I've had ME2 on xbox 360 since it was released. But that may soon change: I've borrowed the PC copy of ME2 from a friend of mine with the intention of seeing whether its as good as all you PC players claim it is. I predict several potential problems, the first being that the last PC shooter I played was Star wars Battlefront one, and I sucked at it really bad.
My hope is that I'll be able to aquaint myself with the controls quickly enough to maybe start recording some FRAPS videos for my flash guide. we'll see. as it is I just played lazarus project on insanity and died lots for really embarrasing reasons:
1. The mouse sensitivity is ridiculous and I can't figure out how to change it. literally a 2cm movement swings the camera 180 degrees
2. I keep losing track of where my keys are. I also couldn't figure out how to tactical pause. I resorted to the booklet after pressing random buttons yielded poor results ("shift? really? wow, I suck, thats heaps obvious...")
3. sitting 50cm from the screen as opposed to 4m is slightly disorientating. No, really, it is.
4. confusing my hotkeys ("throw! wait, why am i putting tech armour on? ahhh, damn")
5. I'm used to being able to easily destroy enemies on xbox so I initially played aggressively. And died. then I played with passively, and with fear. but I still died.

I intend to persevere with this for at least a week or two and see how it goes. then I'll give you an unbiased and well reasoned decision on which one is the best. because why not.

Its a much steeper learning curve than i'd imagined. any tips from the native PC players?

Yeah, I agree on the mouse sensitivity, it was way too sensitivity for me. To really fix it you have to eff around with this Coalesced.ini file. If you google it you'll find out how to do it. Be careful though, make sure you back up the file first because if you don't edit it correctly, the game won't launch :)

As for the rest, for me it took practice. I did the reverse and tried playing it on a friend's xbox and to me it was definitely a seachange. I can't offer much more other than encouraging perseverance.

Don't really know what to say except that you get used to it. The controls are the same controls PC players have been using for over a decade, since the first Quake I think. The basic controls for Mass Effect 2 PC are the same for Call of Duty, Morrowind, Assassin's Creed, Freelancer, World of Warcraft...

It may be of some help to swap the functions of Shift and Space. This makes it more consistent with the ME1PC controls, the controls of most shooting games, and with the controls of every single BioWare RPG since the original Neverwinter Nights. Whoever thought to change that for ME2 really needs a slap to the face.

I can guess that the mouse's sensitivity takes some getting used to. Fair warning though, if you do get used to it, turning with a control stick will forever seem slow and clumsy in comparison.

Yep. Pretty much the only relatively 'new' control ME2 has is the real-time GUI, from ME1. The rest has been in use over the last decade.

As for mouse sensitivity... to be honest, I'm surprised that people find it that sensitive. I've never tried modding the sensitivity since it's pretty much what I'd set it to if I had the choice. Again, it's nothing new.

On the other hand, of course, one of the prime reasons I hate playing FPS/TPS on console is the horrendously ponderous turn rates. I feel like my character is doing the robot dance in Halo 3. Someone used to that level of sluggishness would presumably find the controls a bit of a shock.

You'll figure it out. Once you get used to chaining headshots and pause free gameplay you won't want to go back.

I play pause-free on Xbox quite a bit. A lot of console players don't realize that holding X switches to your previously selected weapon, and for most missions 3 powers hotkeyed ( +1 on each squadmate) are enough.

If you're unhappy with the key setup, just change it to whatever you like. Probably the most time consuming thing is deciding where to put the 8 hotkeys and what order to assign powers to them. That and the two squad order keys plus regroup. Once you've done all that and got used to the setup, have fun with the (for the most part) pause free gaming! :)

Ah, yes. "The allegedly rediculous mouse sensetivity". We have already dissmissed that claim. Tht's how we roll.

It's refreshing to have a game where I didn't have to crank the mouse sensitivity UP.

Same here. ME2 is actually very slow compared to UT for example.

I've played both. Game's certainly easy on the PC.

That said, it is not a problem playing ME2 on the xbox as this game is much more about tactics than actual skill in aiming. But man do I miss my mouse and keyboard in some other games.

As for the mouse sensitivity. I play a lot of console games but honestly I didn't think it was too high on the PC. Usually I turn it up quite a bit. But then I have played quite a lot of FPS games on the PC over the years.

For those who have both PC and xbox, is it easier to melee on PC? I play xbox and even the mechs seem to turn faster than I can get to them, which is why I did not like playing vanguard so much ( as its an important part of attacking groups of bad guys ). If I turn up camera move speed it makes it more difficult to aim.

I don't see how it would be much easier... but I guess my left thumb is always resting on Space, so effetively I can always melee no matter what else I'm doing. I've actually set two keys up for melee, one Space and one Mouse 3.

I really like how my G5 worked with the controls on ME2. Using the mouse alone, I can melee, command, bring up the GUI (and hence use all powers), shoot, aim and look. It definitely contributed to how smooth the experience was.

The default key for melee is F, so if you want to melee while strafing to the right you'll have to be able to press two keys with one finger.

Or you could just remap the key.

When do you ever need to strafe and melee? If I'm using melee it's cause I'm in the enemy's face, at which point mouse turning is more than good enough to keep them there.

Use a better mouse. One with adjustable dpi. That takes care of the sensitivity issue. Ball based mice are sooooo 1988.

I wouldn't know about "mouse sensitivity" on my PC; I use a Logitech Trackman Wheel trackball.

You are a better man than I. I can hardly run a word processor with a trackball, can't imagine trying to game with one.

Hah, I used to use a trackball for shooters. Did this for a long time, but too much gaming made my thumb hurt so I had to stop.

surely not another Pastafarian among us? Anyway i did enjoy not understanding what the OP in that link said at all and I'm only going to have this game for a fortnight max. so no new mouse for me, and hopefully not too much random file editing.

The other wierd thing is that you can look around on xbox when in tactical pause. you cannot do that on PC. it makes me sad.

I had a wireless mouse in originally but have since switched it to a more normal mouse. which worked better. I still died a lot, maybe I should drop down from insan- no no no no can't do it.

Ah I forgot you couldn't do that on the PC.

It's basically cheating if you do it after a Charge with a vanguard, so I'm trying to avoid it at the moment :)

I plan to go PC as soon as I have one again (only having a laptop right now). I can play my classes without problems on Xbox but as I'm a native PC player I miss the mouse aiming obviously. I was wondering though if you can't change the controls in the PC version. WASD for example might be fine for most players, I absolutely hate it and play QWES since forever in any shooter and also like to put a lot of commands on my mouse keys. I hope you can do that in ME2 because default keys usually never work for me.
