It really depends on the mission for me on ME 2 some missions i have a more suitable team than others. On ME 1 i generally stuck with Liara and Wrex because they slaughter everything including the final boss. ME 2 my all purpose team is Grunt and Kasumi i just find they compliment each other well Grunt is a walking tank that can take out groups and draw fire while Kasumi flanks and uses her flashbang grenades to pick out stray troops and Shadow Strike to take out Elite personel and YMIR Mechs.

I haven't played ME2, but I like to have Wrex in my squad in the first game. He's just so awesome...

On my first play through of ME 1, I used Garrus and Tali.
After I did a few other play throughs, I used Wrex, Liara and Ash as well. Never bothered with Kaiden.
But I agree with Moondoggie - for ME 2, it depends on where I'm going who I pick.

I have 4 ultimate wingmen that I take everytime. I just swap between depending on the mission I'm going.
Put them in order of awesomeness for me.
Grunt, Legion, Thane, and Garrus.
In ME1, no matter the mission, Wrex was always with me. He is just pure win.

Generally I change squadmates based on my Shepard, thus the wingman may vary. Nonethless my default canon Shepard luffles his Garrus.

I try to mix up my squadmates but it usually comes down to Garrus and Miranda. He's awesome and her skills and abilities are amazing.

Garrus in both ME1 and 2. Couldn't have done it without him.

Hmm, I don't really have any preferred characters - depends on the mission and background (for roleplaying reasons). I play in quite a solo fashion, augmented by whoever is in the team at the time.

Me, I loves having Legion with me. Wish he was able to be acquired earlier in the game. WIth Project Overlord DLC, both he and Tali are THE perfect squadies to have with you.
After Legion, me likes me some Tali.
That said, while I would always welcome Legion, I do have to pick my squadies based on what I THINK the new mission would require. First or second playthrough this turns out to be a roll of the dice whether I get it "right" or not, but later, I try to pick those who seem most appropriate based on skill/ability.

Garrus is most often my right wingman.
Substitutes for the left are generally: Miranda, Samara, Thane.

ME 1: Commander Samuel "Vimes" Shepard always took Liara and Tali to ground (Commander Sam is a Soldier, so I took the other two specialists available)
ME 2: Garrus is the man I trust for the job. Normal difficulty I took Tali with me (for old times' sake). On higher difficulties i favor Mordin. It's fun to burn armor.

From what I've experienced (at least at insanity level) do NOT take Grunt with you for the LotSB. I lose him from the very beginning of the final fight and he is GONE. Not sure if that is how it plays out with other teammates but I've been told it isn't true of all groupings.

One is NEVER too "mature" to not appreciate an excellent ass, real or virtual.

It depends on which character I'm playing. I always try to create a well-balanced team that has a mix of weaponry, tech and biotic abilities. Where possible, I always bring my romantic interest with me as well.
My teams ended up as follows:
1. Vanguard - Miranda/Zaeed (romanced Miranda)
2. Engineer - Jacob/Legion (romanced Jacob)
3. Infiltrator - Thane/Kasumi (romanced Thane. I call this one my 'infiltration team'! XD)
4. Sentinel - Jack/Grunt (romanced Jack. This is my 'All Renegade' team.)
5. Adept - Garrus/Mordin (romanced Garrus)
6. Soldier - Tali/Samara (romanced Tali).

In ME1 Kaidan was by my side in pretty much every playthrough, from the first mission to the end. I would usually use Ashley until after Virmire, and then Liara or Wrex (unless I was getting a teammate achievement) in the other slot.
In ME2 Miranda is my homegirl, and I switch up the second slot, with Kasumi being my favorite secondary, currently. I
Miranda.
