Besides Cain the best way (for me that is) is with a fully loaded Collector Particle Beam. When the ammo is over I finish them with a shotgun and my squad's powers.

I only use cain on insanity and to the best of my knowledge, that only took about a 3rd of it's armor down,

You have to hit it with the Cain while its Barrier is down (i.e. blast it before it gets close enough to stomp, or take its barrier down with the Tempest and then blast it.) This will remove about 4/5 of its armor, which it cannot regenerate.
On Hardcore and below, the Cain will one-shot Praetorians.

I usually hit the Praetorian on the collector mission right away with the cain. It takes him down roughly 3/4's and wipes out the abominations underneath.
Then it's a bit of barrier work and kill.

On the CS I hit it with Viper/Pistol until it falls down screaming, then CPB its Barrier down, Viper/Pistol again, GPS/SMG the Barrier down, Viper/Pistol again... The wall at the top of and perpendicular to the first downward ramp is a good starting point, as the Praetorian's beams can't hit you there.

OP was a good tip that worked well.
On Praetorians in general, the always follow Shepard. Kill any minions first, give your team squad warp ammo and just run from cover to cover, watching the team strip away the barriers. Apply teammates Warp as needed. HIt it with everything when barrier is down.

The first Praetorian is always by itself. On the second one it is absolutely vital to kill the Husks and two collectors that spawn along with it first. If you bring two allies with Warp (Thane+Miranda) to collector ship then you will tear up the Praetorian as well as all collectors. If you have warp as well as both teamates then Collectors become a complete joke.
