Hi!

I had several problems:
- after 15-30 minutes the overall performance started to decrease
- stuttering
- bad fps in some ingame cutscenes (not the videos)
- lag and small freezes when opening ingame menues (inventory/journal etc.)
- lag when choosing dialogue options

My system is:
Phenom II 955, GA-MA785GT, 4GB RAM, Radeon 5850 (10.8 Catalyst), Windows 7 64 (up to date), Dragon Age with all DLC and Awakening version 1.04

What worked for me:
I got rid of all these problems by simply adding "-dx9" to my desktop shortcut of the Dragon Age Origins Launcher.

Would be good if a Bioware employee checked this to avoid similar problems  in Dragon Age 2 (just in case this hasn't been noticed).

regards
Frumy

There has been some unsubstantiated anecdotal discussion to the effect that the HD 5n00 generation is somehow crippled with regard to Dx9. I would suspect that owners of those video cards who continue using WindowsXP will tell you that it actually is Windows having the problems, not the Radeons after all.

Hi! If i ever decide to give DAO a go maybe i'll try that Dx9 thing but i'm not holding my breath. Gorath i have played some dx9 games and DAO is only one which is almost unplayable. But i think the performance should be greater in dx9 titles example i played prototype and fps hardly changed from going 4830 to 5770. Also crysis and the last remnant runs exactly the same. Anyway i find 5770 be disappointing and it will be last card i'm buying from ATI, though i don't know if it's drivers related or what but Nvidia will be my future upgrade.

Vista 64bit

HD 5770 1gb

4gb ddr2

c2q 9400 2.66ghz

Asus p5ql Se (integrated realtek)

The 5770 was not a High End card, was not intended to be, whereas your 4830 had been High End, although lower in that range than an HD 4850. A big difference is the memory bandwidth, of which the typical Mainline card (5770) has a 128 Bit memory system, and much narrower bandwidth as a result, when compared to the HD 4830's 256 Bit memory system.

I've never liked paying extra to get closer to the border at the top of Mainline, unless I was getting the better bandwidth. I thought that the HD 5670 would be adequate if I was really watching my budget, and not buying High End.

I have feeling that it wasn't an ¨upgrade¨ to go from 4830 to 5770 or not worth of 160e. What settings would you say 5770 could handle? rest of my comp is Core 2 quad 9400 2.6ghz, 4gb ddr2, Asus p5qle se with integrated realtek sound card.

I know this isn't helping, but after a while this happens to me as well. (I play the Xbox 360 version). So it might have to be looked into on all platforms.

Never let the advertising or the "newness" mislead you (nor the count of VRAMs attached, which are of little impoertance).  As long as you don't crank settings quite as high, the raw speed of the 5770 allows it to stay with the 4830, but not at higher resolutions, which really put the brakes on a Mainline card. It should have been able to run "mostly" all high image quality settings, but not with as many pixels as a 1600 by 1200 old (4:3) screen, or the equivalent with a wide screen.

The "700" in the card's name is for Mainline, while the "800" in the 4830's name is for High End.

Forgive my ignorance, but where exactly do I put in "-dx9"?

Also, with or without quotations?

Well i play games on 1280x768 or 1440x900 (max resolution) if they aren't too demanding. I wanted to buy 4870 1gb card when i upgraded my comp but they offered me 5770 and said it is as good as 4870 and little cheaper so i bought it. Damn i should picked nvid 260 or 275....I need time machine...

If you don't have a ready shortcut on your desktop, I suggest going into your daorigins install directory and grabbing the .exe file directly (click Copy, then on your Desktop, right-click and select Paste Shortcut).  Then right-click your Shortcut and select Properties (it's usually at the bottom of the list).  In the Target field, leave everything within quotes and just add -dx9 at the end with a space between the last quote and the dash.

It should look something like this:

"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\daorigins.exe" -dx9

Not sure why this bb puts double-slashes, but they should be single slashes.

Oh, and it worked for me.  At least it helped a lot.  The game is noticeably smoother again.  Before the patch, everything was as smooth as silk.  Then the patch made it jumpy, laggy, and opening up menus made me think the game was about to crash, it started jerking so much.  The -dx9 switch seems to have improved it tremendously.  It's not as smooth as pre-patch, but it's a lot better.

Don't know how that could improve performance but do you think it could give more fps ingame? Because somethings wrong on my game, on high settings, frame buffer off, AAx2, Resolution 1280x768 on lotharing i get 35-40 fps or is it memory leak or something?

AA is always an fps-eater. Try to disable it.

i have tried reducing my settings to medium, AA off, resolution to 1024x768 and it gave like 7 more fps which doesn't really help. I'm really picky about performance, i can't stand stuttering or low fps and i always choose 50-60 fps before graphics. In this game i get bad graphics, lots of stuttering, low fps.

