It seems to me that for a tank, Shield Wall > Shield Defense in nearly every situation.  Shield Wall gives an armor bonus and damage penalty and can eventually make the character immune to Knockdown effects, which is awesome.  Shield Defense gives me a defense bonus and an attack penalty, which can be increased/reduced with other talents.  However, I never seem to notice the effects of Shield Defense in combat, and I definitely notice the effects of Shield Wall.  Under what situations would I want to use SD instead?

seems to me one obsoletes the other. Do I even need shield cover on my action bar anymore? They are both sustained ability. Shield wall seems to be the be all and end all, making the others obsolete. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Duck and Cover is correct. There is no situation where Shield Wall is inferior to Shield Defense or Shield Cover. It's a progression, not a trade off.

Cover has a much lower sustain cost than Wall, so if you're only facing archers then maybe?

We'd have to see some hard numbers to really evaluate the tradeoffs. The character's anti-missile rating is not displayed anywhere in the GUI that I've seen.

Two different purposes. If you are guaranteed to get hit by an enemy (Revenant) but you want to mitigate more damage you want to increase your Armor with Shield Wall.

If you are fighting a ton of Whites that have a very low chance of hitting, then you want to increase your Defense with Shield Defense so they will miss you more often.

Armor = Mitigate damage. Useful on monsters that will always hit you like Revs

Defense = Enemy attacks miss. Useful on monsters that will miss you a lot (whites and some yellows).

You don't :) not when you have Shield Wall.

By that point your stamina should be high enough that using it is not detrimental.

All I use is shield wall for my tanks, just overall better imo. We wont really know which is better until bioware/a random modder give us actual numbers for all of our talent. But I think immunity to knock down wins out over any defense bonus.

I don't even have Shield Defence on my bar anymore.

Oh I also want to mention that Shield Wall decreases your damage (this is not improved with other feats). Shield Defense decreases your "attack" making it harder to hit but this goes away when you get Shield Mastery

Actually, Shield Defense gives more defense than Shield Wall(found it out first-handed), and has no penalty once you have Shield Mastery and Expertise.

I tend to find it a good idea to tank most enemies with Shield Defense, and I only use Shield Wall against larger creatures such as Ogre and Dragon.
