Very well done Peithelo. I especially like the colors you chose for the inner mats.

Can you literally buy `backing paper?` I assume you cant just use the paper that comes with the frame. I would appreciate any advice.

After some investigation I think the 'Bainbridge Artcare foam boards' are the good stuff.
I found these.

I'm feeling like a bit of a heathen now looking at all of your guys' excellent framing jobs...I'm forking out for non-reflective glass and a high quality frame but I wasn't planning on getting mats since there is a nifty little border around the artwork anyway. :S

Also a question for you pros - I'm placing my order now and my options for backing are MDF or foamcore. What is recommended?

Thanks guys :)

Not MDF!  Not unless you're planning on using some sort of barrier: MDF is really art-unfriendly.

Finally got round to hanging my Team litho; not great photos but should give some idea:

The litho - sorry about the flare of the spotlight but it was either that or lots of other annoying reflections.

In situ.  Whatever that means.

Advice to all those framing. Wood is better for framing than metal, because it's easier to seal the back with tape to prevent dust and bugs from getting behind the artwork.

ty for the link.
Also, using a frame, is it necessary to have paper backing the picture in the frame? Or just have the litho on it own?

Wooden frames don't exactly work well with sci-fi themed artwork. Depending on the frames of course. Some wooden frames can look magnificent, and I have seen few great wooden frames shown here, too.

I personally didn't want wooden frames because I felt that these works fit well with the feel of metal. To me the frames meaning is to support and be one with the artwork. I especially like these frames because their coloring greatly varies depending on the lighting and angle they are viewed. For example my The Team lithograph's frames coloring might resemble a very dark shade of blue, purple or cold gray, whereas my Tali lithograph's frames coloring changes between dark brown, black and slightly greenish gray.

I took better quality pictures of my previously framed lithographs so that those who are interested may see their frames better.

Paper between the litho and the foamboard? No.
If you don't want a mat, you should have this: Foamboard--->Litho--->Acrylic

Good to know. Luckily I'm using wood.

i know what you mean Peithelo, but wood is the way to go if you want to really preserve your lithos for ages to come. I am trying to find good coloured black wood, it's damn hard to find.

Thanks very much! I figured it was probably not a good idea, just based on the wiki explaination of what exactly MDF is, but I thought I'd ask some experts :)

By the way, your team litho looks terrific! And I spy with my little eye your Geralt head! Very awesome.

Thanks. :) And, yeah, there's quite a lot of games memorabilia congregating up there!  My other half isn't desperately keen, though overall I'm quite fortunate in that I pretty much have free rein to festoon the house with games lithographs!

I am finding framing to be a little frustrating, though: it seems every time I'm just about happy with what I've done, I find something I should've done better.  Putting barrier card in the frames isn't too much of a big deal, and buying decent UV-resistant glass is a bit of an expensive add-on, though having just discovered that some of my frames should ideally be less of a snug fit is a bummer.  Fortunately the Team frame isn't afflicted but my "'70s" Portal 2 litho is: then again I wanted to reframe it anyway so I could fit its certificate in there too, so I guess it all works out in the end...

Well I just recieved My Team back fro the shop..
I went for Black frame with a beveled edge and a double Mat. Black with Mercury Silver.
Kept the frame black to go with the rest of my Litho's, But this is the only one that will be matted

I went with the Mercury Silver to continue on with the Foil accents..

Hope You like..

They were custom framed at Michaels. I got them during a 60% off sale (though I think those "sales" are just marketing gimmicks 'cause they're almost always on.) I think I paid about $90 per custom frame. I went with the Masterpiece glass (which is the best glass that they offer) so that made them each a little more expensive.

I'll be extra nice...if you wait for the week after Thanksgiving and the yearly Anniversary week custom framing sales, you can usually get up to 70% off the frames at Michaels. They are still outrageously expensive, but it is your best bet if framing them there. Also, I've been able to get rain checks for the sales in the event that they did not have the frames or matting I requested in stock. I'm sure just about every store would do it...just to get you to come back and spend more money in general. It just might take them a month or two after the Christmas rush to restock the frames. Generally, though the 60% sales occur every 2-3 months, usually with the last day or two of the sale period getting an extra "5% off" coupon to make it 65% off when the sales didn't pick up like anticipated. It's the closest to 70% during the year you'd be able to get without the post-Thanksgiving/Anniversary sales. Check the coupons from the online store page and print them out and bring them in with you because usually the framing clerks know nothing about those deals and will run the regular 50% off if you don't bring in the coupon yourself.

Also, grill the clerks about how they will be treating your artwork. There are good stores...and then there are plenty of bad stores. If you get a bad store...they may chop up your artwork and think you wouldn't notice.

Furthermore, Michaels will only insure the artwork up to a value of 250 dollars.  If your art is worth more than that and they damage, destroy, lose, or the store goes up in flames, when you signed over the artwork for the framing materials to them, you sign that they only have to pay you up to 250 dollars for it.  Keep that in mind.  I typically keep my artwork and wait for the framing materials to come in to actual deliver and have them framed because of that.

Edit:  typo and added Insurance information

Wait, so do they only insure it up to $250 if you leave it their? Or is it if they screw it up reguardless?

They insure it up to 250 dollars if it is damaged, lost, destroyed etc, while in the care of the store (in storage or framing process). If you took it home and lost it...you've got to pay for it since they will write it down and log it in the computer that you took it home and that they need to call you when the materials are in.

Do things get destroyed very often at Michael's? I'm thinking of going there but I don't want to risk a really good lithograph to destruction.

Hmmm..having an issue. My Garrus litho came with the smallest wave in the top. I thought putting it in the frame would flatten it out over time but now it's turned basically into a much bigger one down the whole length. What should I do? =/ What do you guys think the problem might be?

Thanks x

Here's my The Team litho. The frame has a faux leather look & feel about it. It's double matted, with the big mat being made of suede and the small mat being made of the same material that the frame is made of.
