Forgive the unintended innuendo, but I was wondering what difficulty setting people here will be using for their first playthrough.
For the past few years, I've always started every new game on higher than normal difficulty. Mostly because games these day are rather easy but more importantly because they are short. Obviously, Dragon Age isn't goin to be short, but with recent reviews complaining about the game's difficulty, I'm not so sure anymore.
I want the game to be challanging, but having to reload every 5 minutes breaks immersion for me (and makes me feel like a little girl). I'll still try hard first but if the game humbles me too much I'll switch to normal.
So, what difficulty setting will you be using for your first playthrough?
Hard, anyone?

I'll definitely be starting with normal difficulty. From what I've read, reviewers state that sometimes (on normal difficulty) the combat in one room is "challenging" and in the very next room it's so hard you have to tone it down to easy.
I usually have the determination to press on until I've won without backing down on difficulty.

Normal to start, but I'll probably switch difficulties throughout the game depending.

I plan to start on normal and if after the origin it is to easy just increase the hardness. I expect the difficulty will be a slider. If it is locked in from the start, well I'll just have to start over again. Do we know which why it will work? Slider or locked in from start?

It'll be normal on first.
simply because I don't have the patience to plan out what "might" be the better builds, party compositions, etc.
I'll play through first on normal as good, then on hard as evil
Makes me wonder if it's just 3, or more, difficulty levels tho!

Misleading title, man.

I'll do what I can to make it through without having to switch from normal to easy, but if I just can't see myself progressing, I'm not too proud to drop down. The next playthrough will be the same, but one difficulty higher, playing on hard, dropping down to normal if i have to.

I'll start on normal, at least until i've got a good feel for the gameplay and balance. I might raise the difficulty level after a while, but i'm primarily interested in the story and characters, and that doesn't change with the difficulty setting.

I normally start every game on the hardest difficulty available at the start. The reason for that is that I don't often play through a second time unless the game is really good. I have 1 trophy left to get for Uncharted and Dead Space only because the hardest difficulty was not unlocked on the first play through.
That said, with this game I'm definately expecting to play through more than once so may go one down from the hardest for the first.

Normal for me. Games should be fun, not work. I like a challenge but my impression is, that normal will be already one. I don't min/max my characters and put roleplay over efficiency, so normal seems like a good place to start. If it's too easy, I can still increase difficulty.

Normal for me. As previous posters have already mentioned, I find it is the best balance between having both a fun and challenging time.

Are any achievements/trophies difficulty based? I suppose that's the driving force behind me choosing a difficulty!

The innuendo made me chuckle. :-) But for, yes, Normal mode all the way to the through till the end. Maybe I will give Hard mode a try later.

I'm starting with Hard. And I'm going to do my best to re-try tough encounters quite a few times, adjusting tactics, rather than sliding down the difficulty. If it turns out to be way too insanely hard, well, I can always dial it back a notch if I have to. But Hard will be the default difficulty level for me. Full friendly fire damage and enemy AI are important elements of the challenge, I think.

I'd like to start on nightmare, but without knowing all the mechanics first I dont really think it's possible. Then again, not going nightmare first also adds some motivation for 2nd playthrough. So going with hard - and I hope "hard" means having to utilize all your abilities, position properly, predict what enemies will do and so on. Instead of the usual forcing you to reload untill you get lucky.
Problem is with pause type play the skillcap will be pretty low, there will be a fairly low limit to what you can do - after that its all about building characters(which will be alot of guessing without exact numbers on talents/spells).
I'm hopeful that bioware has made it challenging in the right ways though. Cant wait.

I wanted to say hard, because I'm a manly man, but I will probably end up with normal.

I really relish the opportunity to have to come up with clever strategies in order to defeat tactically-unique encounters. Digging deeper into the toolset of what the characters are capable of, and exercising my creativity. Being able to just pound my way through every battle using the same tried-and-true handful of abilities, with little fear of failure, is pretty boring. I think that anything below Hard mode will probably end up feeling far too simple.

Hard, full FF or bust.

I'm going for hard on the first playthrough since it contains 100% FF and full AI.
In most games this setting leads to the most interesting tactical battles.

I'm torn. i want full AI and full friendly fire, but I'm not sure if hard also increases other variables (ie. I don't want more foes, or foes hitting harder than pcs or any other such stuff.)

Might be interesting: From a German print magazine's test:
- in hard mode area of effect spells hit other group members for full damage (seems damage on group members of these spells is reduced on normal and easy), enemies do more damage, have higher resists and the effects of spells on the enemies (reducing their speed etc) have a shorter duration
- it seems that your chance of finding healing and mana potions in chests or among loot are higher the lower the difficulty. Difficulty does NOT SEEM to have an influence on the power of artifacts (magical weapons and armor) found
