have hair.  Making them extremely alien for the sake of being extremely alien doesn't support what we see at all and would, imho, be stupid.  Quarians obviously can't look very close to humans, but you would have to be blind to not see that the similarities are striking.

This.

I find it unlikely that other mamallian life forms wouldn't have a least some hair.  Refer to my previous post. :D

Still convergent evolution doesn't mean that everything will be egual, especially the macroscopic things. Maybe quarians, and in general Rannoch's animals, doesn't have fur because of the planet's medium temperature, that's highter that Earth's, or Rannoch's "mammals" evolved from dinosaur-like creatures and their're covered of short proto-feathers and not by fur. Or they have fur but most of their bodies are covered by scales, and so on. "Pseudo-mammalian" it's a very vague concept...

Well, I am waaay out of my league here. Biology was never my thing, but I can see logic in your theory. I guess they could have hair, I don't envision Tali to have hair, but as I said, humans are the only race with hair? Yeah right.

But who knows? Maybe the Volus are hairy? :D

That's like saying because humans and geckos are both levo DNA they should look similar.  The handed-ness of quarian chemistry isn't going to have any impact on their appearance.

Edit:  ugh, someone else found "nightcrawler Tali."

Whether quarians have hair or not is up to Bioware. Personally I'd like them not to, but Mass Effect isn't the best about having non-human looking aliens.

Eh, the name suits it well Buddha. As I said I like a lot the overall concept, but the not skintone... she indeed looks a bit too much like Nightcrawler or Mystique with those colours ^_^

LOL.  At least the original was linked.  Over the months there have been a number of edited versions.  The one with the pink lipstick was probably the worst.

Like I said, that one's been around a while.  The threads in the old days decided on that name pretty quick.
