"Humans, asari, salarians, all soft. Quarians, not so much."
I am still very curious to know what he means by this.
They are cybernetic? Scaly? Just have tough skin?

I think he meant tough skin. He was talking about cutting people open, I think.

I read somewhere that originally, Bioware was going with a more traditional "gray man" alien:

Granted, I highly doubt Quarians in their finalized form resemble the "grays" as much as at the start, but with some of the hints you get from behind the visor in both 1 & 2, you can certainly see the similarities. Would also explain the somewhat glowy/reflectiveness of the eyes.

I wonder if the eyes are reflective or are they naturally glowing.

Actually, he seems to be talking specifically about severing spines. So it could be that quarians have a different arrangement of spinal column.Ramirez Wolfen wrote...

Anyway, the statement is far too ambiguous to get much from. He could just as easily be talking about how it's hard to punch through their suits.

Reflective, in my opinion.

What exactly are the Quarians made out of? I know it's a dumb sounding question, but I always wondered this. Some of it seems to be like cloth or something (I'm not talking about the hoods, I'm not that dumb lol).

Flesh and bone? Heheh. I assume you mean their suits. The suits are probably whatever awesome space age materials that everyone else's suits are made of. Whatever technobabble metals, ceramic, carbon-weave, composite, synthetic diamond you want to call it. The decorative cloths, like the hood, are probably some sort of thick, durable cloth.Ramirez Wolfen wrote...

I have also considered that, although logically speaking that'd apply for all armour wearing species.

LOLZ I did mean suits! And that seems about right (for me at least). About the eyes, I always thought that the eyes grow naturally. I don't know about reflection, because what are the eyes reflecting? And why only the eyes? If itwas reflection, wouldn't we get some more highlights of their faces? But then again, what would cause eyes to grow naturally? Maybe something like the fireflies do with their butts lol.

Somewhat less so, I think, since Grunt's not likely to ever encounter a quarian out of a suit, and there are plenty of non-armored humans, turians, and asari running around.Machines Are Us wrote...

It's always been assumed that the inside of the visor had a heads-up-display on it. ME:Ascension seems to confirm this, since it talks about how the visors provide vision mag and that sort of thing. The light from this display would reflect from her eyes. And not the surface of the eye: the interior, like a cat's eyes.Ramirez Wolfen wrote...

Anyway: the real reason is, of course, so that the player can see the eye. Any speculation is just trying to make sense out of what is an aesthetic choice by the game designers.

Ever taken a picture of a cat with the flash on, or seen a wolf at night? Their eyes "glow" when the light hits them the right way because of a piece of reflective tissue behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum. Helps them see in the dark. Some people have surmised that quarians have a similar structure and the effect is constant because of HUD light from their visor.Ramirez Wolfen wrote...

Speaking of which, Tali's new visor is kind of annoying.

As for a quarians 'skin?' I know I am in the minority here, but I always envisioned it as a metallic texture, but smoother than a turians. Not an exoskeleton or a robot, but just metallic skin. It would also make sense of Grunt's comment (if it is to be taken to heart, that is.)

I'm not saying she has to be radically different, I just would like to see perhaps the different skin tone and double set of nostrils, I just can't see quarians looking completely human like in the other image due to the odd leg structure and three fingers and toes. To me just doesn't seem right.Machines Are Us wrote...

Well on the subject of what Tali looks like I find that she'd look more like this:

Even though the mask she wears is purple I also believe her skin maybe purple as well. I'd prefer this over the the other image shown slightly above and on the last page, looks a bit to human.
The reason I think I don't particularly like this one is that she reminds me of a cat.
Personally I have no issues if quarians look very similar to humans, it's not like every species needs to be radically different.
True, I guess the purple is a bit to dark but I do like how it looks. Still has a human look but sort of alien as well which is nice. Same with the four nostrils looks great. As for hair well, I can't really image her with hair, odd but just can't for some reason. Meh I could care about the implant stuff, I guess yes she would have them but with or without it doesn't matter much to me.Alienmorph wrote...

This one is one of my favourite interpretations... I'd just like she's got a more pallid or faded skintone (she cannot have a colorful skintone passing her whole life away from direct light because of the envirosuit) and possibly a little visible implant somewhere, like the "tecnho-dots" or her forhead in that most famous fanart. The idea of the double nostrils is quite great... it makes her immediately more alien-looking but without alterning the overall impression of looking at a face attractive for human canons too. Dunno about the hairs... I guess that even if quarians had them Tali can't hide a Rapunzel-like locks of hairs under her helmet lol
