I keep getting stuck in the first mission there is a destroyer and it says to have kaiden throw him...
I target him I think with the right button IIRC. But when I try it lately he keeps missing and then its a LONG cooldown. He should be smart and not miss, right? Also one time I got him to hit, but the fights seem too hard. I only have 2 stimpaks or whatever they are called in ME 1 and I keep dying in any case. I tried to break down some of my gear to omnigel but it didn't increase the number of times I was allowed to heal.
This is on normal difficulty.. Should I set it to casual? I have reloaded for 4 hours. Not fun!

You mean Eden Prime?
I never used Throw against that destroyer regardless of what the game told me. I don't really remember it telling me to use Throw either. Sit in cover as far away as possible and focus fire on the destroyer from the moment you see it.
I know it's not helping but this section shouldn't be difficult at all. Perhaps you're making it more difficult by trying to Throw it?
As for the healing, omnigel is used to open locks and repair the Mako. Only medigel can be used for healing, and it's collected separately.

On insanity, my ace in the hole defensive tactic is retreat. Don't be afraid to run away. Ever. Enemy barriers and shields can regenerate over time, but not armor.

This tactic works great throughout most of ME1 and ME2

Thanks I was trying to throw it and in doing so the teamate kaiden would be blocked by the cover..
So I was having to stick my neck out a little far. And getting shot up. I will try to take it down with guns.

I'm afraid this is not my game. The geth destroyer just has superior fire power unless I did something wrong with my skills or equipment. I could shoot him about 4 times from cover and then he would blow my shield and wound me to almost dead.
So then I stimpack and repeat. Then wait for stimpak cooldown. Took me from 5 to 2 stimpaks. And I killed him.
Guess what? Right behind him are 2 more geth destroyers
Unless someone can teach me to play this game I have bought ME1 and ME2 and I probably suck too bad to even play them
I am strafing out of cover is this wrong? Is there some way to just stick my gun and eyes out from behind?
Edit:
Just tried in casual and I cannot get past this. This game sucks as far as I am concerned!

I thought there was only one destroyer in that entire mission.
Anyway, if you are having trouble in the beginning, it's by far the easiest to use a soldier because the class skill lets you regen health. It's also worth mentioning that ME1 is much harder in the beginning than it is later on. Once you have Master Immunity (or Barrier) you just can't die.

I am a soldier. But I didn't regenerate anything until I lowered the difficulty to casual. Then it still sucked because that destroyer won't die.

Stay in cover as much as possible.
To "Stick your eyes out" when you're behind cover just Aim (right click on the mouse), that will pop your head and gun out so you can target and fire, when they start shooting back just let go of AIM and you'll be back behind cover.
Unfortunately cover in ME1 is nowhere near as good as in ME2 so sometimes you'll get shot through it but still, use cover as much as possible; it will save your life.

I figured that out but this particular destroyer is waiting too far to the side of the cover. I tried running to a different spot but from that point the destroyers friends could target me and it got much worse. Hmmmm... maybe I wasn't truly in cover?
Maybe I can find some youtube videos of people playing ME1... Although then the problem is that they would have all the high level powers.
Edit:
I reloaded fewer times against Firkraag!

Have you spent your skill points? You have several by that stage. Put a point in Soldier and you will regenerate health meaning you will go in at full health. What gun are you using? Pistols are actually the best in ME1, especially at the start, but any gun other than the sniper rifle should do the trick. You can pause the game, realign the target cursor and get Kaidan to throw from there.
ME1 is quite gear dependant. You are able to get a Stinger II pistol (I might be wrong about the name) from talking to some of the locals which is vastly superior to any gun you start with.

The hardest part of Mass Effect is the beginning, when your character is weak and your gear ineffective. Later on in the game, you won't even need (or want) to take cover. If you can make it through the harder parts in the beginning, the rest of the game should be easier.
Additionally, later on in the game you find armor modification items that grant health regeneration. This can help alleviate the stress on your medigel.

Are you using the cover properly?
Because it kinda sounds like you're trying to play a third person cover based shooter like a 1st person shooter.
You use cover by pressing up against it, which mostly prevents enemies from hitting you. Then you use the aim button to pop out of cover, fire some shots, then release aim button to get back into cover. There is no strafing in and out of cover when the cover is only waist high.

I found a spot on the ramp above the destroyer where I could shoot at him from cover. It took way less shots (it seemed) when he wasn't blasting me away before I could even line him up. I did have it in casual, but I think I am not that into combat I just want to see the story. I'll probably bump up to normal when I have some gear.
Thanks everyone for helping!

The only destroyer is on the Train, and I tend to have some trouble slamming into cover there. On my 360 version, Shepard won't get into shorter cover unless he/she is crouching first.
To peek out of cover, hold the Left Trigger on the 360 version.
Also, one of your problems may actually be that you're too close. Destroyers are much hardier than the rest of the Geth troops, and tend to hit harder. If you can see their health/Shield bar, then you're too close. It's actually possible to kill an enemy without ever seeing the info bar pop up on-screen. As an example, I regularly kill enemies that are actually tougher than the Destroyer (because they're designed to take on the Mako) without ever seeing their info bars. As long as you can see them and draw a bead on them, you can kill them.
Finally, invest a few points into the Soldier skill. The first level gives +3 Health Regen per second, which is actually a pretty decent clip. Higher levels increase the amount. With this skill, you basically sit in cover and heal instead of using Medi-gel. Medi-gel is faster, but if you're in cover, you often have the time to spare. Save your Medi-gel for emergencies.

The builds listed in the sticky don't take the soldier skill?? But they are designed for insanity and very skilled players. Maybe I need to make up my own build.

That's because at Level 20, you get access to a mission called UNC: Rogue VI. At the conclusion of this mission, you get to choose one of two specializations for your class. In the Soldier's case, this is either Commando or Shock Trooper. Once you complete the mission and make your choice, the Soldier skill disappears and is replaced with which ever one you chose. Any points you put into the Soldier skill transfer over when the change is made, though. So if you have 3 points in Soldier and take Commando, you'll have 3 points in Commando.

Also keep in mind that you get a sniper rifle. You can snipe that destroyer in the head from long range.

When I got to that point on my first game (started a few days ago) I was on an upper ledge and the destroyer was sitting there. I threw grenades at it until it died. Took 2-3 with the HE upgrade, IIRC.

with two to three points in pistol, except for sentinel, the player could take the destroyer out at range with ease, but remember to concern yourself with sniping the destroyer for this section,
after, one has to have to disable all of the the bombs where the time constraint becomes a minor factor.

i would absolutely agree with this. for some reason people think gold standard builds work for everyone. i play a vangaurd without medium armor or barrier, and i frickin love it. whatever works for you, do it. that sukcs your having trouble on casual too. id raise the aim assist in your options tab to high to give you more help too. id also recomend pausing the game by bringing up the power wheel more often to get a feel for your surroundings.
