It’s been ages since I last had the time to read these forums (I’ve just started university and my timetable is fubar). I’ll try and make up for my absence with this list of a few different variations of “Tali haters” that I’ve come across in this otherwise wonderful community. I’ve also attempted to psychologically profile the different Tali haters to better understand their… um… let’s say irrational behaviour. If anyone thinks I’ve missed anyone or disagrees with something I’ve said, let me know and I’ll consider editing the list to include your suggestions.
Hipster-haters: People who go out of their way to express their dislike for Tali due to their perception her being “mainstream”. These haters usually describe Tali as being too sweet and sugary, and they like to demonstrate their individuality by choosing random profile pictures. By nature Hipster-haters are often Jackmancers, but non-Jackmancers may fall into this category as well.
Trolls: Similar to Hipster-haters in that they also flame Tali for being popular, but with one important difference. Trolls post hate comments purely for the thrill they get from kicking the proverbial hornets’ nest. Their comments make extensive use of slander, offensive statements and lies to generate as many responses as possible. To a troll, one popular character is as good to flame as any other, so long as they get their desired fan rage responses. A typical troll will continue to post in a forum until it is either dealt with by a moderator or “starved” by a lack of responses.
Miranda-extremists: People whose dislike for Tali directly stems from their choice of Miranda as their favourite LI. With Tali and Miranda being the 2 most popular LI’s, Miranda-extremists are the natural enemy of Talimancers, with disputes over which character is more popular a frequent sight. This rivalry is probably born out of a simple sense of tribalism, the need to affirm one’s gang is superior by comparing it to the next biggest gang on the block. As a result, comments from Miranda-extremists are usually something like, “Tali sucks, Miranda is better and here’s why…”.
Miranda-extremists almost universally believe they have numerical superiority over Talimancers. They also tend to think the polls section is skewered so they disregard any poll that shows Tali as more popular than Miranda (Seriously Bioware, why won’t you release the official LI statistics?). Due to these beliefs, Miranda-extremists don’t feel very threatened by Talimancers and hence, are not as protective and vocal as they could be.
Liara-extremists: Easily identified by their profile pictures of either Liara or Samara, these are the most complex and enduring type of Tali Hater. Liara-extremists are - generally- confused by Tali’s popularity and unable to understand what people see in her. Their inability to comprehend why some players choose Tali over Liara often turns to frustration. More often than not Liara-extremists will directly attack Tali’s fans rather than Tali herself, e.g. “ Tali mancers are twelve year old boys/40 year old virgins.”.
However, when Liara-extremists do go after Tali they don’t hold back. Their posts mostly start with a statement about how they don’t understand what we all see in Tali, followed by a detailed list of reasons explaining why Tali is their least favourite character/LI. Liara-extremists also occasionally demonstrate that they have no sense of irony (joke) by mentioning that they believe Tali was written for “horny teenage boys and lesbians”, disregarding the fact that the Asari already fulfil that role.
Until recently I used to believe it was impossible to reason with any Liaramancer. However the sight of a Liaramancer politely talking with Talimancers on this thread the other day has caused me shift my stance towards them.
Garrusmancers who hate Tali: Non-existent.
