I've had several playthroughs of Mass Effect, and even with the experience bonuses and all the DLCs I can't make it past 57 with a new character.

Has anyone ever made it further in one playthrough?

I usually finish out 54-57 depending on how much I try to do. I usually do a speed run of main missions only, then a follow up of another full run to get all the exact play for a ME2 carryover.

The majority of my playthroughs are all around level 50-52, though a couple I managed to drag to 60... it was extremely time-consuming, so I only ever did it the twice.

How did you manage level 60? Are you on X-Box? I've got all the DLC for Mass Effect and I do every side quest and collect every scrap of experience possible and I still only end up at level 57 when playing on PC.

For my import to ME2 I have a Level 59 Infiltrator though I change class to an Adept after importing cause the Adept class beats all other classes hands down.

As for my ME1 character level 59 though three different times I made it to level 60. The way to make it to level 60 is to first get to level 50 in the first play through then to go and play again with the same character and go to level 60 doing every quest there is. What you need to do to get there is to go for every metal scan, every single side quest. Even after you complete the metal scan side quest keep scanning for them. You still get experience points and money for scanning them. That's how I did it and yes I am on an Xbox myself.

So you're not making a new character then. I wanted to know how high people got when the started a new character not a NG+.

[Edit: Deleted uncalled for accusation. Sorry. :(] You can only do that through two playthroughs.

Honestly, I have never seen anyone mention getting past level 58 on the most thorough of playthroughs. That means every single side quest, killing every single enemy, visiting every single planet, finding every single mineral, writing, turian marker, whatever. And getting out of the Mako to kill every enemy as well, as that boosts the experience gained.

And those reaching level 58 are quite rare, I think. Usually a thorough playthrough is going to get you to level 57. All the experience needed to get to level 57 is near the same as the experience you need to get from level 57 to level 60 as well.

Ok, to clarify, it was indeed with secondary play sessions on an existing Shep. I had written a big thing after my bit about dragging to 60, but I deleted it before posting because double-playthroughs had already been mentioned at that point and I didn't want to sound like I was trying to teach people how to suck eggs.

Sorry if anyone got the wrong end of the stick from that ^_^

I think it's been said multiple times before that the highest possible level you can reach in a single run is 57.

Anyway, my very first run of ME1 was a weak one, principally because I had no idea what I was doing most of the time and I was relatively new to RPG's. I ended up at Level 40. But that character is now an overpowered Level 60 Soldier. I also made a subsequent playthrough as a female Adept where I managed to hit Level 55 at the end.

Though I've not tried this route myself, apparently exploits can be used to get you there too, which while potentially wonky morally will save time on a second jaunt through the game.

My first was 45. I wasn't particularly interested in doing many more sidequests, and I sort of wanted to see how the save import system worked in ME2.

I was level 49 for my very first playthru completion. This is probably because I didn't realize that using the mako gives you less XP until about 1/2 way through the game. So, that stunted my XP a bit. Also, being paragon stunted my XP because I would talk through conflicts. I'm glad they did away with that sort of stunting in ME2.

As far as I know the game won't allow anyone on an Xbox to reach level 60 in one play through. I've tried getting past the level 50 barrier when starting with a fresh character. Unfortunately once you hit 50 as far as I've seen you aren't able to progress beyond it. Only way to go past 50 is to run through a second time. So unless there is a mod out there that busts that for the Xbox I dunno how to get to level 60 in one play through.

Same here.  I started a new character on my second playthrough, and scratched my head for many a week as to why I couldnt make lvl 60 after completing 100% of the game (before release of BDts or PS).  I then learned, from the good folk in these forums, that it could not be done in one. lol. Edit - Xbox360 at the time

So far I have done 4 playthroughs. First time I reached 49, then 52, 53 and finally 54. During the second one I was a bit more thorough and installe the first DLC, hence the 3-level advancement. Then by being a bit more thorough and installing Pinnacle Station I could reach level 54.

But never past that. I understand there is a bonus you get after doing 2 playthroughs - 5 or 10% additional experience. But even with this achievement I could not manage to get to 57. According to what you are saying you need to get to 57 in order to be able to reach the cap level in only 2 playthroughs. Also, I did not know by using the Mako you receive less XP. How much you lose exactly in percentage?

All in all, it's going to take three playthroughs. One to get to the initial level cap of 50. Another will get you as close to 60 as possible. The final one should be level 60. Some have said they've managed level 50 to 60 in one playthrough, but I cannot even begin to fathom how that is possible without using a cheat. Also, I believe you're getting half the XP possible by killing something with the Mako. Maybe more, I don't really remember.

With Pinnacle, BDtS, and the various XP-gain bonuses from completion achievements, plus getting out of the Mako, I usually hit 57-58 on a completionist run and 54-56 on a normal run (note that for me, the difference between "completionist" and "normal" is UNC collection quests, full stop - the only time I don't do every single story/combat sidequest is on a main plot speed run. Well, unless I'm playing on Insanity, in which case I skip Pinnacle. But I seldom play on Insanity in ME1, immunity spam isn't hard, it's just boring).

Since ME2 came out and I've been doing re-runs for import, I've started consoling myself to 20 before leaving the Citadel so I get the Luna quest as soon as I leave (makes the most storytelling sense to me that way, plus that way I can build my specialization early). I end up skipping four to six levels that way, and still generally only top out at 58. Think I hit 59 exactly once.

40% in fact. Quite the hit, particularly late-game when you're actually tougher than it is and you're hurting your combat effectiveness by staying inside.

Yeh I think you lose approx 50-60% XP staying in the mako. Also, recently I was just driving around on a planet and a Thresher Maw Spawned.  It spawned in a crater like area, but this wasn't anywhere near any buildings, minerals or downed sattelites, just in the middle of nowhere so to speak.  I dont know how many Maws you can get to spawn in areas like this on planets that have Thresher nests, for additional XP? However, I agree that once you have beaten the game first time, it will take you 2 playthroughs to acheive lvl 60. The general consensus seems to be anywhere between 56-58 in playthrough 1 (assuming game already beaten)

Yeah, I was also 49 for basically the same reason.  I used paragon to talk people out of some fights, and it cost me.  That has always been something that bugged me with RPGs.  You're punished for finding a solution that doesn't involve fighting.  Fortunately, ME2 changed it so just finishing something grants XP and not the actual fighting.

On my very first play-through I hit the level 50 cap, and I actually managed to get to level 60 with my second go around. I got every bit of exp I could, killed everyone I could, didnt kill anything in the Mako. Oh, and I was playing on X-box, so I can attest to the fact that it is possable to get to 60 in two.

On my last one one which I did a few weeks ago I managed to hit level 57 just as I beat the final boss.

I have 3 complete playthroughs with 3 different characters. I acheived lvl 50 with the 1st two platthroughs and lvl 54 with the 3rd. I imported the 2 50's into ME2 and I have done 2 playthroughs with #3; she is currently a lvl 60, acheived during the 2cd playthrough. I am now running her thru again on insanity.
