Is there no software surround option for Mass Effect 1? I use a Radeon HD 5670 and get surround sound in Mass Effect 2 by default. But I only get stereo from Mass Effect (even though my receiver reports 7.1 audio in both instances).

My system is the following:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
4.00 GB RAM
Intel® Core™ i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz
ATI Radeon HD 5670
MSI P55M-GD41 Mainboard

Do you use the Radeon as a sound card? Otherwise post your sound card info. To answer your question, they really messed up big time with the sound in the PC port. You need a Soundblaster/X-Fi sound card.

How are you getting sounds to the receiver? HDMI, TOSLink, or 3.5mm jacks?

If you use Vista, then you are stuck. ME1 sound engine is marvelous with X-Fi and EAX on, but on Vista even that requires workarounds to work.

I used the Radeon as my soundcard.  It worked just fine with ME2 so I thought I'd have no issues with ME1.

Any particular recomendation or will any Soundblaster/X-Fi sound card do the trick?

I'm passing audio to my receiver via HDMI.
