Has anyone ever made it further in one playthrough?

As for my ME1 character level 59 though three different times I made it to level 60. The way to make it to level 60 is to first get to level 50 in the first play through then to go and play again with the same character and go to level 60 doing every quest there is. What you need to do to get there is to go for every metal scan, every single side quest. Even after you complete the metal scan side quest keep scanning for them. You still get experience points and money for scanning them. That's how I did it and yes I am on an Xbox myself.

The majority of my playthroughs are all around level 50-52, though a couple I managed to drag to 60... it was extremely time-consuming, so I only ever did it the twice.
Honestly, I have never seen anyone mention getting past level 58 on the most thorough of playthroughs. That means every single side quest, killing every single enemy, visiting every single planet, finding every single mineral, writing, turian marker, whatever. And getting out of the Mako to kill every enemy as well, as that boosts the experience gained.
And those reaching level 58 are quite rare, I think. Usually a thorough playthrough is going to get you to level 57. All the experience needed to get to level 57 is near the same as the experience you need to get from level 57 to level 60 as well.

Anyway, my very first run of ME1 was a weak one, principally because I had no idea what I was doing most of the time and I was relatively new to RPG's. I ended up at Level 40. But that character is now an overpowered Level 60 Soldier. I also made a subsequent playthrough as a female Adept where I managed to hit Level 55 at the end.

I managed 56 on Xbox on my most recent run, but I left a couple sidequests.
Same here. I started a new character on my second playthrough, and scratched my head for many a week as to why I couldnt make lvl 60 after completing 100% of the game (before release of BDts or PS). I then learned, from the good folk in these forums, that it could not be done in one. lol. Edit - Xbox360 at the time

But never past that. I understand there is a bonus you get after doing 2 playthroughs - 5 or 10% additional experience. But even with this achievement I could not manage to get to 57. According to what you are saying you need to get to 57 in order to be able to reach the cap level in only 2 playthroughs. Also, I did not know by using the Mako you receive less XP. How much you lose exactly in percentage?

Since ME2 came out and I've been doing re-runs for import, I've started consoling myself to 20 before leaving the Citadel so I get the Luna quest as soon as I leave (makes the most storytelling sense to me that way, plus that way I can build my specialization early). I end up skipping four to six levels that way, and still generally only top out at 58. Think I hit 59 exactly once.

I believe you're getting half the XP possible by killing something with the Mako.
40% in fact. Quite the hit, particularly late-game when you're actually tougher than it is and you're hurting your combat effectiveness by staying inside.

All in all, it's going to take three playthroughs. One to get to the initial level cap of 50. Another will get you as close to 60 as possible. The final one should be level 60. Some have said they've managed level 50 to 60 in one playthrough, but I cannot even begin to fathom how that is possible without using a cheat. Also, I believe you're getting half the XP possible by killing something with the Mako. Maybe more, I don't really remember.
Yeh I think you lose approx 50-60% XP staying in the mako. Also, recently I was just driving around on a planet and a Thresher Maw Spawned. It spawned in a crater like area, but this wasn't anywhere near any buildings, minerals or downed sattelites, just in the middle of nowhere so to speak. I dont know how many Maws you can get to spawn in areas like this on planets that have Thresher nests, for additional XP? However, I agree that once you have beaten the game first time, it will take you 2 playthroughs to acheive lvl 60. The general consensus seems to be anywhere between 56-58 in playthrough 1 (assuming game already beaten)

I was level 49 for my very first playthru completion. This is probably because I didn't realize that using the mako gives you less XP until about 1/2 way through the game. So, that stunted my XP a bit. Also, being paragon stunted my XP because I would talk through conflicts. I'm glad they did away with that sort of stunting in ME2.
Yeah, I was also 49 for basically the same reason. I used paragon to talk people out of some fights, and it cost me. That has always been something that bugged me with RPGs. You're punished for finding a solution that doesn't involve fighting. Fortunately, ME2 changed it so just finishing something grants XP and not the actual fighting.

On my last one one which I did a few weeks ago I managed to hit level 57 just as I beat the final boss.
