I absolutely hated the mage, but the elf was kind of fun. She just didn't have a personality of her own.

Arianne...bleh, nuther steryotypical elf, but at least not irritating like velanna. They were actually pretty fun companions for a DLC.

I still have to say that over all my biggest complaint for characters is not who or what the personalities were but more to the spec. I find it rather annoying that a character thrust upon you to be used by the PC has points already assigned in thier spec tree. It is my same complaint with Origins to Witch Hunt, the chatracters all seem to come preprogrammed by what i believe is someone's retarded nephew who needs a job. Give me a gimmick to respec the character you have forced upon me or suffer my verbal wrath.
Suffer i say suffer!!

Hm, I never tried it, but I thought the companions in Awakenings could use the respec manuals?
In Awakenings yes but Origins (requires a respec mod), Witch Hunt not that i know of, there is one for the Warden in WH but no one else. This would not be a problem for me if the characters were not specced in any way so that once i gained control of them i could respec them to fit in the party mechanic. Some people praise the dual weild warriors as capable tanks, but to me a dual weild warrior is about as usless as an archery specced warrior, both are a total waste of space, that is just my opinion, not to spark an argument. It is a single player experience after all and my experience should be different from yours. It is just a nit picky thing really but one that has annoyed me before i found the respec mod for Origins which added a level of play ability to the characters. Ever had Sten specced to be a proper sword and board? He does not do it any better than Allistair does, it is kind of neat though, but mostly it is a way to add a little difference to each play, this time Sten tanks and Allistair will 2H, or blow off Allistair completely.
Finn's spec was not to bad but i would have done a few things different. I feel that the spec as set down from on high must have come from someone who was apparently "high" when they set it, there were quite a few wasted talents as i remember it. I would have loved to recapture those wasted points and spec him in a proper fashion, but sadly it was not to be so i will complain mildly until this minor detail is addressed by the developers.

There is a mod where you can respec your companions in origins. I do it all the time.
I am rather annoyed though about Witch Hunt.

He could make for some hilarious party dialog if coupled with the right characters.
The elf was better.

Origins being preset didn't bother me because you got the characters at a low enough level to play them as you wish. I didn't mind leaving their specs as is, but it did annoy me a bit that Sten only got one spec while all the others got two.
As for Ariane as a DW warrior, by that point my Warden was so outrageously geared that it didn't matter if she had a tank or not. I was using my NPCs more to keep some of the adds off me while I shredded the elite+ types. Quite frankly, I think my rogue was tougher even in light armor.
But I agree about Finn's talents, I remember sitting there going "Really? You gave him that? Oi."
Sketch was better specced.
