Chronologically it goes Origins -> Awakening -> Witch Hunt
Note: Golems of Amgarrak should go between Awakening and Witch Hunt, if you have it.

Origins (With Warden's Keep, Return to Ostagar and Stone Prisoner played during it)
Awakening
Golems of Amgarrak
Witch Hunt
* Leliana's Song is a prequel to everything and standalone, I would only play it once you get very use to Origins and the character Leliana in Origins. It has no impact on your Warden's story.
** Darkspawn Chronicles is a 'what if' scenario and does not exist in the timeline, it's an aside on being the darkspawn for a change. IMPORTANT Only play it AFTER Origins is fully completed. It has no impact on your Warden's story.

Thank you. This post has been very helpfulQuicksilverk wrote...
If you're just starting off playing then you really should start with Origins. If you have the main campaign DLC such as Warden's Keep, Return to Ostagar and Stone Prisoner then play those during your run through. In timeline it goes:
Origins (With Warden's Keep, Return to Ostagar and Stone Prisoner played during it)
Awakening
Golems of Amgarrak
Witch Hunt

The Stone Prisoner is good to go right away, though.

Quicksilverk: Just out of curiosity - why should the Darkspawn Chronicles be played only when Origins is fully completed?

Well, it does tell an alternate version of the final combat.colorrush wrote...

Plus you'll have a better understanding of who the various people are that you'll encounter as well as a better appreciation for some of the inside jokes/references.

I would also recommend playing the Wardens Keep and specially Return to Ostagar quests at a very late point in the story because they are poorly balanced with the rest of the game. You basically can go right back to Ostagar after you just came from there and suddenly everything is covered in snow and you recieve very high Tier equipment which eliminates the fun of gradually building up your character and ofcourse messes with the difficulty balance in very drastic ways.
The Stone Prisoner is good to go right away, though.
i think you should actually do wardens keep right away because it gives you a good merchant of armor and weapons and do return to ostagar after your first quest is done because you get good equipment but it isnt as high tier as this guy says.
***My opinion for the quests is Save Redcliff (but go no further), Brecilian Forest, Circle Tower, Orzamar, Urn of Ashes. i think that gives it a bit of easy order, plus you can fight the high dragon to see if your strong enough to start the landsmeet.

I read somewhere that the Warden's decisions from Origins, Awakening and the DLCs would be included if you choose to import them. I do hope this is the case, I loved them all! Not too sure about the DLCs without the Warden though.DAOME2FTW wrote...
I didn't really bother getting Wardens keep, return to Ostagar, or golems of Amgarrak, reckon this will effect story in DA2? I doubt it will, but just wondering what you guys think.

Errrr......no... It goes Origins > GOA (Cos of the harvesters were introduced) > Awakening > Witch hunt. So only GOA was wrong.
I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but the chronological order of the games is:
Origins -> Awakening -> Golems of Amgarrak -> Witch Hunt
That's also the order you can import your characters down the story line too. The Harvester being in Golems has nothing to do with Awakening whatsoever.

I say this, because each of the DLC's after obtaining certain achievements, unlocks equipment for Origins and Awakening, which will be helpful.
Also, talking about whether something effects history or not, who knows. I think both Amgarrak and Witch Hunt introduces 2 new baddies, which WILL be fought against in DA2. If you watch the DA2 trailer, and slow it down when it goes through different scenes, you see a Golem of Angarrak and a Varterral as well.

Actually, if you don't mind being a little spoiled, play all the DLCs before playing the original game, not including Awakening though. After beating Origins and Awakening, then beat the Amgarrak and Witch Hunt again with your main character.

I disagree. The DLC items are fun, but are pretty game breaking balance wise. I would recomend playing the game at least once as intended.

Not in the slightest. No DLC is necessary to understand the story, they just add to it. I'd argue that Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep are really the only ones that are "must haves", with Return to Ostagar being quite a good purchase for its items alone. It really isn't that great in terms of gameplay, and the story elements can help with deciding what to do, but you don't exactly miss out if you don't have it.Sir Lemons wrote...
I played through Origins without any dlc, and just bought Awakening.. Am I doing it wrong? >_>
And I guess Witch Hunt and Leliana's Song really only appeal to fans of either character, Darkspawn Chronicles being an alternate story and GoA existing to give a greater challenge to the better players.

ive seen these posts dozens of times and its getting abit daft now, people know the chronology of the game, the chronology is when each expansion/DLC was released, so why does everyone keep asking what comes first when they konw damn well what comes first, sorry to rant but its mad, i folow the DA lore quite well and im not stupid enuf to ask daft questions
Well, your wrong there mate.
Lilianna's quest is set before Originas and the Darkspawn one is an alternate timeline set at exactly the same time as origins.
So well done to you for being so bloody clever, and stop having a go at people who would like a little clarity on these things. OK?
