I've read around here that people have had Mordin die while holding the line on the suicide mission. I find that quite odd because I left him on the line for two of my playthroughs and he hasn't died. I remember that Mordin mentioned that he didn't like holding the line but he would do it nonetheless if he had had too. So maybe this explains his proficiency (in my case) at holding it down

If he lives or dies also depends on what other squadmates are holding the line and if they are loyal.

Hmm that makes sense I left Grunt and Garrus with Mordin becuase I figured

A. Grunt is a Tank
B. Garrus held a building by himself for a long time
C.Mordin has done this sort of thing before because he served on Virmire.

Mordin wasn't on Virmire.

And he is the one most likely to die on the Hold the Line section, unless he is loyal and you have unloyal people there.

@OP: No, he doesn't.

But others can.

It seems to be completely random. He had survived on every playthrough and then for no reason at all (I took Samara and Miranda with me to the final battle as I have EVERY SINGLE TIME) he died on my infiltrator playthrough. Made no sense at all. I've since just started sending him away with the normandy crew so he's not involved in that scene at all.

Huh, that is weird.

Before I frequented this forum, I used to send Zaeed with the crew. I figured he could take care of himself and the recently thawed survivors better than anyone else.

Then I'd take Miri and Jacob/Jack/Garrus with me. I knew nothing about warp explosions or anything yet. They just had ammo powers I thought i could use and Miri had bonus weapon power...

No one died on line for my first 3 unaware suicide runs. Norma, Vet, Insanity in that order. Jacob, jack, garrus in that order.

Then i read here that there was some kind of math involved and have sent Mordin with the survivors ever since.

Just leave Zaeed and Grunt to hold the line and everyone will be fine.

Except that's exactly what I did and Mordin still wound up dead. Trust me, this issue has come up on these boards a thousand times over, Mordin some times dies for no reason whatsoever when you have him hold the line. I used to dismiss it cause it never happened to me, then it happened to me.

I just send Mordin back with the crew every single time. Aside from taking him with you to the last fight, that's the only way to guarantee his survival.

Getting everyone killed on hold the line is actually quite hard. In a nutshell, the more people are holding the line, the more chances there are that one of them is going to die protecting the others In fact there's a lovely thread stickied at the top of the quests section that reveals all of the math behind this. As others have said, a loyal Mordin is just as likely to live as an non loyal Grunt because that's how the kill order works, non loyal before loyal.

But Sarah, all of my folks are loyal to the cause, and they're all setup perfect! Unfortunately, the better everyone else gets the worse Mordin looks in the eyes of the great game engine god when it comes time to decide how the line is held. The more people there are to look after there, the more likely poor Mordin will take a bullet. If you take Jack and Kasumi with you to kill the end boss, well you've got big beefy assassins and sexy genetic test tube girls defending the guy, he'll probably live as the hold the line score will end up high. Even better if you send Tali back to the ship as now with the exception of Mordin, everyone can shoot well and they can spend more time looking out for the poor fellow.

But should you decide that Thane needs to do the escort, and you really want Miranda and Samara to help you with the end boss, you've just detrimentally left a weak line behind and the game will spit back the result that one person needs to die, and that person will probably be Mordin if no one is left who's not Loyal.

As I said earlier there is a lovely thread at the to of the Quests forum that pretty much gives you all of the stats and math to help you figure out who you can and can't take to have him HOLD THE LINE in style.

edit: As an afterthought, I'm fairly sure Mordin can even hold the line without his loyalty, but it may not be possible to do with a "perfect run" as you might have to kill off some of the weaker team members before reaching the end run to ensure a tough Hold the Line score.

So technically this is strategy, but it's probably the one strategy discussion I will redirect out of the strategy forum because all the details about the suicide mission are here.
