When the shriek ambush first happened at camp, many people had no tactics set up (because I never had them in the party), and Sten didn't even have equipment. I think my PC and Leliana were the two people left standing, with me fleeing in circles with a tiny bit of health while a shriek chased me and Lel took pot shots.

Good times.

ROFL Literally sitting here eating popcorn reading this and laughing my ass off.

My only real facepalm moment was when I accidentally turned the circle tower over to the templars and then expected in Redcliffe to get the circle convo to save both connor and Isolde.  AListair made me cry that game...I could have sworn I had saved the mages...still not sure what I did but it took forever to kill Uldred that playthrough.  Maybe Irving died even though I tried to use that stupid litany.

I've had quite a few facepalm moments:

*Didn't know I could unlock Sten's cage (either playing as a rogue or having Leliana do it)

*Didn't know about the tab key

*Didn't know that all I had to do to keep Leliana from attacking the target as I do even if I changed targets was to change it in her tatics (I cussed that poor woman relentlessly my first couple of playthrus).

*Didn't realize that coirsion was a useful skill

*Didn't know that I had to have at least one skill point or whatever you call it in stealing for that dude to show up in Denerim

*Didn't know you could actually heal the NPC's in the battle at Redcliff (actually learned that one today! lol)

*Didn't really believe that Alistair or I would really die in the end if I didn't do the DR.  I went in my first playthru head over heels in love with him and couldn't stand the idea of that uhh witch touching him so I told her no deal.  I honestly believed Riodan would take the final blow.....even after he did that dumb bunny move off the top of the tower I kept hoping he would miraculously show up there in the end and take that final blow (hey it happens in soap operas...why not in a video game??? :P )  I just sat there stunned and devistated when my darlin' died.

*Didn't realize you could flirt with Bann Teagan until about my 4th or 5th time thru.  When I finally did figure it out, I wasted God only knows how many hours trying to figure out how to recruit him and hunny up with him instead (hey, I'm uhh well...45 yrs old and I feel like I'm robbing the cradle with Alistair....Bann Teagan seems older. lol)

*Didn't know H would put everyone on hold and it wasn't until after about an hour of trying to figuring out how to do that dang bridge in the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest that I finally asked my son how to do it.

*Didn't know that you could form romantic relationships in the game until Alistair kissed me.  The only reason I even started playing this game is because I saw my son playing and saw that you could play as a girl.  I used to be a huge Tomb Raider fan.  When he finally asked me to his tent, I wasn't expecting visuals....I looked at my husband and said "OMG....I just got laid."  He just about hit the floor.

All in all, I am hooked on this game.  It's way better than Tomb Raider in a lot of ways....There is just so much you can do in it....It's always different no matter how you play and I'm always finding something new each time I play.

An update on the *facepalm* moment in my original post:

After my High Dragon equipment fail, I *DID* manage to remember to equip Sten with Yusaris for the Archdemon fight. Yay me! :wizard: Of course I have no way of knowing how much difference it made since he and I took on Archie in a pincer formation, with Sten tanking in front and my CE Rogue getting her hits in from the back, side and underneath. Tough to check on your mate's damage points with an entire Archdemon between you. But at least I can say I used the damn thing after picking it up when I was about 1/4 or less of the way through this playthrough. . .

@Eledhwen

I don't think the Archdemon is classed as either darkspawn or dragon. Yusaris would be no different then a normal blade on him.

I could be wrong though.

OMG, you almost made me do another major facepalm, but fortunately you are mistaken: According to the Dragon Age Wiki, "Archdemons are the Old Gods manifested in the form of powerful and terrifying dragons and tainted by darkspawn."

So darkspawn, not really; but a dragon, yes.

Though usually considered to be male, no? Not sure how that works. Anyway. =]

I hate to this bit, according to the wiki under the Archdemon strategy page it says

"The Archdemon is not classed as either a dragon or a darkspawn, therefore it is immune to the bonuses from weapons against dragons, e.g. Yusaris and bonuses against darkspawn, e.g. the Silverite Rune."

Well they need to make up their minds. It's a dragon, it's not a dragon, bah. <_<

Thanks for that, though. Next time maybe I'll let him keep the Summer Sword or use the Forge Master's Hammer or something.

Don't feel bad. I didn't know about the hold tab thing until someone mentioned it here a while back. Believe me I could have knocked over a car with how hard I smacked myself then.

First time casting Tempest as a mage: I know it says "friendly fire possible", but I thought that meant that it would target any enemies in the area of effect and accidentally zap anyone who happened to be standing next to them or engaged in melee combat with them or something. I made the additional mistake of casting it in an enclosed area where the "area of effect" encompassed the entire room, including right where my Mage was standing. I'm sitting on my couch watching the awesomeness of my spell and then suddenly WHOOM --everyone in the room is KOed except Leliana. Oops. . .tee hee, sorry guys. . .

What could turn out to be even more of a *facepalm* is that so far this KO accounts for my Mage's only injury. I fully expect there to be others, so I'm not seriously worried about losing an achievement over this, but all the same my Mage made it quite a bit farther in the game without injury than either of my Rogues. I was a bit miffed that this was how my winning streak ended.

Well I just had a really bad facepalm - moment. After more playthroughs than I care to count, I realised for the first time today that there is an exit that leads close to the entrance in the Ruined Temple from the pathway where the dragon is. I've always walked ALL the way through the bloody caverns and temple before this......

It took me more playthroughs than I want to admit to find that out, as well, so you're not alone.

I don't know which is worse --not finding that door OR, what I did, finding the door on my first playthrough but only using it to go back *from* the mountain top. My last trip through on my 2nd playthrough I finally facepalmed and realized that you know what? The magical secret doorway goes BOTH WAYS! Imagine. . .

