Am I the only one that hates downloadable content?

I hate downloadable content for several reasons.

I spend too much on the game already, and hate to have to purchase Microsoft Points, or whatever else.

Also, once I finish the game, it's over. There is no going back. I'm  no longer used to the controls for the particular game, have forgotten parts of the storyline, and it's simply not as much fun to go back and play a partial game.

Downloadable content leaves me feeling cheated that I wasn't given the full game in the first place with my nearly $70 spent on the typical new release

Of course, much of this is rendered moot as I decided that I've been wasting far too much money on short-lived games, and have just subscribed to GameFly. I figure this will save me hundreds of dollars each year, and I won't miss the downloadable content at all.

I'm just wondering if anybody else feels the same way. It seems I read a lot of comments about enjoying these additions, but can't imagine that I'm the only one that finds them disagreeable for the reasons stated above.

First, downloadable content is cheap. It's about as much as a McRoyal w/cheese and won't leave you with heartburn.

Second, by you saying the game is overpriced doesn't make it so. How many game hours did you spend in Thedas?

I agree that DLC can often leave you wanting.

This.

Also, if you don't like it don't buy it, my man!  Make a statement with your dollars.  Just be aware that bijillions of us would pre-order the DLC if we could.  In fact, with BioPoints, we kind of do.

Edit:  I feel compelled to note "Unregistered user, inflamatory comments."

My only complaint is that I can't buy DLC with my credit card. I don't like buying BioWare Points. They can sell DLC for real money on the PS3, so I don't understand why they can't do the same on the PC. I wasn't able to purchase the Feast Day DLC because it's not possible to buy exactly the number of BioWare Points that I need to do so. I'm not giving them extra money by purchasing points that I don't need.

Otherwise, I like DLC.

That's not a problem with DLC, that's a problem with Microsoft. PS3 for example just removes the sum directly off your credit card / whatever.

Also, once I finish the game, it's over. There is no going back. I'm  no longer used to the controls for the particular game, have forgotten parts of the storyline, and it's simply not as much fun to go back and play a partial game.

That's not really a DLC issue but more of a player issue. If I don't touch Mega Man and come back after weeks / months, I won't be able to play as well as I did before because I just didn't play in that time.

Downloadable content leaves me feeling cheated that I wasn't given the full game in the first place with my nearly $70 spent on the typical new release

Your 70$ pays for the funding used when making the game, the additional DLC cost is to support the funding of the DLC you just purchased. The company doesn't have unlimited supplies that they can just let out free DLC and still make a profit.

Of course, much of this is rendered moot as I decided that I've been wasting far too much money on short-lived games, and have just subscribed to GameFly.

Decent service, hope you enjoy it. I personally would rather have the game on my shelf but that's just me.

When the downloadable content is deliberately held back from the initial release for the expressed interest of making money, then yes, I too feel cheated. However that's not always the case. Often downloadable content can be parts of the original game that simply could not be finished before content lock, and thus would have otherwise been left on the cutting room floor had it not been prepackaged as DLC. Shale from the original DA:O as far as I'm aware is a perfect example of this. That character wasn't finished in time to make it into the final phases of the vanilla game, and would have been left out entirely if not for the fact that they later went back and added her as DLC.

Frankly at the end of the day it's your choice to avoid DLC, just as it is my choice to buy it. Too each their own.

I don't hate it, but Im on the console and simply couldn't afford the wireless attachment for my Xbox 360, so I don't have any DLC at all.

I sincerely hope that Bioware decides to do something like Bethesda did with DLC on Fallout 3 and offer DLC packets in disk form. If they don't do that, I hope that they have a set planned amount of DLC and then do a package deal with DAO and all the available DLC

I never pay to download extra content, if they release a expansion I'll probably buy it, but if I want extra download able stuff I'll go to a mod site.

I'd say this is pretty rare among gamers who play games that benefit from DLCs.

No, but I think most of us have stopped fighting against it. While I love the traditional expansions of old, and hate that most DLC is a half-assed money grab; I've reconciled with the fact that it is here to stay.

I like DLC, what I dislike is when there are multiple pre-order DLCs from retailers and exclusive platform DLC.:pinched:

I dislike the very concept of DLC, I believe it's nothing more than a cash cow. I'd rather have a meaningful add-on (ToB), maybe with add-ins (Watcher's Keep from ToB). It also limits people, such as myself, who don't want to register simply to have something, as well as limiting those who prefer a physical disc. I'm sure I have a million other reasons and just can't think of them atm.

EDIT:  To be fair, if Bio packaged all the DA:O DLC and sold it as physical content, I might go for that.

I don't hate it, but when its poorly done its a slap in the face and provides the devs with a slippery slope they can slide down when it comes time to cut content to push a game out the door so they can add it later, and make you pay for it. I think in general Origins DLCs were pretty poor and i don't like ME2 enough to buy its, though the kasumi one looks pretty good.

I'd prefer to skip the € into BW points exchange step as well, but I'm aware of the benefits of using a kind of monopoly money currency. If you could get 160 points for the micro DLC, it would be fine anyway. That said, I'm stuck with some leftover points since I got a points card as a gift ..

It's okay, although I'd prefer if they released more stand-alone content like Leliana's Song and the Premium Modules for NWN, since I don't tend to replay games very frequently. And I'd also prefer if they pooled the resources from some of the shorter DLC together - produce less DLC overall but more content per each.

Console works fine, just need the wireless attachment...convince your government that we need another stimulus and I'll certainly go about stimulating your economy :)

I just don't see the benefits to using the BioWare Points.  Why not just let us use real money?  They're already doing the currency exchanges when you buy the points or when you purchase from the PS3, so what's the difference?

In the case of DA:O DLC, there's nothing that you can match up with the pranks and gifts (or the combo) to break even on your investment.  You always have useless points left over and there's no more DLC coming.  :(

No it is not cheap. I don't see how people can think $10 to $15 for two hours of content, or flying horses, or costume packs is cheap. Just do the math and compare it to what you paid for the actual game.

Whats more, some devs will abuse the practice, selling fans meaningless drivel. When it comes to quality, DLC is highly variable.

That said, some of it can also be quite good, and I'm finally breaking my DLC fast to download the latest ME2 content.

This!  I love DLC, and I think that the prices are quite reasonable, but having to buy 'points' is just flat out annoying.  You always wind up with points left over so you feel like you've been ripped off.
What is wrong with credit card purchases?

Eh, it was just a jab at the 360 for being the only modern console that didn't ship with built-in WiFi.  :P
