Are there any games out there that have widespread critical acclaim yet there is just something about that that keeps you from even trying them?

I for one cannot bring myself to try the Kingdom Hearts series.  Final Fantasy style characters combined with Disney?  No, I just cannot do it.  No matter how hard I try to convince myself otherwise Disney combined with Final Fantasy like characters in an RPG will never EVER be something that appeals to me.  Seeing Goofy and Donald Duck in a JRPG just looks so stupid.

Also, Zelda:Wind Waker and the Nintendo DS Zelda games are the only Zelda games I have not played.  I have heard nothing but great things about these games but I refuse to play them because I cannot get over how stupid cel-shaded Link looks.  He looks like a powerpuff girl.  I dislike most cel shaded games(few exceptions like No More Heroes 1 and 2).

Okami is another game I passed on.  It got exceptional reviews but it looked just too Japanese to me and I felt that it would be confusing.

Perhaps I'm doing myself a disservice here.  Hell, I passed on the Metroid Prime series for a while because I didn't like that they were first person shooters.  When I actually tried them though I loved them.

I refuse to buy/play Modern Warfare 2. I also have no interest in the Street Fighter 4 game.

Yeah I passed on Modern Warfare 2. I used to play Call of Duty games but military style first person shooters have grown very stale in my opinion. I do like first person shooters but I'm sick of the military style setting. I prefer Halo, Half Life or Metro 2033 AD.

Hmm, this is a definitely an interesting one. I will say halo 3 and here is why. I loved the first game. I though it was great, but after the first game when I played the 2 game I was very disappointed by it. The story had its moments, but it was just to short. Then when I went to think about buying halo 3. I saw and heard how short the story was I just didn't get it. I heard reach is pretty long, but I'm just not interested in the halo franchise anymore. AFter halo 3 I just got turned off. I guess the should have really kept the story longer.

Crysis - Actually, anything by Crytek.
Any and all JRPGs.
Any and all beat 'em ups.
Any and all music/rythmn games that aren't Audiosurf.

Edit: I forgot some.

Yes. I just don't play s**t games.

Or games that are predominantly the same colour as my bedroom walls, such as Assassin's Boredom 2.

I'll go ahead and give a mention to Bioshock 2. I played and beat the first Bioshock and as the apparent "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2, one of my favorite games of all time, Bioshock is an absolute disgrace.
Unsatisfying weapons, overly artsy graphics, pointless moral decisions, overly linear, far too action oriented for a game that tries and fails to be scary and I could go on.
Bioshock SUCKED!
Assassin's Creed II is one of those games I both hate and love at the same time.  I loved the atmosphere, the storyline and some of the exploration but moving from point A to point B for so long just as an excuse to prod out the length got really boring.  It's not as bad as the Grand Theft Auto games or Mafia II but the next Assassin's Creed game should have more interesting things to do in the cities.

BioShock 2 is a disappointment, I'll say that much. I enjoyed it, and I do love my Big Sister figure, but it's still a disappointment. The system requirements were completely ridiculous for what it is, and the multiplayer was a total waste of resources. If you went into BioShock and expected System Shock 2, then you're bound to be disappointed. Sadly, I went into BioShock 2 expecting BioShock and found myself disappointed.

God of War series, Metal Gear series, Killzone, (see the pattern yet?). Most other (major) series I've played at least one game of or would play if I had the chance. But from what I've seen of those three series they dont really appeal to me.

On a slightly related note, I didn't like Bioshock at all. For everything great that was said about it... it really fell way short of expectations, though I guess it was worth the $20 I paid for it.

I've spent easily over 100hrs in Fallout 3. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it was a Bethesda game.

I'm not sure about absolutely refusing to play, but there are a few or more I suppose that I thought about trying and then just decided to pass on, just something about it that kept me from trying as you said, Gears of War 1 and 2 for starters.

Halo Reach. It'll probably be awesome, but I'll never play it. Same with Dragon Age 2. That one's on technical principles.

Got another one. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
It's more a matter of principle rather than distaste for the series. I wrestled with a WoW addiction for perhaps two and a bit years (maybe closer to three), finally quitting in January this year. If you ignore the lapse in March/April and the second one I had a bit later, but neither lasted more than a week. I've found myself checking MMO-C and other websites recently in anticipation of Cataclysm, but I refused to try it.
I quit out of boredom and because it got a hold of me, I'm not willing to let myself slip into it again.

Edit: Oh, and I refuse to fund Bobby Kotick.

i will NEVER buy modern warfare 2...first off i tried the game at a party..they were having a tournament AND OMG it was my first time playing and i WON THE TOURNAMENT...the game took no skill..it was totally generic, and i see no way how it sold 20 million copies and got a 94 on metacritic..this game is an abomonation to the gamming community and has tarnished it too with people missing out on 2010s great games for that STUPID PRESTIGE MODE...WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO LEVEL UP ALL THE WAY AND START OVER AGAIN???????

You talk about it as if you're a recovering alcoholic.  I have played World of Warcraft but I never really got addicted.  Running a raid or instance is fun the first one or two times but I don't see how running it again and again is supposed to be fun.  I guess I just don't find MMORPGs entertaining enough to be addictive.
The WOW community  are the saddest, most pitiful gamers imaginable.  I'm hesitant to even call them gamers as most of them are so hopelessly addicted to WOW that they aren't even aware other games exist.  I remember the guild I was in people told me they haven't even played another game in several years.
I stopped playing both because it was boring and because I didn't want to be associated with such pathetic losers.  I remember my guild leader was talking to me on vent about how strung up he was because he thought his girlfriend was cheating on him.  I tried to give him some advice and told him that he should speak to her in person and just politely ask for an honest answer.  He then went on to explain that his "girlfriend" is someone who he's never actually met and that she is a blood elf in game.
I was floored.  WOW players are the biggest losers ever.

I have had co-workers in past jobs who were WOW players and seriously WOW is the only thing they find enjoyment in.  Whenever I talked to them I would try to bring up another subject be it another game, movie, sports, ANYTHING and they would quickly dismiss it..

"yeah that's nice...anyways back to what I was saying, when I was farming in Icecrown blah blah blah".

It's as if WOW Players have NO other hobbies and it's not a really big surprise since WOW is a game that demands so much out of a player that it is practically a full time job.

Well, I can understand the feeling-- kind of, I guess-- but, honestly, I don't think there's a single game that I would refuse to play on principal, whether because it's a favorite of people who I don't care for or for any other reason.

There are critically acclaimed games that I just have zero interest in playing, but I wouldn't refuse to ever try them.  It's just incredibly unlikely I would ever try them, as there are probably hundreds of other games I would sooner play.

Yeah, STALKER is good.  I'm looking forward to RAGE and Duke Nukem Forever too.  Most of all though I want Doom 4.

I'll agree my problem was not that bad, but it still had a large (and negative) impact on my life.

The problem with WoW's community is that it's so big - You see it in all the larger games like Halo and CoD. You see more and more, shall we say, unpleasant people than you would in a smaller community. You have a lot of younger players around, and also a lot of lazy players. I wouldn't go as far as you did in describing the community, but I would agree that a large pecentage of the vocal population is largely unpleasant. You do find the odd good person and if you're lucky and on the right server, a great guild, but for the most part it's a real struggle to find a good group of consistently decent people.

Oh, and I played exclusively on roleplay realms and I was somewhat of an elitist about the rules. That also contributed to me leaving.
