I like both ways. As it is, it's nice with all the long build-up instead of the flirt-at-first-sight. If they'd been romanceable in ME1, I wouldn't have minded. It would've been interesting with them coming back to the crew in ME2 and all that.MadMapper wrote...

Oh please, VS dying because Bioware's too lazy to write their dialogue for ME3? I find that very hard to believe. And I would personally be outraged if the VS died, despite hating Ashley and only slightly liking Kaidan, simply because then Bioware forces you to only romance Liara if you want to stay ''loyal'' throughout the full trilogy.
BTW am I the only one that is happy that you can't romance Tali/Garrus in ME1??
I find more good that the relation builds up with trust and time, and then flourish in ME2.
What matters however, is that we CAN romance them.
