The story takes place long before ME1 ( 130 years or so, Shepard's parents havent even been born yet). You don't have to have played ME1 or 2 to understand this story. It's not fully true to the elements of Mass Effect due to me trying not to spend 4+ pages of explaining how mass effect fields work along with element zero and all the other aspects of the series (it's a dimmed down version, im writing this for a college class).  But I do go into detail about alot of the species and how everything works.
