You don't need DA: Orgins to play DA2

You don't need Dragon Age Orgins saved files to play Dragon Age 2, now logically since you are playing a fresh new PC controlled guy/girl with a already created backstory you won't be running into Morrgian and rekindling the romance or running into your old companions and they will remember you.
Dragon Age 2 will be a story nearly based from a fresh new PC. Though you can import some changes that you made in Dragon Age Orgins it will effect the world around you or you can start with no saved files import
Pros and Cons. I am lead to believe because of Dragon Age Orgins: Awaking. The choices you made in DA:O will have little impact on Dragon Age 2. So it might have a minor difference but nothing massive.
Also while I am on the topic of Dragon Age. I must comment on the "Wheel" I understand Dragon Age Orgins looks better on the PC then on Xbox360 or PS3. But we used to have four or five choices in how we would respond and it detailed exactly what we would say
Not to knock Dragon Age 2 I am sure it will be a great game but now we have "Jokster", "Badass" and "serious" with a symbol of a mask to show what is what. Does anyone else feel like that just really isn't enough. That they rather not hear the PC voice but hear voices of other people more..if that makes any sense

It's a different hero/heroine with the story taking place primarily in a different land-- that said, what it primarily means is that if you don't import a game a "default" story state will be chosen, nothing more.

Or you could check into the many topics on this subject already.
In DAO you had a maximum of 6 options-- which tended to include questions bunched in with your choices. When there were tone-related lines (as in you were simply deciding how to say something, for roleplaying, as opposed to deciding what you're going to do), they were exactly the three tones you've mentioned there.
In DA2 you have a maximum of 10 options-- 5 on the main wheel with an option to flip to the investigate wheel where you can have 5 questions (and an option to flip back). So you have the three tones on the roleplaying hubs (where, again, you're just responding to someone) and on the action hubs (where you're determining what to do) you have up to 5 choices represented... and in either case can have 5 investigate options. The icons are there to offer some context to the paraphrases so you're not as frequently surprised by the voiced response.
Hope that makes sense. Ultimately the wheel isn't all that limiting, and just lays out the options a bit more clearly-- with icons for clarity where it's needed. And we also have more options than in DAO, without the need to do a manual investigate hub (NPC: "So what did you want to know?" PC: "I have no more questions." NPC: "Okay, now back to my original problem...")