I don't know, it made sense at the time. I just felt like the door wasn't there (or not accessible, anyway)  until I made it through the Gauntlet, so I just associated its accessibility with going through the Gauntlet. So I only looked for that door on the way back *down* the Mountain, not on the way up. There are other video games in which that happens; the magic door appears at the end of a big level so you can leave the area without having to slog all the way back the way you came, but it only works from back to front. *shrugs*

The first time I met Wynne, I guess because I had Morrigan with me or something, it led to a fight where I killed Wynne. I didn't know she was a possible companion until my second playthrough.

Though there are by far many more facepalm moments than I care to admit, these are the ones I remember:

*I didn't know where the camp was until about half way through the game in my first playthrough. I remember spending a good hour just looking for it...

*I accidently ran into the elf at Ostagar and got Ser Garlen's Sword my first playthrough, but now in every playthrough I've done after that, I can't find him...

*I didn't know you could steal from NPC's until my 4th playthrough (the current one atm). *facepalm*

*I didn't know about the "hold command" until my 4th playthrough

*In my First Playthrough, I didn't know you could summon troops during the battle of Denerim until I reached the Archdemon or use the ballistas to kill it. Let's just say I died more than I like to say before I figured it out.

*Had to kill the Archdemon with the ballistas since I kept dying anyway. I was also on Casual difficulty. I suck at this game.

Ugh. . .more facepalm. When will it end?

Did Soldier's Peak fairly early in the game and Morrigan didn't have a high enough Magic score to wield the Winter's Breath staff you find there, so I gave it to Wynne to use until she did, so as not to let it go to waste. Then I kept forgetting to give it to Morrigan once she had achieved the required level of magic. Then I defiled the Urn of Sacred Ashes without divesting Wynne of that staff before I left camp. Sure enough, the second I got back to camp she left me, taking the Winter's Breath with her. Now if I want Morrigan to have that staff, I have to spend 26 sovereigns and change on it in the Wonders of Thedas.

I hope that staff freezes Wynne's dead old bones. :pinched:

@Morwen:

LOL!

But don't you have any savefiles to reload?

This may not be too facepalm worthy, but it was util my fourth playthrough that I realized that hitting the "v" key hid the interface. Actually, I think I knew about it, but I never actually used it... *facepalm*

Oh, here's a very facepalm worthy confession. I originally thought that the "Survival" skill allowed you to detect stealthed enemies...:pinched:

The PS3 allows you 30 save slots per character. If I reach a point where I think I might want to go back and redo a game from a certain fork in the decision tree I'll make a new save so I can go back to the old one if necessary. Otherwise I just overwrite. This practice has saved me on more than one occasion. However, things went pretty well on the Sacred Ashes quest and I pretty much knew I was going to defile the Ashes from the beginning so I think my previous save file was from Haven or possibly earlier. And Morrigan is doing pretty well with just her Enchanter's Staff for now so I'll just save up the 26 sovereigns and buy her the damn thing in Denerim eventually. Fortunately I'm spending way less in the shops as a Mage than I did as a Rogue. My Rogue PCs are big bomb- and trap- makers. Also my party uses way fewer health poultices so I almost never have to make them.

Also, my Werewolves are cheap dates --they don't need any contributions to the allied supply crates! :P

One I just did - again. Go back to camp after a long adventure, level up everyone, update tactics, redistribute gear and runes, sell the excess to Bodahn, then go to the menu and select Load "Camp" instead of Save "Camp". Poof! Back to square one.

Apart from all the noob mistakes (like not finding out of Denerim, not knowing where Camp is, trying to find a shop that sells arrows...  ) there are two MAJOR facepalms that really irked me:

* On my first playthrough, I didn't know you could level up your followers in camp. So halfway through the game, I get the notion that I could maybe switch out my entire party (Alistair, Morrigan & Dog) against companions I hadn't used at all at that point: Sten, Leli and Zevran. I wanted to get to know them better. -.-
So I take them with me on a trip to someplace else to level them up, and we get a random encounter - featuring a Hurlock Emissary and a dozen more darkspawn on a field littered with stupid leghold traps. Now here's the thing: I can't level my companions up because the fight scene starts immediately, and I'm stuck there with a Chantry girl with her longbow at level 1, a giant in his underpants with NO weapon at all at level 1, and a rogue with absolutely no rogue skills at level 1. And myself (not level 1, but still inexperienced enough to not be able to win this fight). The loot I had on me consisted of higher-tier weaponry and armour, so I couldn't even equip anyone with anything.
It was the shortest battle in the history of Ferelden.

* On one of my first playthroughs as a mage, I ended up being the last one standing in one of the battles. My health is nearing zero, and there's only this one stupid Hurlock left. Problem is, this one stupid Hurlock is running towards me sporting a 'Virulent Walking Bomb' I had previously cast on him. Panic. I try to make a run for it, but the stupid thing explodes in my back, sending me to the Fereldan equivalent of the happy hunting grounds -.-

. . .not to rub it in or anything, but at least on the PS3 when you click the in-battle radial menu, there is an "Inventory" option from which you can access the regular inventory screen and change your party's equipment. . .and even level them up, I think, because I've certainly changed party tactics in mid-battle from there. . .

Not sure if that option is available on the PC though.

No worries
Trust me, I tried all variations of levelling up upon that experience, but it doesn't work, even from the inventory screen (I'm on PC). ;) I know you can equip other items during battle - problem is, if you have stuff that requires 20+ str to wield and your characters only have 12, and you can't level them up, well.....

As I said - first playthrough, has never happened again :D
