Yes and i'm sure its best to just ****** off your already existing fanbase (One of the main things the fans constantly say in the "What I want for ME3 thread" is to be able to continue their romance and for their fave character to have a big role)

There was a "big" blowup before the release of ME2 as well. People were first furious about Wrex, then about Liara and the VS.

Guess what? The overwhelming majority of those people bought the game, and are still on these boards, discussing it.

For an even better example about the loltastic danger of pissing off your Internet fans, see the hoopla about the loss of PC exclusive features from COD4 MW in COD MW2. The fan fury dwarfed whatever little indignation the various Talimancers and Garrus fangirls might muster up, the IW website forums needed to be locked up etc. And most of those people STILL bought MW2.

You missed my point.
Bioware shouldn't focus on what the fans want out of fear they won't buy (most still will obviously) they should simply listen to one of the main thing the fans want, to continue their romance, especially since its the last chapter of the trilogy.

I'm sure casual newcomers can handle not having romances, its not like its a common must have in the shooter/RPG genre.

Heh, who knows? Not that we'll find out, since I'm fairly sure Bioware is not going to gyp them out of a major RPG feature just because some vocal Internet demands, from a few hundred people at best.

Very few non-Bioware RPGs contain romances, so its hardly a major feature.

Anyways Mox, what do you actually want? Would you prefer no new romances and continuation of the old ones or would you like to throw them away and have another repeat of the standard meet, chat, sex formula?

There's a difference between an uproar over huge sweeping changes to the architecture of a PC multiplayer, clearly designed to accommodate nickel-diming style businesses from consoles, and shedding tears of rage over virtual-relationships in a role playing game.

I'm sure peoples' mileage may vary.

The point still stands: many of the outraged ended up caving in and playing the game.

And why didn't they do so for ME2 (give the fans what they want), let the ME1 LIs and Wrex into the squad? We all know the reason: because it was too difficult and time consuming and too cost inefficient to implement. And there are far more variables floating in the air about who gets to join the squad, between ME2 and ME3. Everyone can die. Things have gotten harder, instead of easier, and they very deliberately made the entire squad mortal in ME2. When they knew what sort of problems that would cause them.

And of course people will get to continue their romances. Just perhaps not as squaddies.

Yes. But we are talking about Bioware RPGs here.

Lolwut? As if those two are the only choices. As if I ever suggested such. Don't even start!

Here's what I believe will happen:

The player can continue his/her romance, if the LI is still alive. However, if the LI is "mortal" (ie. not VS or Liara), their role won't be that of a full time squaddie. Some of them might get the LotSB deal, as happened with Liara. The "last hurrah", where you go on a mission with them for one last time. Further ones might be made available as DLC (inevitably, the less "popular" ones such as Jack and Jacob).

As it is, I'm not all that sure of even the guaranteed to be alive LIs to join in our ME3 squad... Liara has her new job, and Bioware has been awfully dismissive of the VS so far...

But there will be new LIs, and they will follow the old pattern. If they are well written, it's all good.

What do I want? Romances are not such an important feature for me, but I will be more than satisfied if the ongoing ones are concluded with content similar in scope and quality of writing to the LotSB. I don't think anyone wants scenes like the meet with Liara on Ilium or the Horizon BS... I wouldn't wish such even on Talimancers.

Sigh.

Who's "we"?

Bioware has already stated that THEY will make ME3 as another stand alone game.

...the Mass Effect community obviously

My feeling is that in Mass Effect 3 the romances should be a MAJOR focus of the story and not a subplot.

My Shepards 98% of time romanced Liara and I would love too see Harbinger capture Liara at the start and when Shepard goes to the Shadow Broker base she (since almost all my Shepards are female I will refer to Shepard as a female but idea works for male Shepard too) finds it destroyed and Liara MIA and Ferron tells Shepard that Liara is dead (because he thinks Liara is dead) but we learn that Liara is a Harbinger's prisoner and is slowly being indoctrinated while Shepard has an emotional breakdown and almost kills herself, but Kelly (or another squad mate stops Shepard) and when Shepard learns that Liara is alive and is a Harbinger's prisoner it becomes a question of how far is Shepard willing to go to save her and is Shepard willing to jeopardize an uneasy alliance between the various races to stop the Reapers in order to save Liara?

I think up the stakes and makes it a much more personal battle.

Saving the galaxy is great but there should be a personal interest for Shepard and more interesting story and better game when you're face with a hard question like:  are you willing to save the love of your life or a planet with billions of innocent lives?

The 'MJ or bus full of children' decision eh?  Now that does feel awfully cliche, but I think a watered down version would be more effective.  Something along the lines of the player learning that their infected LI cannot be reverted to their original self, but that they can become 'something' more than a Reaper slave.  Problem is, we are given no clue as to how retained the original personality might be, and their are even worries/hints from folks like Mordin that not much of any pre-indoctrination memories/traits remain in the LI's brain.
Then, the scenario comes up in which we are forced to pick between that infected LI or another squad mate, but not someone who has previously been romantically involved.  A friend or a lover and in the same moment, a miniscule chance at nothing or an obvious choice.  The judgments that could proceed this decision from the whole crew and even high-ranking sources like TIM would be astounding.  Most of the crew might never react to you in the same way if you were to pick the LI.
The twist?  You are led for a long while to believe that when you chose the LI, you have chosen incorrectly.  They are incurable, misreable, and even hostile toward you and the crew.  Then at some point there is a turn around and it becomes more like a case of amnesia, that is wearing away, and you are redeemed but only in their arms.  The crew and the remainder of your friends can only consider you selfish, except that you could speak to them and try and win their hearts back over time.
