When Templars take their vows, is a life of chastity required? I was just wondering because that seems to be what was implied in Origins but in the preview for DA2, the article at IGN mentioned a Templar with a wife and I got a bit confused. Any repsonse would be appreciated, thanks!

Maybe the rules are different for the Templars who work in the Circle tower? Or prehaps this Templar was not good at following the rules?

Templars act subdued sometimes
But not always

Templars do not take a vow of chastity. The brothers and sisters that Leliana would take vows with were a separate branch of the Chantry. Most templars do not take wives as they are more committed to duty and getting married or raising a family would be difficult.

Edit: As for Circle templars, it would be highly inapporpiate. Like prisoners having relations with their guards or whatever.

The devs have said that chastity is not required, but many templars do choose duty over romantic/family life and it might well be encouraged.

But the Chantry seems to keep a pretty tight leash on their Templars, what with the Lyrium addiction and all. How could he hide a wife?

Yeah, the guy has a wife yet is still celibate. Imagine that.

I hear that, by the order of Grand Cleric, all lampposts in the courtyard of the Chantry compound of the royal palace in Denerim vanished one night. It's said they drew unwanted attention. Dunno what to make of it.

Seriously, though, I suspect templar vows involve chastity, and that "templar's wife" business probably has to do with the said templar having renounced his templar status or something. Or...maybe you're permitted to marry once you retire? The power of speculation is gorgeous.

I can't recall the name of the templar that was guarding the dock at the Circle Tower, but he seemed pretty interested in spending some quality alone time with Morrigan and Leliana, if the right dialogue choices were made.

But he also didn't seem like a very good templar, so that's probably a bad example.

I would say he is the worst templar in the entire game. He is not focused on his duty at all and just makes the stupidest comments. However, you are right in his comments on Morrigan and Leliana, with Morrigan's response being the better one, if I remember correctly.

Perhaps Lyrium has some physiological side effects besides addiction and addle-mindedness

This was something I was trying to find out since I first heard that Wesley, the templar in the demo, was married.

During an interview David Gaider answered the question "Can Templars marry?" with "Yes, they can, but they don't tend to."

Still I am trying to understand why the templar tormented in the tower didn't just ask to be transfered and get married if he suffered so much from his vows (in-game "He is resentful of his vows"). Maybe they aren't allowed to ask to be transfered? I have no idea.

Alistair never said he wasn't allowed to have sex, just that he'd never had the opportunity, and the lack of opportunity probably had something to do with the fact that he won't jump into the sack with someone unless he has feelings for them, because he mentions being propositioned by prostitutes in Denerim. He does say that he should be struck by lightening, according to the Chantry, after being with the warden, but that seemed more of a general Chantry view of sex without marriage than a templar thing.

The demon said that even he wasn't aware of what he wanted.

Really? Wow, that solves the problem. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

In a banter between Shale and Leliana. you can hear Leliana say that the Chantry doesn't prohibit two people from coming together in love (unless they're mages of course)

Actually David Gaider has said that mages will occassionally marry each other.

He's lyrium-addled.  Godwin tells you this in the Precious Metals quest.

Gosh, another interesting thread, I'm being spoiled today...

Now I thought Templars like revered mothers had to be celibate, perhaps they just have to be chaste which is why Ali still talks about lightening because having intercourse outside marriage would breach chastity...

Being married to a Templar must be difficult...

And yes, the lyrium thing is also interesting. Ali also says lyrium is not necessary to develop Templar powers but obviously discipline is, perhaps lyrium is used by many as a shortcut, but in the end a costly one over strict mental discipline?

And look how well THAT turned. It managed to ruin the mystique and appeal of one of the best bad guys in cinema.
