Hi all,

As some of you know, I am slowly but surely plugging away at creating an Oriental Adventure to take players through with the help of the DM Client. I thought I would go ahead and show some of my progress here. I have been using Nytir's Oriental expansion to create Asian buildings. Here is a few pics of the family compounds that I have put together. The one thing I am struggling with is how to tint/color the walls. They won't be red, more likely a gray or cream color. But for now I have left it red. Also the roofs will get a color switch too but something close to the original gray.

The four different family compounds represent different social classes. I guess it is easy to guess which one the wealthy merchant lives in. Posted Image

You know there's a lot of brown stone available as well. Just a thought for compound walls, especially in towns and cities, where variety might be more apparent.

In rural areas, I'd bet the predominant wall color is grey, with wealthier Rural Manors being whitewashed or made another color altogether to make them stand out from the rest of the 'rustics' they lord it over.

These look pretty awesome. I'm actually making an oriental campaign myself, but I've been working on the setting and the systems scripting recently and not really got on to things like buildings etc. These definately add that oriental feel to things.

I reckon that is right. I have been watching a lot of Shaw Brothers movies for reference and it has been grey or white for the most part.

For those who are interested, I have been mostly referencing these two pages for building:

Thanks. I'll be putting them up on the vault eventually and you're welcome to use them if you like.

I am waiting a bit before putting them up so that I can put a lot of things up at once. But if you need them soon-ish, Send me a pm. :)

The thing that's interesting about these, other than you making them of course, is that they look like you could have some very tactical battles in them, especially in places like the large temple from your link.

They would be good for tactical battles. However, as you and I discussed in IRC, I would probably need to switch these to environmental objects in order to save some performance. And I think that env. objects don't block line of sight, for instance.

As for the temple, I had a look at the links and I didn't see one. Which one were you talking about? And thank you for reminding me about temples, I'll have to do some research and make some of them as well. They're a bit of a pain because they are very ornate and would need a lot of pieces.

There's a temple at the bottom of your first link, with a link to even more pictures of it.

If you load a compound as a separate area for a setpiece, you can keep everything. :-)

Ahhh.. I see it now. I took one look at it and quickly decided I would be crazy to attempt that. So I didn't look at it too carefully. I assumed it was a royal residence of some sort.

As for the separate area thing, that would be possible (but not in all csaes). There is another interesting thing about Nytir's set. The roofs are walkable (but the default is "off" in the properties). Posted Image

I've been toying with that whole 'walkable' roof concept. I still haven't quite figured out how I'm going to do it, but I have in mind a long and wacky rooftop chase scene and I think it's totally doable. I just have to figure out how to do the transitions and going from rooftop to ground and back. I think it'll be great fun, though I just don't quite have a complete handle on it's implementation.

Ninjas are on the rooftops! Get them!

It is really common in Asian films to see the heroes or bad guys slipping into the enemy's compound via the roof. Or just going there to eavesdrop or spy. So I feel I have to include it.

To be honest, I'm not too pleased with this whole walkmesh helper thing plus the camera gets a little nutty when inside the buildings in Nytir's set (including his prefab area). So I'm leaning towards not making the interiors walkable. This is also to keep the placeable count down as I'd have to decorate these interiors.

Instead I will probably use interiors like Kurogo's great tileset.

With all that in mind, I can probably try allowing the roofs to be walkable. However, the roof above the entraceways and gates would have to remain no walk.

Well, originally, I was thinking you'd have a rooftop attacker scene, where someone fires a crossbow (with a guranteed kill off of at least one person) and then pandemonium breaks out. You and your team go after him and fly into a house to give chase...

Transition to an area just like the one you were in, only now you're on the rooftops and that's your walkmesh terrain. You can't get to the ground without a transition (it's the only way in my mind that this could make sense) and now you're running across the rooftops of a small town, chasing after an assassin or a thief.

That's what I had in mind. I just figured it for a city series of chase scenes where you go from rooftop to ground and then back to the roofs to catch your quarry. Something a little different from your usual fare. Instead of a series of clashes and battles on the ground, you're pursuing your quarry across the rooftops of the city and one misstep could end your chase.

So question about your 2DAs...you wouldn't be using Pain's version would you? A lot of the BCK stuff conflicted with a lot of oter stuff on the vault and Pain fixed that. Using his version would make putting these up on the vault much more user friendly.

@ DNO: I've been following the Ladder Logic thread with some interest (Toolset forums) to see what comes of it regarding getting on/off roofs. I like your crossbow assassin idea. I may swipe that! :D

@ Kamalpoe: Yep. I always visit the vault before coming here and checked out those screenshots. I actually saw some stuff from him in Cygni 1 a while back that I liked. I think what he uses in those screenshots come from the vault.

@ Mokah: I actually fixed the 2da so it worked with SoZ myself before finding out about Pain's fixes. My fix did not include the "reserved ranges", I just got it to work as intended. However, before release, I will adopt Pain's stuff. I assume my prefabs would work with his 2da and erf. It better... :D

Them 'Painful' .2da's be fine ta' use an' should should do so w'out requirin' some poor sailor ta have to 're-fix' 'em fer using it with other stuff within their respective reservations ranges, bucko. All in all, they certain sure ta be as valued as a honest ta goodness Gin-u-Wine treasure map to Long John Silver's booty.

If'n ye likes the idea of an assassin (curses on them lilly liver'd backshooters!) crawlin' cross the mains'ls o' a town such as I relate, by all means, me hearty, feel free ta steal it. If'n a pyrate cain't steal on "Talk Lyke A Pyrate Day," then a true Pyrate he ain't.

Hi all.

Thought it time to post a screenie that caught my fancy. This is from the garden. To the left is the city fort and to the right is the riverside promenade:
