After watching the videos of Halo Reach single player on you tube. its clear Bungie knows how to make a dark and gritty game. Mass Effect 2 was suppose to be a dark and gritty game but it failed on many levels.  Do you think Mass Effect 2 is a dark game

Not terribly. But what darkness it has, it manages well, except for the whole "you're forced to work for terrorists" part.

as in the dark story that Bioware said it was going to be. there is nothing in ME 2 that reaches the level of darkness that Halo Reach has.

Repeating a word and defining it are two different things.

You lost all credibility at the word "halo"

I play RPGS and thus am superior to you FPS gamers

dark as in having your squad mates die or seeing people die in the game and the sense of knowing things are going to get bad as well knowing that what ever you try to do will end up in failure.

its not about rpg games vs FPS games its about the games being dark and the notion that Bioware said ME 2 would be a dark game

It could be as "dark" if you wanted it to be, just go with the "everyone dies" ending. Also its kind of sad that Shepard was ultimately unable to save anyone other than his/her own crew.

How are Bioware supposed to put that in Mass effect, unless you personally killed all your squad and Shepard for the "darkness"

Your squad can die in Mass Effect. In fact, unlike Halo, it actually means something.

In Halo, the deaths of anyone who is not named Master Chief are irrelevant.

Why yes, I imagine a game who's story is depending on 'all informed players know that the good guys ultimately will lose the planet at high cost' would have an edge on being dark and depressing.

Just finished Reach last night, and, yes, it is dark.

But, if you played through ME2 the first time cold, with no help and lost half your team mates and all of your crew (watching Kelly getting digested--dark) I think you would say ME2 was pretty dark.

Everyone here knows how to play it without losing anyone. In this case, not so dark. You tend to forget the feeling of failure and helplessness when you beat the game 4 or 5 times with no loses.

I think Mass Effect 2 was supposed to be a Space Opera, and Halo: reach was supposed to be a desperate last stand.

lol halo the covenant just glasses people and stuff + the flood just consume everything its just an organic problem there. + reach was destroyed its no big deal last stand stuff people die etc. halo began with a bang if you haven't been with the series since the first halo came out so basically its a retelling of how things happened

mass effect Collectors and reapers, they both destroy any opposition and turn you into their slaves or into one of "them"
they also have tech that's way more advanced
not to mention they took and destroyed way more colonies than the covenant ever did + the collectors were just one race while the covenant was a mix of aliens

in one game the big bad aliens shoot to kill

in the other they tortuture and use you for their experiments

sorry mass effect 2 is darker

Mass Effect 2 isn't dark at all really. The game is filled with camp.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending, on my first run everyone survived which was pretty surprising. So I never felt it was dark enough, so in my case I am leaning towards the OP in saying Reach had a darker feel but then again the planet was doomed from the start. Shepard was not as much, he did die once though.
