Salvation through destruction

Do the reapers destroy all intelligeng life in order to allow new intellignet life to evolve and seize resources? If a civilisation stays in power for long, the oldest ones receive a massive head start and can therefore limit or halt the development od other species. Therefore, by destroying those before us, they save us.

I just think that soverign gave the game away .... he said that he was the pinicle of evolution or his race was... and in that sense... i think like any religion, they want to convert as many people to reaperdom as possible...hell they even use a technique called "Indoctrination"....... prehaps the reapers are a metaphore for religion... who knows..but they simply want to cherry pick the best ,take it as their own, and convert everyone over to their way.
They want us to "accend", "transform", hell they are the very essence of most cult/religions.... just made in physical form.

Pretty sure sovereign meant that our salvation is being formed into a reaper. They see themselves as the pinnacle of evolution, and believe that if we're harvested and formed into one of them we should take that as an honour.
By the way, mark this thread for spoilers. This is just about as big on spoilers as you can get.

I agree. However, I think its all intelligent guesswork and speculation at the moment. Apart from a very short conversation with Soverign, a short vision from the beacons, the info from virgil on Ilos, we KNOW very little. The plot could yet take any number of twists and turns. We know what they do, but not necessarily why they do it, yet. Roll on ME3!!

Indeed. Being chosen for "reaperdom" is to be identified as the apex species in the Galaxy by all apex species that have come before us. Through their "help", they allow us to achieve immortality by converting the biological memory of millions into a near-invincible singularity (the reaper).
However, what's unclear about this metamorphosis is how all reapers end up sharing the same motives. If the source species is of such great importance, how can there not be individuality and division amongst the reapers? Wouldn't a Prothean reaper have a distinctly different perspective than a human one? Let alone one that's roamed the galaxy for millions of years? Hopefully the writing team will come up with a satisfactory explanation in ME3 rather than sidestepping the issue.

This was my theory as well on why the reapers do cycles of destruction. At each cycle, the reapers look to see if a species is worth their version of ascension by turning them into a reaper. They deemed humanity worthy this cycle. What an honor!
