I'm trying my first ever Renegade playthrough, and I have to say, it's pretty disappointing so far. Apparently, the only way to get Renegade points is to use Talent Points on the Intimidate skill, because the only way to get any Renegade Points is to use the Intimidate options. In a standard conversation, I take all the bottom options, and I get no Renegade points at all. Is there some secret I'm missing, or are Renegade points really that hard to get?

not really,

1) Kill the Feros colonist.

2) Kill the Rachni queen.

3) Keep disconnecting the Council.

4) Accept the mission to hunt down the crime lords.

5) Tell the fleet to ignore the Destiny Assention, and let the council die.

6) Kill a Monkey when looking for the data module.

7) Don't take Wrex to fist and kill him.

These are all off the top of my head.

Also once you get 5 points, you can use a glitch to max out Renegade on the Noveria mission. Same can be done for either Paragon or Renegade, actually.

I know about that, but you can't even use the option if you don't have 5 points in Intimidate. I'm not willing to spend any points in Charm or Intimidate, so that route is out.

My problem is basically that no conversation seems to give me any Renegade points, so I'm a lot further behind compared to the Paragon I've always played. I realize that not spending any points in Charm and Intimidate is going to keep me from getting some of the options, but it seems that I should be getting a lot more Renegade points than I've been getting.

Morality Guide - Spoilerrific, but it breaks it all down for you for what conversation points/actions give what sort of points.

I was looking at that, but it only tells you what conversation options give the points, not how to get to those conversation options. For example, I got no Renegade points from 'The Fan' because every time I chose what was supposed to be the Renegade option, my character told Conrad to get lost. I literally got nothing from it.

For Conrad, I think it's best to wait for the third conversation, then you'll have a "red" intimidate option (shoving your gun in his face).

The third conversation I just had went like this:

1. I initiate the conversation, he says something or other, and the conversation wheel pops up.

2. There is no red option, so I choose the bottom-right option.

3. My character slams Conrad into the wall and tells him to get lost. Conrad says something about me stealing fame and glory.

4. The conversation ends, Conrad disappears, and the quest is marked as complete in my journal. I receive no morality points (paragon or renegade), no credits, nothing.

That was the third conversation.

What background are you using for your Shep?

Don't forget Earthborn + Ruthless will give you the highest renegade points possible.

The only other problem I see is that you chose not  to add any skill points to intimidate.

There is a "glitch" you can use with Lorik on Noveria, let me see if I can find it.

Edit: Missed your post about knowing this already.

In ME1 those blue and red choices aren't paragon and renegade choices, they're charm and intimidate choices.

Some of the charm /blue responses may actually avoid you getting paragon points

(e.g getting a special asari license, instead of paragon points), and some of the intimidate / renegade choices may not actually get you renegade points.

Its only in ME2 that the red and blue choices are directly related to morality.
