I love that everything Shepard says and does to show his affection for Tali, occurs before he knows what she looks like.
----------------------
"If you're scared, I don't blame you, but I don't want anyone else, I want you. And I'll do whatever I have to to make this work." Tali: "I've never shown my face to anyone, but I'm ready to show you, if I can do it without dying"
"Do your research quickly Miss vas Normandy. Captain's orders."----------------------------
He feels so strongly for her that he looks beyond the physical, and that's the moral of the story. Seeing her for the first time, looking at him in a brand new light, was most likely a divine, life-changing experience for both of them, and I think he smiled not because he found out that she was attractive, but likely because he discovered that it never mattered. What did was the beautiful moment they were sharing and the bond between them. Tali was probably wearing a very anxious expression, and he might have been smiling for that reason, additionally. Then her trepedation quickly dissolved into jubilation, instincts took over, and the rest is unwritten history.
That's just the way I see it. Shepard most likely knows what quarians look like in general, but that doesn't depreciate what I feel is the underlying message. Everyone has their own take on what the relationship means to them which are not more or less valid

So that's why I am indifferent about seeing her face. On one hand, seeing her would (ironically) provide undeniable security in my non-materialistic attraction to Tali, and on the other hand, it never mattered to Shepard in the first place. Tali is a beautiful person regardless of what she looks like. Predator-face included
