i always play on hard from the start, unless it is some complicated flight sim or something. I like challenges and never mind dying and re trying as i find that when i complete the game i have been challenged.

Most likely start on normal to get a feel absorb the story. After that I allways switch up to the hardest diffilculty after reading up a bit and prbly play as evil.

From the comments normal still seems quite challaging.

Once I get a feel for a game, I pick a difficulty setting, and never change it. Play easy, play normal, or play hard, but don't switch to normal for one fight and then switch back to hard because "This one ogre is really tough." That's not a legitimate "hard" completion. You're only cheating yourself, and that's sad.

The lowest I'll go is normal, and I'll go normal all the way through.

I will play on Normal. I don't want to grind this game on higher difficulties, as believe it or not, there are actually other games coming out i want to play i.e. Assassin's Creed 2.

I always start a game on normal, but sometimes I've gotten my head handed to me and if so, I'll try it on easy. I'm not trying to prove anything to myself about my gaming skills, just trying to have fun, and if it's not fun on normal, I'm not ashamed to do it easy. Posted Image

I am hard, yes. Why do you ask?

On a more serious note, yeah. I'm going to start on the hardest available difficulty. Why? Because I'm masochistic, that way.

Normal. I like a challenge, but I'm playing more for the storyline then the combat.

Normal seems to be difficult enough, and I don't find repeating battles over and over again as fun.

Normal on my first playthrough, ratcheting it up to Hard for the next couple (which will be as the other two classes), followed by Nightmare runs. Planning a total of 7 playthroughs (so I get all the origins and play every class at least twice).

Starting on normal. With an RPG that uses a new skill system, especially if you start playing on release day before the community's had a chance to dissect the mechanics, you can't really optimize your builds the first time through. If I play more than once, I would try to get an optimal party and crank up the difficulty the second time around.

For those that want to mix and match... e.g. 100% friendly fire but not harder hitting enemies... I imagine that's something that could be modded in easily enough.

Normal on the first playthrough. I'm going to play this game A LOT, so i might as well start on normal and change to hard on one of my many many subsequent playthroughs if it felt too easy

Or..wait. Now that i actually read all this...hard difficulty in DA:O is just friendly fire, isn't it?
In that case it would only require more tactic, which is fine.
The only thing i can't stand is, when games cheat to make it harder (e.g. enemies hit harder, better, faster, stronger..you get the point). If that's not the case i might as well do it the hard way

No, hard is not just friendly fire. Read my post further up again. Hard is that friendly fire hits for FULL damage, enemies hit harder, have higher resists etc.

It's a reverse situation, actually. On Hard, enemies do full damage. On normal and easy, enemy damage is reduced a little. The game was designed on hard, with adjustments for the other difficulty settings. Hard is everything at 100%, for both player and enemies - a perfectly level playing field. On normal and easy there's a bias towards the player, on nightmare there is a bias towards the enemy.

Oh, and I'll be starting on hard. I like level playing fields. No unfair advantages for me, like on normal or easy.

I *always* start on easy. Then, if I didn't have to reload too many times, I might play through on normal. Why? Because it's not fun for me to stare at the same fight for two days of playing. I usually leave games sit after that. I don't care if my completion is "legit" or what, just that I enjoyed the story and gameplay.

I go for normal, same reason as others have said. I don't want it to be too easy, but really I'm playing for the story more than anything.

I'll start on hard and take it down to normal if it's way too bonkers. I sort of wish FF was a separate slider, so I could lower the difficulty to normal without affecting FF damage.

Normal for my first play through, then go up from there. I like to enjoy the balance and it gives me a chance to figure out what I like and don't like.

I'm defintly going to start to game on normal, if I don't think it's a big enough challenge I'll change it up to hard, but I doubt that will happen.

I'm changing a little now, sadly. I've not feeling proud of myself lately when I beat the game in easy, so I'm starting to do it on normal or hard (well, that's an improvement). I'll Dragon Age probably at normal level, on my first playthrough (since they are saying even the easy level is hard...) and, depending on the reason of my next playthrough (see the story from another point of view or a more difficult game) I'll choose what to do.

Well since they have said its a slider, I'll start on normal and then maybe click it up to hard, but probably not. Though second play though will probably be on hard. Though if nomal feels to easy which isn't likly since I'm rusty as hell in this kind of RPG department, I'll click up.

Is there any incentive (achievements, loot?) to play on any of the difficulties? I know in Mass Effect you unlocked Hardcore and Nightmare and there were corresponding achievements.

I looked at http://www.xbox360ac...s/achievements/ and unless it is the secret achievements, I don't think so.

If that is the case, then I will play on "Normal" or "Hard". I like a challenge (hence no easy) but I don't like to struggle (hence no nightmare).

Normal here. Never was that much of a achievements **** to go for the hard from the get-go and, if anything else, I think my previous experiences with similar games (from BG and ID to NWN and Drakensang) should at least provide SOME background knowledge and skills.

Emphasis on some. ^_^

Hard seem to be ok difficulty. I'll check game mechanics and if AI don't appear to cheat with totally unfair resistances, health advantage and/or way too high damage, I might use Insane difficulty.

I was going to start on Normal, but I didn't realize until reading this thread that you only get full Friendly Fire with Hard and up. (If there is anything above that, nightmare I assume?)

So, I guess it's hard for me. I can't deal with not being able to accidentally kill my own party members if the option is available to me, or with only doing half or whatever damage in Friendly Fire. I guess I am just too indentured into the Pen and Paper rule-set. I won't tone it down until I get stuck for more than 90 minutes on a single combat, and even then, it'll probably take at least another 90 minutes after that before I finally cave and ramp it back. Unless I'm just gettin' totally tanked every time I re-load...

Normal for my 1st roll I think. I like a challenge, but not at the expense of enjoyment. I'm also quite sure I'll play several times, so will try the challenging stuff once I am familiar with the game dynamics. And from what I'm hearing, if I find it too easy on normal I can always ramp it up a notch...

I'm starting on Hard, I think most people get the impression Normal was already that hard by the Warden's Quest event, but do remember these guys were literally rushing through the game and if you try to complete as much as possible in an area, do as much sidequests as you can and use every aspect of the game you can use like me then Normal combat, especially boss fights, won't be that hard I guess.
