I keep forgetting to look at the combat logs.  Are the shadows and the shadow-bosses undead?  Do you need silver to overcome their damage reduction?  Can any of the them be turned or controlled? Can you do a planar bind on them?

I looked at the wiki, and it seems they are. From the lowest shadow up to the nightwalker.

Yup.  All Undead.  Shadows and Wraiths are a bit trickier than mummies and vampires (concealment), but that is where area effect spells come in handy.  A bit of sunshine or a mass cure or mass heal catches them where they lurk. 

Tip: Wall of Fire does double damage to undead.  Lay 2 of them in a corridor or gateway and not much gets through.
