I've noticed that Praetorians will immediately stop their eye beam attack if you move out of line of sight.  This causes a several second delay before they can start the eye beam attack up again.  Note that using cover does not count as being out of line of sight.

So the fastest way to kill them is to stay right behind tall cover but let them see you.  As soon as they start eye beaming you then move behind the cover and they will stop, then move right back out and start blasting them.  Collector beam is the most effective weapon of course but any will work.

Video of the technique here  (not showing speed, but showing how the praetorian stops firing immediately when you go out of line of sight, giving you a chance to come back out and shoot him)

Good catch. Hadn't noticed that one.

However, I've found that the best weapon against him is your squadmates... or the cain :)

Squad mates with Warp definitely speed things up.

Combine this tactic with the Geth Plasma Shotgun and the Praetorian's barrier goes down fast. Sniper or Heavy Pistol for armour.

The tactic of being behind tall cover yet not sticking yourself to it (A button on the xbox) also works well against YMIRs. Position yourself so their machine gun arm (right) is behind the cover but their rocket arm (left) isn't.

For the Praetorians, you can shoot through the outer edges of some cover, while they can't.

Just move around cover and let your squadmates kill it. It focuses exclusively on Shepard when it shoots and the only way it will kill squadmates is if they are underneath it.

Horizon: walk a circle around the relay tower and place squadmates on opposite ends of the tower just out of reach of it's AoE attack.

Collector Ship: Go to the pillar at the left at the bottom of the stairs. Let it follow you around the pillar while staying out of range. Place squadmates at the opposite pillar and let them kill it.

Good one. Very good to know.

Using the Cain is such a waste though, since at most you'll only take out partial health and they'll do the scripted barrier gain.

My best strategy was to

a) Park my squad somewhere where they can shoot him at all times, but not be directly in the Praetorian's path and restoring his barrier (and getting killed in the process)

B) Sprint between two points of cover whenever he comes close and take cover shots in the mean time.

Advantages to this strategy are that it's simple, any class can use it, and it's safe.  The squad is in no danger because the Praetorian locks in on Shepard only.

There are faster ways, depending on class, but this just works for me.

Not really, to be honest - I never use the Cain on anything else, so I always have enough time to fill it up before encountering praetorians.

On Insanity, a direct hit leaves it with around 1/5 lifebar. It takes much less time for squadmates to bring it down from that point, even after it refreshes its barrier. (The armor does not get repaired.) Below Insanity, the Cain one-shots it.

Well, after doing Horizon with my Soldier (insanity) a charged GPS Shot under Heightened AR with 2 upgrades+Shield Piercing took down only little less than half of its barrier in one shot.

GPS is the Preatorian-Killer.

Take cover when you are hurt and keep firing, position your character so its always easy to switch cover if its needed.

Collector beam weapon will make short work of praetorians which have been stated, it is handy to have additional protection like barrier which you can always switch out if you dont like it.

This works the same for Gunships too it seems anything that flies is programmed to just focus on Shepard and follow him/her while ignoring squad mates. Makes everything really easy.

If you maintain distance and keep kiting it, it will never put its Barrier up until its armor is severely weakened. Try not to let it get close and it won't do that biotic stomp move.

The funny thing was that big bug was bugged and at one moment didn't think of continuing to move. It just floated there in the distance where I couldn't see its defence-stats, but I just kept hitting it with charged GPS+HAR rounds and it was GG very soon after. I think it was scared of my Renegade Conrad Shepard (And yeah, a Conrad Verner Shepard looks pretty badass scary once he got all his scars Posted Image ).

seriously... you don't even need to shoot it. Just move around the relay tower or the left column in the collector ship and let your squadmates shoot it to death (just out of it's AoE damage range). It only focuses on shepard. Miranda and Grunt on Horizon as well as Thane and Samara on the collector ship make quick work of it. Have them switch between weapons and no problem what so ever.

Using heavy weapons on a silly Praetorian is IMAO a WASTE OF AMMO!

There isn't any real challenge in fighting a Praotorian!

What else would you use them on? Or do they just collect dust on the Normandy?

Heavy weapons - why not use them? I just never was able to stay out of cover long enough to use them against the one on the collector ship. And I tried using the pillar at bottom left ( as suggested ) and the thing killed me thru the pillar with the ground-stomp. My best battle with that was when I brought Miranda and Thane ( Thane had incisor ), and used the Geth Shotgun to get the barrier off. On the other really tough areas I use heavy weapons ( like the opening collector trap ), but this area does not work with heavy weapons for me.

Or on my back.
Seriously, I fired Cain a few times and tried what the others do..but it just somehow does not feel right to me. I simply do not use heavy weapons and wish there was in-game option to remove them. I prefer to kill Praetorians with a heavy pistol.

The pretorian and the scion are basicly organic heavy weapon units. When the scion uses the shockwave, squadmates
even warn "Heavy weapons!".
