I'm torn. i want full AI and full friendly fire, but I'm not sure if hard also increases other variables (ie. I don't want more foes, or foes hitting harder than pcs or any other such stuff.)

They hit as hard as the PC, not harder on hard. Hard is the level playing field.

Normal difficulty. I'm quite a bad tactician, also since I go for roleplay and not number-crunching stats. Plus, I play games to get through the story and gameplay and be entertained, not to be frustrated out of my wits.

I'll start out with hard and do my best to weather the difficulty. If it becomes hair-pullingly frustrating I can always dial down to normal later.

I always start out on easy first run through so I can see the story, then I crank it up :)

Hard mode because it doesn't mess with the numbers and I'll be able to complain to BioWare if it doesn't make me unable to beat it.

Ditto. I want to do this on hard because I like it rough!

Depends on how hard 'hard' is.  If it is Durlag's Tower hard, then I will probably play on normal. Posted Image   I would like full damage from friendly fire though... at least I think I would.

Can anyone tell me if there are difficulty-based achievements? Games that do have those typically require you go through the entire game without adjusting the difficulty to get the achievement. If that's the case, I'll likely be on normal to nab easy and normal on my first playthrough and go to hard from there.

If there are no achievements to be had, I'll be on easy. I've heard even normal is hard, so easy is fine for me. I really don't care about too much of a challenge as long as it doesn't seem like I'm just tearing through baddies like a God.

So far it might be the secret achievements for the console at least but otherwise no.

I go back and forth. I want to unlock AW so I can spec into it at level 7, so it really depends on where the quest to unlock it is in the game. If it's early on, I'll be starting on hard. If not I'll be starting on easy and rushing through till I get it...then will start over on hard :P

Forgive the unintended innuendo, but I was wondering what difficulty setting people here will be using for their first playthrough.

For the past few years, I've always started every new game on higher than normal difficulty. Mostly because games these day are rather easy but more importantly because they are short. Obviously, Dragon Age isn't goin to be short, but with recent reviews complaining about the game's difficulty, I'm not so sure anymore.

I want the game to be challanging, but having to reload every 5 minutes breaks immersion for me (and makes me feel like a little girl). I'll still try hard first but if the game humbles me too much I'll switch to normal.

So, what difficulty setting will you be using for your first playthrough?

I plan on starting on nightmare, we'll see how it goes.

Normal on the first playthrough. I'm going to play this game A LOT, so i might as well start on normal and change to hard on one of my many many subsequent playthroughs if it felt too easy

Or..wait. Now that i actually read all this...hard difficulty in DA:O is just friendly fire, isn't it?
In that case it would only require more tactic, which is fine.
The only thing i can't stand is, when games cheat to make it harder (e.g. enemies hit harder, better, faster, stronger..you get the point). If that's not the case i might as well do it the hard way

Depends on the AI, honestly. The AI and the level of control I'll have after I select what my characters do.

I'm not overly great at micro-management, though I have a good eye for seeing the whole battle happen and reacting to what goes on. The problem is... reacting.. meaning something -already- happened.. which is my fault with micro-managing :P I can't foresee a lot of things going on until I'm particularly seasoned with a game (as is anyone, yes?).

Either way, I'm hoping for a Hard start as I particularly like a challenge and have always played the D&D games on "Core rules" which means FF = ON.

I hardly ever go into Nightmare or 'harder than hard' difficulties for the simple fact that it becomes unbalancing and I really hate to see CC/Spells get resisted all the time making Offensive casters relatively unfit for war.

If the AI is as good and manageable as they say... I feel I'll have no problem with Hard.

No, hard is not just friendly fire. Read my post further up again. Hard is that friendly fire hits for FULL damage, enemies hit harder, have higher resists etc.

I always play games on normal the first time through, since it allows me to enjoy the story and learn everything without hours of frustrating reloading as one certain combat sequence destroys me over and over. Plus, normal gives the impression that that is how the developers intended the game to be.

After the first run, then I sometimes bump it up, depending on how enjoyable it was the first time. Some games are just too painful on hard to be worth the time and effort as they rely far too much on trial-and-error gameplay that demands you repeat every bit of combat over and over until you get through it flawlessly.

I can tell you one thing for sure - after playing Dragon Age Journeys on normal the whole way through the first time, that is one game I am not raising to hard. The Ogre and 2 Genlock Alphas battle at the end took me three tries as it was and even when I did finally beat it Martine was dead. I am just playing for unlocks now and will do the final run on easy.

lol...

I usually play hard on my first run through as well along with every other game i play.  There is nothing wrong with that B) more often then not you have to adapt to survive though to prevent from reloading over and over again.  For an example i'm playing an elven city warrior and i lean toward two-handed combat as a basic lifestyle preference, not that i shop for food at the local store with my claymore but you get the point.  Instead of my  normal preference, i've turned my warrior into an Heavy Archer then when the enemy approaches i close in for battle!  I usually employ crowd control and debilitating status effects.

Mind you this game can get very very boring since the battles will last a bit longer, i've spent around 3 hours for the first two main quests.  I don't recommend playing hard especially for the unlockable items, since you will be doing this 3 TIMES!!

I was planning to play on hard - Ive played these types of games my entire life... but then they say DA is harder than normal games in this genre and even normal is difficult. So its a little concerning! Perhaps Ill start on hard and turn it down to normal if it seems too difficult.

[Insert Innuendo Here]

I think devs have said that hard is what they thought of as the level of the BG series, so that's what I'll play. I usually start with easy, but I really wanna get the best out of it the first time.

Subsequent playthroughs...probably normal or easy. I'm more of a plot person than a "OH EM GEE THIS BATTLE IS SO EASY" person. ;P

It'll be the default/normal for me. Since the game is expected to be slightly more difficult than the norm, normal should be fine. I've rarely ramped up the difficulty before at least trying out the game but that's mainly because an easy game doesn't bother me as much as it would others. I don't need a harsh challenge where I repeat battles over and over to get them right; I just want to have fun exploring, developing my character(s), finding new items, and taking part in a good story. Difficult combat isn't something I need or want. That's not to say I can't get enjoyment out of a challenge, only that it isn't something I'm going to actively seek to add to the game from the outset.
