When I first bought DAO, I noticed the DLC and was immediately turned off by it. It seemed like a cheap**** way to milk customers of cash for content we should already have. However, after playing The Stone Prisoner, which was included in the CE of DAO I purchased, I was impressed.

Considering the cost of the DLC, 5-10 bucks, compared with daily mundane purchases, fastfood etc. its not such a bad deal. The fast food you just poop out the next day, the DLC lasts a lifetime:)

I purchased one, witch hunt. I didn't get the others because of user reviews. Suffice to say that witch hunt hasn't made me change my mind about DAO's DLCs. Stone prisoner is a special case, it's more of a bonus for first-time buyers than an actual DLC.

I rather liked Awakening though. It was shorter and less elaborate than Origins, of course, but it didn't feel like a half-assed cash grab like the DLCs. I would have liked another expansion the same size as Awakening really...

DLC is a great concept in two ways. 1) it allows the player to expand the breadth of the title's content. 2) it allows continued development of the franchise and revenue for the developer.

There is no conspiracy theory in supply and demand. There is a demand for DLC and so developers supply it.

No man you are not alone. Some games like ME2 DLC (Lair of the Shadowbroker) was really good but it definately felt like it should have been included in the final game.

I am not going to spend money for something that I should have already gotten dangit!

SO true, some of them seem more like pieces of the game that should have been included at purchase.

I'll PAY another couple of dollars, no big deal, but I think that I'd have liked to buy them as part of a collectors set. Extra goodies for the completion-ist... you know?

I bought the Lelianna's, Golem, and Witch Hunt DLC. They expand on the lore and narrative of the game. I did not buy feastday which in my mind is "horse armor" all over again. Seriously charging for items is never ok with me. Darkspawn being a what if scenario simply did not appeal to me at all but that is preference.

Bioware points for DLC is ridiculous. Seriously the Xbox casino model is not something you want to emulate. As a PC gamer I don't maintain some obscure gaming account measured in fantasy dollars. I know Xbox gamers do this which is probably why I will never be an Xbox customer. Trying to obfuscate the actual cost of your products is insulting and bothers me on a personal level. Plus no matter what points scheme used; when I checkout online with my credit card it is all for nothing since you will tell me in actual currency what the cost is before checkout. Why the charade? I understand you get to fool Xbox account users into not realising how much they spend but for PC it simply does not work since VISA/Mastercard/AMEX/Discover do not accept "points" currency.

Also when purchasing the 3 aforementioned DLC I had to go through the checkout process 3 times. Seriously it is 2010 why is there not a shopping cart where multiple DLC can be added and checked out once?

I have no illusions about DLC it is here to stay. The quality of the DLC is the real issue. I'm sure there are some business "suits" that push to fragment content into as little as possible. They want to monetize the smallest fragment of content in a nickle and dime structure. However this is not possible without people actually buying horse armor type content. So basically there will be good and bad DLC it is up to me as a consumer to decide wether I value that content enough to purchase. I'm sure there will be buyers remorse at times. But I know I won't be feeding the fluff virtual item purchase trends since those bother me the most.

Stone Prisoner is the only one I consider done well. I've gotten Warden's Keep and RtO, which proved to be little more than Monty Haul runs, and saw no point in purchasing the others. I don't care about gimmicks, playing as Darkspawn, or short dungeon-crawls which add little value to the original game.

Speaking of DLC, is it too late to get Amulet of the War Mage?

The only thing I don't like about downloadable content is that it is generally WAY too short and over hyped. Just the text they supply when you're buying it on Xbox Live is too much hype.

For example, the Soldier's Peak DLC.

"Two centuries ago, the Grey Wardens were expelled from Ferelden amidst a storm of blood and betrayal. Their fortress remains at remote Soldier's Peak, overgrown and reportedly haunted. Now comes a chance to unearth this lost chapter of Grey Warden history, to unravel the mystery behind its fall, and finally reclaim it for the order."

Now, I was so excited by this description I thought maybe, just maybe there would be some of the REALLY awesome DA:O lore and some of the signature Bioware flare involved in this DLC. I can't believe I was the only one who was disappointed when it took me only an hour to discover everything the DLC had to offer. Including the new abilities that it provided. The lore was sub-par and overall not very informative, unless they intend to play some of it into DA2.

Anyways, my biggest problem with DLC is its self hype and lack of living up to its own name. I wish that games would consider putting more time and effort into their DLC so that it leaves a richer experience to be had. Shale's DLC is a good example of something that is amazingly well done, her dialogue, the extra stuff they put into it. Everything was balanced and interesting. Making more Shale-esque quality DLC would make me an even more loyal Bioware fan.

I like DLC, let's them continue stories without needing to make entirely new games. It's largely unregulated quality wise though. *cough* witch hunt *cough* Still, I'd say on the whole it's worth it. I don't really see how buying DLC is even an issue unless you're either not working, or just don't like the principle. If you want to go that way, I've payed $20 to park my car for 4 hours. I think I can drop a fiver for a movie's worth of entertainment.

Witch Hunt, Golems, Leliana, and Darkspawn (although I knew it wasn't going to be any good) let me down. I think Soldier's Peak was proabably the only DLC that should've cost something--it was good because it didn't leave a cliff-hanger (depending how you left it), but I heard it was supposed to come with the game upon its release...

Anyways, why does Dragon Age have such cruddy DLC while Mass Effect has such awesome ones? I guess they treat the fantasy RPGers like crap lol.

I dislike DLC too, when you have to pay for it, one by one...I wished they just released all in one big pack to buy ala what Fallout 3 GOTY did (too late for me now...) Especially Lair of the shadow broker which seems actually game essential (reviews) and not a self-contained story...

Still great way to make money.

They could also spend time fixing some bugs, but that doesnt make any money does it EA Bioware...

ps do they have sales for DLC? Do they eventually drop in price or even become free? I'am new to this whole 'trend' in todays games...

I spend too much on the game already, and hate to have to purchase Microsoft Points, or whatever else.

Sounds like there is a very simple solution to your discontent. Dont buy any.
