Tali has to recover from time to time. Can't have a fever ALL the time.
And... maybe there are other reasons...?
Experimenting with Shepard, maybe...
Nice and open to interpretation.

It's been theorized that exposure to the same "allergen" over time will strengthen Tali's resistance to it. But Shep is not exactly a static system. He's going to be tracking in different stuff all the time. Intimacy will remain dangerous to a greater or lesser degree.Andaius20 wrote...

So, something for the nights in recovery, as others have said.

Is there a difference in toe placement on males/females/etc? I never noticed such a thing...
Males lack the third toe, and Geth have a third toe on the inside.
Females have the third toe on the outside, and a few fan theories involve that toe.

Concerning who Tali would be friends with on the SR2...Miranda and Jacob are out ("don't forget to introduce yourself to the onboard AI"
I guess she'd get along well with Kasumi and Kelly, since they both seem to think she's sweet, and I think she might enjoy gossip. Oddly enough, I think she'd also get along with Samara, since they both know what it's like to sacrifice your personal interests for the sake of a greater purpose. Mordin would probably work too, since they both have a sciencey/nerdy slant. Other than that, Ken & Gabby, and Joker.
Also, since I've seen it mentioned, I'm not sure Garrus would get along with either Samara or Jacob. Samara does have the whole black & white thing down pat, but she also follows all her rules for their own sake, and that's something Garrus might disapprove of. As for Jacob, not only is he Cerberus, but when you dump him for either Garrus or Thane, he makes some pretty unnecessary personal attacks on them that show an anti-alien streak.
One more thing about Samara: you can hear all her lines without romancing her (or well, trying). Her "romance" starter is very clear, and only occurs in the last convo with her, I believe. In any case, it won't make you miss out on any major interactions with her. I wonder if it changes her "I wish to meditate" brush-off line though...
Concerning the pacing of the romances, Tali and Garrus definitely have the advantage of previously featuring in ME1. It's extremely important for both of them, since they're both based on trust. Garrus otherwise has very little dialogue (and it is true that you can't romance him if you didn't recruit him in ME1), and the level of trust Tali needs to achieve to consider romance wouldn't be believable with just ME2. Conversely, the other romances suffer from lack of time to develop the relationship. And this is especially problematic in Jack's case. I've been thinking about making a MaleShep for her, but I keep hearing very conflicting things, so I don't know whether I should try or not. I'd say lack of time is also a problem in Thane's case, but I hear it's not as bad (he definitely has less issues than Jack), so I'll just let my ThaneShep see for herself. And, of course, lack of time also serves to cheapen both Miranda's and Jacob's romances (but their romance scenes are also very guilty of this).
So yeah, I hope this is somehow addressed in ME3. I know we can't have everything, but I do feel it's an issue.

Miranda: Cerberus
Jacob: Cerberus and made that AI crack, intentional or not
Jack: I don't think Jack really opens up if you don't romance her as a male, so Tali would probably avoid her.
Legion: She'd probably space it on a moments notice.
Zaeed: Keeps to himself.
Kasumi: Gal-pals.
Thane: Not much interaction, might find his profession distasteful.
Kelly: She'd have some interactions with her as the ship psychologist, could be a decent friend.
Samara: Not much interaction.
Garrus: Both on SR1, she knows he'll watch her back and vice-versa.
Grunt: Nothing in common.
Ken/Gabby: They'd grow on her.
Joker: Friendly.
Mordin: He's probably the one she went to for her antibiotics/herbal supplements/advice.
Shepard:
So she'd have Kasumi, Ken, Gabby, Joker, Garrus, (possibly Kelly) and Shepard to hang around with. Not too bad for a Cerberus ship.
I'll agree with you on pacing, but I think that's more of a technical limitation than anything else. I'm sure if Bioware had all the time and money in the world, Tali's romance would take multiple hours, slowing building up from a relationship built on mutual trust. I haven't done it, but what I hear about the Jack romance is that its less of a mutual thing, and more of Shepard coercing her into a relationship.

Yeah, I seem to remember one of the developers also stating that they had lots of material planned for the romance scenes that they had to cut out...
...ME2 Director's Cut, anyone?
Concerning the Jack romance, my TaliShep actually stumbled into it by accident. He said that he didn't want sex and that he wasn't looking for a relationship. I thought this might actually work, but noooo...the very next convo he had with her was "pick me or Tali". Since I'd saved right before that just to play it safe, I reloaded, and never spoke to Jack again on that playthrough. It didn't sound all that coercive to me up to that point. It's just that the game doesn't acknowledge that you just want to be friends. But maybe it gets worse afterwards, who knows.

Depending on the players decisions, I see Tali's and Legion's relationship can serve as a means to bridge the divide between the two races or as the flashpoint and start of the war between the two races, with one race attempting genocide on the other.
As far as the extra toe on female Quarians my guess the extra toe aids the females during their gestational period allowing them to maintain their balance while carry their baby's extra weight.
Tali has the most elaborate pattern on her head covering whereas all the other females have a generic pattern. It might be the only way to help the player pick out Tali in a crowd of other Quarians.
I really do hope Tali returns as a significant team member in ME3. It would not be the same game experience without her or Garrus for that matter.
It was her "I been watching you for so long" dialog that really sold it for me. That whole moment proves just how loving and devoted she is towards Shepard. Feelings she has had for a very long time it seems.
