I created a Sentinel and took Reave as my bonus power. I was doing Mordin's Recruitment and, I swear I never finished a mission so fast. I was amazed..

Does energy drain just work on shields or does it also work on barriers?

Shields and synthetic health, not barriers.

A nice build for an Assault Sentinel:
Throw Rank 3
Warp Rank 3
Tech Armor Rank 4 (Assault)
Cryo Blast Rank 2
Passive Talent Rank 4 (Raider)
Warp Ammo Rank 4 (Heavy)
Combine that with either Eviscerator or GPS and you got a biest!

I picked reave as well the first time around, especially so I could focus more on using Cryo Blast instead of Throw/Warp. I actually found a lot of uses out of it since I always used it to set up my flanking.

My insanity sentinel was almost exactly like that. It's a seriously kickass build, and I actually think it was more powerful than any other class (though I haven't done a serious vanguard run). Area Drain is incredibly useful against shielded enemies, even mroe so against geth. Pick shotgun for your bonus weapon and I like to bring either Jacob, Grunt or Zaeed with me to get squad incendiary or disruptor.
Assault Sentinel has the tools to defeat pretty much any enemy. You'll definitely have fun with this build.

Hmm.. I'd take 1 rank out of cryo and warp, and evolve to heavy throw or throw field. The extra power or area effect in throw just seems more important than the 20 damage in warp and the 1 second in cryo combined.

Basically here's my setup on my Sentinel and I got through Insanity without a problem. Had a bit of a "hiccup" with the Colossus on Haestrom but that was my fault because my wife distracted me and of course, that half second you arent paying attention on Insanity is all they need to turn you inside out...Anyway, here's my own personal setup with my Sentinel:
Throw: Rank 4 (Throw Field because as someone else already mentioned, it's nice against swarms of Husk and has a low recharge)
Tech Armor: Rank 4 (Power Armor) because I like the damage boost I get from it while it's active
Overload: Rank 4 (Heavy Overload)
Cryo Blast: Rank 1 (was my last point so I had to put it somewhere lol)
Defender: Rank 4 (Guardian) Love going Guardian because it gives you a 30% cooldown reduction. Combine that with the Tech Cooldown bonus and the Archon Visor and that's a 55% cooldown. Translation; that puts Overload on a 2.7 second cooldown (roughly)
Reave: Rank 4 (Heavy Reave) Again, combine the 20% biotic cooldown with the Guardian's 30% and the Archon Visor and you have a Heavy Reave that can hit a target every 2.7 seconds which can, and usually will as it has me a few times, save your arse. Plus, you can't beat the fact that it stops a target dead in it's tracks when it lands, setting them up perfectly for you to pop a few rounds in them before they die. That, and also the fact that unlike Warp, Reave is an "instant cast" like Overload which means there's very little if any actual "aiming" involved with it. Just cast it and get your arse back behind cover.
I was going to take Energy Drain instead of Reave but I realized that I was playing a Sentinel and the moment my shields were down, I was just recasting Tech Armor anyway, it kind of lost it's appeal to me. 6 second cooldown (after Guardian and Tech Cooldown upgrades) from 12 is pretty damn impressive so there were very few (can count on one hand) instances where I was caught in between casting.

The archon visor doesn't work, other headgear is better unless you just like the look of it.

Hmm...Nice to know that lol...I was unaware that it was "broken". Still, that's a 50% cooldown, and yes, I do like the look of it lol. I'd use the other goggles but if I wanted to look like Sam Fisher, I'd play splinter cell
