Yeah, but I don't really see the point of doing that...It has no functional usefulness. Unless it's solely for people who like listening to accents...

Exactly. Think about the things you can get today. Many of them can have customizations added to them that are only for show and don't actually have a function. Adding an accent to a translator could be similar.

Ok, I can imagine this for a Shepard who's already developed feelings for Tali and finds her accent cute. But why would he have a quarian accent customization installed in ME1, when he's (probably) never even met a quarian before?

On a different topic, due to one of our current occupations in Clan V, I've thought of something. What if the quarians we hear speaking with an accent are actually the ones that are speaking Standard Galactic, while the ones we hear without an accent are the ones using a translator? It would make sense that a translator wouldn't pick up on the accent.

This would mean that Tali and Shala'Raan, for example are speaking Standard Galactic. While Daro'Xen, Kal'Reegar or Zaal'Koris are speaking quarian, and we hear them through a translator.

Does that sound plausible at all?

I think its possible. But as this is the future, I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy more advanced translators that could be programmed with an accent.

You would figure that Quarians about to embark on their Pilgrimage would learn Standard Galactic to get around the galaxy with relative ease beforehand. Tali could learn English to speak to her Captain more fluently, as well as her voice sounding more 'pure'. Shepard could learn Kellish, then talk dirty to eachother around crewmembers and friends without worry, unless they'd want them to hear it. ;) Tali seems too shy to do that though, maybe Shepard could convince her. Overall, learning the other's language would further solidify the trust between the two.

If a translator wouldn't translate accent, then most voices would be very similar. It would not be hard to add real time audio effects (like what you can do with expensive software today) making each one more distinguishable.

Ascension mentions some quarians are able to speak English.

Tali might be one of those, she wouldn't speak English all the time, but when she speaks Khelish her translator would adapt to use her voice and accent in English to make the experience more consistent.

I reckon the admirals would be able to speak English too, for diplomatic reasons. Though I also assume Kal, Lia, Valley Girl Quarian and Veetor would not be able to, and would have "default" accents instead.

Where's the fun in that? >.> They should just say dirty stuff to eachother in English then, noone would expect Tali saying those things, would make for some interesting situations.

Still. Shepard learning a whole new language only he and his girlfriend can understand while they're on the ship sounds very amusing.

I mean it wouldn't be only them who can understand Khelish. Everyone has a translator.

The translators cannot be all inclusive of any given language. There will be terms/words used that will not translate. It is also possible that each species provides the datafiles for their language. If there are words they do not or would not care for other races to understand, it is possible that they would leave them out of the data.
Proper names, such as Tali or Shala would be included though.  Just my thoughts.

Considering there was more then 1 accent type when you where on the Flotilla I'm assuming its a ship region like thing. Take the US for instance (or any nation really). Each area has a tendency to produce different accents, and with in that area often times there more then 1 (that sound more or less similiar to people who don't live there).

They are what 13 million or something like that? That's enough people to cause accent differences based off ships. More so if you consider each major ship its own 'state'. Another thing to think about is that, I highly doubt all Quarians spoke/speak the exact same language and never developed multiple languages. That could also be the main driving force behind the multiple accents. Just throwing that out there.

I think names arent translated.

Tali is a name and will be heard by other species as such. Same way as Thane's "Siha".

This reminds me of an episode in Star Trek Enterprise. A bunch of humans are cussing the heck out of some alien ambassadors. And the ambasaddors r like, "Dude wtf r they saying?", and the humans are like, "oh lol they say ur mom is fat."

17 Million, and I'm sure the conclave meetings are broadcasted throughout the fleet. Tali's accent is just something nice the developers threw in. There's isn't any real reason for it.

Agreed.
What is forgotten is that the 17million quarians that make up the one flotilla came from the entire world of Rannoch.
Here is where you find the roots for the different dialects and accents.  It's only been 300 years, so some of the accent may have been lessened it would still be there.  Each of the original (we really don't know how many actually made it off the homeworld to begin with) ships would have come from a specific region.  Tali's came from eastern europe :)

What do you guys think will happen to Tali? She's a pretty popular character and I worry that she will go the way of Aeris in Final fantasy.

As I said earlier, it makes financial sense to bring her back along with the geth incident and many other things, and there are no reasons not to.

But do you think she will die in ME3? As in a canon death like Saren's?

If they kill Tali off for being a Love-Interest then they will have to kill off all the love interests.

BioWare isn't comprised of idiots. They know how to tell a good story without going on required death. They've already done it once, no more.

Believe it is random, but it seems to happen more often if you choose her first.
