Jory drew his blade, and tried backing out of something after having been told that there is no going back. Duncan was well justified in his actions, reprehensible as they may seem.
Incidentally, nobody survives becoming a Grey Warden. Some just take longer for the taint to kill. Like, say, 30 years.
Keeping the secret is the only way to fight the Blight. Why? Because no Grey Wardens means no way to end a Blight. If the people thought the Wardens were tainted and turned on them, then the Wardens would not be there to defeat the Archdemons, and the world would end. Period.

What? like the legion of the dead?
They join knowing they are going to die.

There is no reason why the Grey Warden can't/shouldn't operate under the same context.   If people knew being a Grey Warden was a death sentance, and what the sacrifice it actaully entailed, more respect and aid would be given. Even if individual bodies might be harder to attain. but again, right of conscription.   Its not like the Grey wardens are a volunteer based organization in the first place.

The wardog in the calling had the same massive taint. I would say that the human noble wardog is dying the whole time you are adventuring. That is what the books would lead you to believe anyway.

The Wardog in Ostigar was treated, so could be thought to have the same thing as the Grey Wardens.

That was the interesting thought I got from it as well, and I suspect attempts have been made before, just there is an acceptance amongst the order that is this the way it has to be, and thus not really seeing many other options.  Or that the need for secrecy/permanance for the solution demands that there not be a means to escape your fate as a Warden.

The fact Duncan will accept you into the Wardens no matter how good or evil you are is a clear marker for how they act... win at all costs.

Plus, Jory was an annoying coward.
