Not totally solo, because I'm going to play with the dog. But, I was wondering if assassin/duelist or assassin/ranger is the best build spec to run. Just wondering what people think works better. Also, I was planning on doing EVERYTHING in the game again, is this recommended or should I just run through the main story?

I have never used Ranger; always take Duelist as it benefits both ranged and melee combat.

Well, the Ranger build lets you call forth another ally for fights (wolf, bear, etc as you improve it). Might help handling hords of enemies.

Having Dog and a wolf together gives 2 sets of overwhelm once you get master ranger and they can take out a lot of enemies quite quickly.

The great bear is slower but is useful against elites and bosses, they also free you up to strike from distance with arrows and give a wider view of the battlefield.

All things to consider, I will certainly think about it. Hopefully have it figured out by the time it comes to speccing.

Okay, so as I'm playing through...I can't stay alive. I am dying all the time. I have put all of my points that I can into Dexterity, but anytime there is more than 2 enemies, I just can't do it. I'm not sure how any of you guys are doing this, and any help advice would be much appreciated.

Dex is great for Defense score, but armor is even better. If you have access to the Lil Song DLC armor, Felons Coat, or other tier 7 light armor, get STR to 20 and wear these. If you want to use heavier armor, bigger weapons, and perhaps a shield, increase your STR to 38+.

Also look for Dodge effect on items, as it stacks.

I have had success as a rogue soloing using a great deal of archery. Take rapid aim and develop to suppressing fire by lvl 6 (before fighting the ogre). Pick up the melee training as well to keep a rain of suppressing shots on bosses who close to melee.

The combination of rapid fire bow attacks and suppressing fire coupled with a high defense makes tough melee bosses, like the ogre in the Tower of Ishal, miss frequently. On mages, use shattering shot to knock them down, then either kill them quickly with archery or (against yellow and orange) keep them stunned or knocked down as much as possible and backstab away.

As strange as this sounds, after mages, concentrate on sword and shield enemies first when confronted with mobs. These are the ones who can keep you stunned and on the ground. They are the biggest threats. After lvl 8, you can reset every battle every 10 seconds with combat stealth. Things will begin to get easier.

Through most of the game you will use scattershot and bombs for mobs, although you will be pulling a few at a time whenever possible from mobs with archery. Pick up some dual weapon abilities, especially dual weapon sweep. Combat stealth is a must at lvl 8. I recommend ranger and bard as your specializations (ranger first obviously, then bard).

Finally, I have the Leliana's Song DLC. Battledress of the Provacateur at lvl 3 makes the early stuff doable. Prior to the battledress, I struggled mightily soloing as a rogue with any build in the early going. Get past the ogre and you will be ok, just watch the mobs of sword and board skeletons in the Werewolf lair and the templar mobs with a spellcaster in the mage's tower (hardest 2 fights in the game imo). (Buy nature salves for the spiders in the Deep Roads).

Starting as a dalish is essential to this strategy as you have access to scout's bows early on. Forgot to mention this point.

By the way, we were talking in another thread about rangers summoning multiple pets, and it is possible to have two pets up at once if you are going the ranger route it seems. I have not tried it in the main campaign (just Golems of Amg), but hit the summon for your first pet, and while it is summoning, hit the summon for another pet (For example, hit the button to summon the wolf, and while the summons in happening, hit the summons for the bear, and you can have the bear and the wolf at the same time). Not sure if it was intended or a glitch, but it seems to work, and might be of some help doing a nightmare run.

Not to rip on you man, or anything, but seeing as that's most likely a glitch, I imagine some people would be opposed to using that kinda stuff on a solo run. might just be me, though.

I found Bard/Ranger spec combo as a dalish archer to be among the most effective set-ups for me. The only part where I can say that I was really hurting was on the Fade segment because I couldn't use my pet. You really rely on your pet to tank for you, but most of the time it is more than enough. Be warned that Revenant fights are going to be downright horrible. The end battle of Lel's quest was not easy either due to the tight confines and inability to properly set-up or stage the fight. I suspect that your added use of Rabbit should prove extremely beneficial at this section. Also, beware of using Arrow of Slaying or Scattershot. While they are very powerful skills, they generate tremendous aggro that you will find hard to deal with given a general lack of microable tank.

Stealth is usually a good way to stop gaining unwanted attention.

Yeah, I definitely made it much harder on myself by forsaking stealth. that Marjolaine battle was nearly impossible. I mean, I did beat it, but it was more difficult than I thought possible.
