I've been trying to find my saved games for ME1 in the ME2 configuration folder, I've looked through ever folder in the ME1 file and I cant find it. Can I even import steam version ME1 saves into ME2?

Yes you can.
Regardless of DD vs. retail copy, all ME1 saves should be in \\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save, under My Documents (XP) or something like C:\\Users\\Your Username\\ (Vista/7).
You can either use the semi-automatic utility in the ME2 Config tool, in which case that's all you need to know; or you can just copy the files yourself, in which case you'll also need to know that \\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\ME1\\ is the folder they should go in.
