You can go into the suicide mission with a minimum of 8. Jacob, Miranda, Mordin, Garrus, and Jack will be five of those 8, but Grunt is one you can leave in the tank. You could also get Zaeed and Kasumi before Horizon, so you're at 7 before Horizon even takes place. You could even be at 8 before Horizon takes place. You can forego recruiting Samara, Tali, and Thane altogether by simply doing all the other sidequests available until the Illusive Man says it's time to go to the Collector Base.
As for the final cinematic fight, it only ever shows the first three people who died during the fight. If you had four die, such as Mordin, Tali, Kasumi and Jack, then it won't show Jack. But she's dead. Also, who pulls Shepard up onto the Normandy is on a priority list. Several other squadmates are going to pull Shepard up before it gets to Samara.

Oh, wow, a priority list! I always try to scrounge up who talks when, since it annoys me when I have a favorite squad member with me and someone else won't shut their mouth. Do we have any others?

Also, for some reason I can't deselect anyone but Zaeed and Grunt as being a part of my squad in the calculator.  Even though Grunt is always there.

This may or may not be the very last testing I need ever do for the suicide mission. One could hope. *exceptions to the HtL rule*

Okay, I understand. I guess I hadn't done enough sidequests during my game to "wait out" TIM. That's why I had Thane, Tali, and Samara "locked in" on the calculator. I've now got them unlocked in Version 1.10, and have added code that will display a message box if you don't have at least 8 team members selected.

Thanks to you and Liec for squaring me away on that.

Make sure you have the latest version of the calculator. I just posted Version 1.10. The version number is displayed in the lower-right corner (next to the Help button) on the calculator.

Regarding priority lists, I'm pretty sure that the second squadmate that you select for the FB fight is the one that Shepard saves with outstretched hand while sliding down the platform after destroying the human reaper. And the second squadmate you select for the Oculus fight is the one who says that the Oculus should be dead for good (or should not recover, etc.) after you finally destroy it.

The message box appears when I have 8 squadmates selected when heavy ship armor is unchecked. I have to select 9 to continue. :o

Thanks for that. Okay, a couple of new questions:
  • Should the calculator actually display a lone HTL team member as dying even if they're the only survivor (if everybody else dies)?
  • For your combinations of 2 and 3, do the rules/exceptions regarding the status of the Escort and FB squadmates apply (i.e., if 2 are supposed to die, only 1 will if only 1 other survives)?

Great. *heavy sigh*
I'm suspecting it's because Jack automatically dies if there's no armor, but I thought I was counting the team members before that happened. Let me take a look at it.

Yep, that's what it was. It's fixed in Version 1.11. Sorry about that.

This is a bit trivial, but apparently having 8 squadmates is what triggers the collector ship, not the SM itself, which means that a team of 8 that includes Legion is actually impossible =O

 I'm still getting that problem, but only for not selecting the Heavy Ship Armor.

I can't seem to make that happen with v1.11. Can you post or send me an image?

Wow, are you a professional beta tester? :D  You really seem to know how to break this program! Anyway, I'll try to take a look at it sometime tomorrow (10/4).

Aaaah, I know what happened. The new version won't download. I foolishly assumed that it would update an old version, and didn't uninstall .10 and tried running installation .11, but I get an error message about rolling back or something.

Fixed now. :D

Hmmm...All new versions of the calculator should just overwrite the old version without needing to uninstall. What version of Windows are you running? Can you tell me exactly what the message box displays while you're installing?

Actually, I took a quick look at it and it wasn't that big of a deal to change. Try Version 1.12.

I'm sorry! D: No, I can't, I don't remember what it said any more. But I can say that your new version linked tells me it's 1.11, instead of 1.12, for some reason. Both on the information on the calculator and on the installer. Unless I really missed something, again.

That's strange. I just downloaded it again using the above link and it's the correct version, and it overwrote my existing one just fine. Is anybody else having this problem? Maybe you can try clearing your browser cache (history). It's hard to tell without knowing more details of the problem. Sorry I can't help more.

I'm sorry, at this time there's no Mac version of the calculator. Somebody else asked that question earlier. I downloaded a package called MonoDevelop that's supposed to be able to port .NET applications to Mac and Linux, but I haven't really tried playing around with it yet. If I can get some time to play with it and figure out how to recompile the program for Macs, I'll definitely post it here.

1. If the game is gonna play it like they're dead, I think the calculator should, too. Showing them alive will just get people wondering why they can't keep playing the game 'cause one squadmate lived.

2. I've determined that the escort and FB squadmates have no effect on the HtL score in any way. All deaths will occur as stated regardless of whether you have surviving squadmates elsewhere. The only way you'll notice them have an effect is if 1 squadmate survives the defense. In that case, the only way that squadmate is going to be counted as alive is if another squadmate is also alive either from being the escort or a FB squadmate. But the HtL average is considered before this is taken into consideration.

Okay, Version 1.13 is now available.

I modified the code to display "Didn't make it" if a lone HTL team member is the sole survivor of the FB battle. This is to differentiate between team members who actually die during the HTL battle.

I also modified the code that calculates HTL deaths to include Pacifien's algorithm for combinations of 2 and 3 HTL team members.

Let me know how it looks.

Hi, I wrote the calculator. Can you provide a little more detail? Are you having trouble with the download? As far as I can tell the program should be virus-free. My system doesn't detect anything wrong with it, and nobody else has complained until now.
