Which is hinted at by some events in recent DLC episodes,
It is? So my ideas aren't just the rambling thoughts of a made man...they actually have some bases in the story, Sweet vindication.
Which DLC exactly are you refering to?
Who invented the Reapers?

Legion finds our singular existence equally disturbing, so much so that he is distressed when he discovers that EDI is--contrary to 'her' nature--isolated from others of her kind, and offers to share with her a connection to the geth's network. Quite a compassionate and dare I (arrogantly) say "human" display of empathy.stewie1974 wrote...
However Legion refers to itself as "we"... and also "assumes control" ....of turrets at least... I just find it creapy that legion speaks so much like a reaper.... so i'm guessing collective consciousness is at least one thing the geth and reapers have in common.

What I mean is this: Humanity evolved to become the dominany species in the galaxy. They absorbed all others. They evolved into the first versions of the reapers and harvested the galaxy in the distant future. Having no "food" left they went back in time to begin again. Thus beginning the cycle of destruction.
Blah.
I am hoping for a simple explanation.
Protoreapers were the first race ever. Alone in the galaxy they evolved and seeded many world with their genetic material. They began using cybernetic implants for medical and practical purposes ala Borg in ST. The use of cybernetics grew until they simply "downloaded" the raw genetic material of entire protoreaper worlds into single "ships" - the precursors of the ships like sovereign. They drained the galaxy of resources, and was forced to hibernate to preserve resources. After many thousands of years life began to begin again and resources of the galaxy renewed itself, and they were able to come out of hibernation and "harvest" the galaxy again. The galactic races at the time fought back and caused them significant damage (perhaps the war that destroyed the reaper in ME2?) they realised that they couldnt afford such a conflict in future in order to "reap" the galaxy. So they created the relays and citadel etc to encourage galactic civilization to develop along predicatble paths and fled into dark space. Returning again and again they were able to easily "reap" the galaxy because their enemies were using their own technology with minimal losses. Unto the present day.
I know its not as "cool" an explanation as time travel paradoxes or whatever but its not as cliched either.

I mean...the Borg? Really?
Thing is the Reapers hibernate for so long, the whole cycles takes so long, and who knows how many cycles have transpired over the millennium...Something doesn't add up. I mean...If you evolved to such a point, why bother, what more could you possibly attain?
Well to add on to my theory I think they eventually come back to see the progress the new species have made in terms of technology...so they can add it to themselves. No matter how brilliant you are, new species can still improve upon your creations and you want to take advantage of that.
Also to see the new species created in hopes of maybe improving upon themselves. Since they are not entirley machines maybe they want to see where evolution has taken place and see if there are any advacement they want to encorporate.
And as time goes by they become more and more advance by taking in the new civilizations technologies and evolutionary advacement they naturally developed.
and now they are going to get beaten by a bunch of apes.
Its going to like the marvel 616 earth all over again. Here is this little word, no empire, no great technology beyond anything anyone has ever seen... yet are the most dangerous race in the galaxy that can even take out beings like galactus which every other race fears. They played this up one time and had a star empire decide to take over some "back water world" only to find out it was earth, which led to a background check, which then led them to soil their pants and run away in terror.

What if the reapers pick one race every time they "reap" to join them. Then they collect all the member of that species and created on new reaper. Like each reaper is from a time they judged the known universe and added one race to the collective giving that race the final form of evolution. Maybe they view themselves as some kind of preserver of worthy species or something...or maybe I need to go to bed.
Sovereign/Nazara claims that the Reapers were the original creators of the Citadel and the mass relays and when the other Reapers hibernate in the dark space (a starless space between galaxies where you can see in the Normandy's galaxy map),a single Reaper remains behind and stay hidden in the depths of the Milky Way space. This vanguard is like Sovereign who can lie in a dormant state for thousands of years so this must have something to do with the Citadel, the mass relays, the keepers and the unknown spacefaring race who fired a mass accelerator round at the Derelict Reaper...

Please, this guy couldn't build something that can kill a blue rodent let alone everything in the galaxy.

Definitely not the Protheans or any other races of the Milky Way galaxy.I bet it's a races of unknown antagonistic immortal deity-like creatures(super-advanced/high-tech beings possessing some form of telekinesis and telepathy) or even interdimensional beings from another galaxies/universes and it should be revealed in Mass Effect 3.
I included a background music to make this thread even more dramatic, evilish thread!

It seems pretty obvious that the Reapers were created by an organic species which they then turned on and annihilated, thus starting the cycles of extinction. It's a direct homage to Battlestar Galactica, The Matrix, The Terminator and so on. And they have plenty of examples in-game of "rogue V.I." or A.I going nuts and killing people. It's a reoccuring theme!
So asking "Who invented the Reapers?" is sort of a silly question: It doesn't matter who invented them because they're so long removed from the galaxy that it just doesn't matter anymore. There's been at least 740 cycles of extinction and the Reapers do their best to erase all evidence of sentient life after they're done harvesting the galaxy. After all, there are barely any Prothean ruins left and they were only wiped out during the last cycle!