If you're terrible with tech/geek stuff, write down your system specs on a piece of paper and bring it with you to a local computer shop. Ask a few questions. 99% of the time there's at least one tech who is a gamer.

KC'S COMPUTER SPECIFICATIONS ( and no, it's not O/C'd )
Operating System: Windows 7 64-Bit
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-T Deluxe Socket 775
Processor: Pentium Dual Core 3.0GHz
Memory: 4GB
Monitor:  19" CRT
Video Cards: BFG GForce 8800GTX 768MB OC x 2
Resolution:  1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz Refresh Rate
SLI: Enabled
PhysX: Enabled ( #2 Video Card runs PhysX, #1 Video Card does the rendering )
BIOS / Nvidia GPU Ex: Enabled ( For PhysX )

NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL SETTINGS
Anisoptric Filtering:  16x
AntiAliasing:  16xQ
AntiAliasing Gamma Correction:  On
AntiAliasing Mode:  Enhance Application Setting
AntiAliasing Transparency:  Off
Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames:  0
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic Sample Optimization:  Off
Texture Filtering - Negative LOD Bias:  Allow
Texture Filtering - Quality:  Quality
Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization:  On
Threaded Optimization:  Auto
Triple Buffering:  On
Vertical Synchronization:  Use Application Setting

If you don't use Nvidia chipset cards, I can't help much, but a lot of the above video settings are universal. I listed my specs for reference to help other users who have similair systems.

In regards to AntiAliasing being set to 16xQ instead of SLI 16xQ, SLI 16xQ does work, but it's not as smooth due to the other card being dedicated to PhysX, and setting PhysX to the CPU just slows down the system even more. If you have the system to do it, by all means go for it.

Ati ccc: AA, anisopthric filtering, Vsync are on application control,Trible buffering on, mipmap detail quality(change to anything else than lowest dosen't make difference), AA setting is normal and is not Adaptive AA.

It's weird when someone has 2.4ghz dualcore and gtx 260 and have fps issues people say that DAO is processor heavy game and that is not enough and when someone have quad core 2.8ghz and 9800gtx they say it's other way around and customer support just say to empty your temp folder so it's kinda hard to say wheres the problem.

There's a .txt log file in the PC version called DragonAge_1. I set it to read only. I ran into it while troubleshooting my video and load time issues. I definitely recommend opening that folder, deleting everything, then setting it to read only. I wouldn't recommend deleting the .txt file itself, though, and it's only 1KB when empty.

err... isnt this just another memory leak topic ? i rid of the problem on win7 by forcing app to load winxp sp2 compatibility .. simple as that.

the occasional lag while opening inventory stuff is due to the game running at 100% on dual core. add inferno spell while doing that just increases the lag. possibly the only way to solve that is to overclock it or get a quad ..

hello
my specs:
win 7 64
mobo: asus M4N72-E
4 GB ram DDR2
AMD Athlon II x 4 630 2.8 GHz
ATI 5750 1GB
Asus Xonar DX 7.1
LG W2261 VP 1920 x 1080 60 Hz
I was playing with settings on max and dealing with all sort of problems, crashes while using spells, slow loading times etc-etc.
After formating my HD I am playing DA unpacthed, everything is smoother now.
But I can't understand what is the problem, me my pc or the game?, My hardware drivers are current.

Firstly:  There were only two or three steps faster CPU when I bought mine (one was an AMD, the other two were intels) and only the GTX 480 was higher/faster than the 470 I bought, so I can hardly believe it's the system.

And secondly:  I thought it was a memory leak problem as well, but with no other changes than adding that -dx9 switch, the problem went away.  Not sure if it's a memory leak or not.

I messed around last night (again) and I went to the trouble of comparing screenshots with various graphic settings. Some of the settings I couldn't tell any difference at all, some I could, and in the end I improved the performance of the game, loading times, and with zero loss to graphics.

NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL SETTINGS
Setting Item: New value (Old Value)

Anisoptric Filtering: 8x (16x)
AntiAliasing Gamma Correction: On (No change)
AntiAliasing - Mode: Application-controlled* (Enhance the application setting)
AntiAliasing - Setting: N/A (16xQ)
AntiAliasing Transparency: Supersampling (Off)
Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames: 0 (No change)
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic Sample Optimization: On (No change)
Texture Filtering - Negative LOD Bias: Clamp (Allow)
Texture Filtering - Quality: Quality (No change)
Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization: On (No change)
Threaded Optimization: Auto (No change)
Triple Buffering: On (No change)
Vertical Synchronization: Use Application Setting (No change)
